Wisconsin didn’t have a Packer’s Super Bowl team, but we have our own super team of won-

derful Lakeshore volunteers. It is hard to believe there are only a few months left in this ad-

ministration. It was our pleasure to host the GFWC International Convention this past June

and in May of 2012 we will have the opportunity to be the host district of the GFWC-WI

Convention at the Hilton Garden Inn. The willingness of the GFWC-WI Lakeshore members

to step up and help wherever needed makes this president extremely proud. Just refer to

the recent GFWC Clubwoman and notice how often Wisconsin women are mentioned.

What is on the horizon? We will be sharing the materials that we receive at the GFWC-WI

Winter Workshop in Warren, WI. There is bound to be something of interest for everyone.

Are you preparing your artwork, stories, poems and photographs for April? See Sandy

Anderson and Pat Hladilek’s articles in this FOCUS.

Our April 16th Convention will be very special because we will have three state officers as

guests – GFWC-WI President, Ellen Weber, who will be the installing officer, President-Elect

Beth Griesser and Jan Allen, the State Reporting Chairman. There will be awards and special

recognitions. The program of the day will be fun and different! Please encourage your mem-

bers to attend this district convention – they will find it a great way to connect with their

Federation sisters.

On May 17-20 we will be volunteering our time during the state convention. We will be in

touch with you about the various duties. Arrangements are in the capable hands of Pat

Hladilek and Nancy Schrap. And don’t forget the GFWC International Convention will be

held in Charlotte, NC June 13-17th. Once you have had the privilege of attending an interna-

tional convention, you will surely want to attend again.

If you have questions about the structure, programs or policies of GFWC, please feel com-

fortable contacting any one of the board members or me. We are here to help you.

Remember, as you are out in the community, “SOS”, Share Our Success! We have a won-

derful story to tell.

See you on the Federation Trail,

Spring is the time when the weather warms, and we feel a sense of resurgence and renewal. This

is when seeds are planted and many flowers bloom. All GFWC members should concentrate on

cultivating our club gardens and growing new members.

March

National Craft Month

Host a Mother’s Day card-making event. Invite potential and current members to invite their

daughters and or granddaughters to craft handmade cards for a domestic violence shelter. The

unique cards would be given to the children in the shelter to give to their mothers. Not only will

this event strengthen bonds between the crafters, but it will also instill a sense of volunteerism.

This hands-on project will promote the good works of your club to attract new members–and

could even be the start of a Juniorette club.

April

Earth Day

Celebrate Earth Day by planning eco-friendly activities for your members and guests. You can

plant trees in a park, participate in forest restoration projects, and seed urban gardens. Plan a day

to learn about our Trees for Tomorrow, inviting a guest speaker.

May

National Bike Month

Hold a bike safety check at your local elementary school and partner with your local police de-

partment. Wear apparel that identifies you as a GFWC club and provide information about your

club and GFWC with the certificate of inspection.

Recognition

Clubs achieving and reporting three new members, as a result of their seasonal recruiting efforts

will be recognized in the GFWC Clubwoman Magazine.

Reporting New Members to Your State Federation

Please follow the guidelines for your state when sending in dues, names, and contact information

for your newly recruited members.

At our GFWC-WI Lakeshore Convention and Installation on April 16 we will be pre-

senting the Membership Awards based on dues received by the District Treasurer by April 1.

1. To a club with the greatest percentage of net increase during the club year.

2. To the club taking in the greatest number of new members during the club year.

Happy Recruiting! Nancy Schrap, President-elect

GFWC-WI Winter Workshop Recap

Page 4

Warrens, WI February 17-18, 2012

“Leadership for Tomorrow”

After a bit of apprehension about driving “up north” in the middle of February, “Old Man Winter” was good to us

with dry roads and pleasant weather. We enjoyed a fish fry at the Three Bears Lodge followed by a “Sock Project”

workshop for the domestic abuse shelters. Over 200 pairs of socks were labeled and bagged. It was still early, so

we pitched in to help the West Allis club fold, label, stamp and stuff their newsletters. They have 95 members, so

that was helpful to them. GFWC members can “git er done”!

The Saturday session began with a continental breakfast and a few words from Jean Maiwald about leadership = she

said “Leaders motivate others and ignore their own accomplishments while encouraging others”. Lois Reinfeldt then

shared the history of “Old Glory” prior to saying the Pledge of Allegiance.

There were 50 members in attendance and Lakeshore had 8 of those. Way to go, girls!

We were told there are now 1946 members in the GFWC-WI Federation representing 61 clubs.

A by-law revision regarding auditing the books was passed. It eliminated the hiring of a professional team of auditors

as being too expensive.

GFWC-WI President Ellen Weber gave us a few hints about the upcoming state convention. The GFWC First Vice

President Babs Condon will be attending and Teri Nicolai, the domestic violence survivor of attempted murder by

her husband will be one of our speakers. Ellen requested that we bring our “Quilts of Valor” to the convention

to be presented to the Veterans and Color Guard.

The first responder Ped Bag project is still active and the original cost of $235 is being discounted by $80 for a final

cost of $155. Over 30,000 Wisconsin children per year are affected.

GFWC-WI President Elect Beth Griesser and her team did a really cute “Cooking in the Kitchen” skit about mem-

bership.

Our “Trees for Tomorrow” lady, Ina Trummer reported that the GFWC sign on the forest property was moved

closer to the road for better visibility and high school students were working to remove Jack Pines making room for

new trees.

Kay Salewske, nominations chairman, gave an urgent plea for members to step up and accept an office for the 2012-

2014 administration.

Nancy Schrap and I attended the District President’s meeting with Beth Griesser.

"Step Away From Abuse" is a new slogan for Domestic Violence

Awareness.

Members are asked to bring a pair (or pairs) of socks either childrens or women's to the April Lakeshore Con-

vention at Hilton's - Anchorage Hotel on April 16. The socks will be placed in a baggie with a label with an en-

couraging message. We will provide the baggie, just bring the socks. Thanks for your cooperation.

Plant Pinwheels for Prevention

GFWC, together with our GFWC Signature Project: Domestic Violence Aware-

ness and Prevention Program Partner Prevent Child Abuse America, seeks to

change the way our nation thinks about prevention. Show your support for

healthy child development and child abuse prevention by participating in the Pin-

wheels for Prevention® campaign. Using the pinwheel as a symbol for child abuse

and neglect prevention nationwide, the campaign focuses on community activities

and public policies that prioritize healthy child development and child abuse pre-

vention to make sure abuse and neglect never occur. For more information, go to

the GFWC website at www.GFWC.org.

At the October 24th Lakeshore District Meeting each Club President received information about the Helen

Farnsworth Mears Art Project, in their “Club” Envelopes. Please read it over and pass it on to the appropriate

member in your club. Remember, the contest is open to Public, Private and Home Schooled 7th and 8th Graders.

Maybe your club hasn’t participated in the past or for some time anyway – now is the time to see if you can

“drum up” some business! Things change, teachers change – this may be the time to introduce our Art Contest

– teachers may want to use it for extra credit for some students.

The Lakeshore District judging will take place April 12, 2012 at the West Allis Library.

“Make it happen”! Any questions or concerns call Pat Hladilek at 414/514-8861 or email [email protected]

Lakeshore District Reporting Update

Jan Allen, GFWC-WI Second Vice President and Reports Chairman distributed our club reports and this president is

happy to say we had 9 of our 12 clubs submit reports to the Federation.

GFWC Lakeshore District has 12 clubs with 474 members as of February 1st, 2012.

Lakeshore District statistics are mind-boggling:

Our ladies gave 30,467 volunteer hours;

Donated $82,933 dollars as well as $24,596 in-kind donations.

Participated in over 460 projects.

What a fantastic group of women! In addition to our GFWC Community Service Programs many, many of our volun-

teers are also active in other clubs, veterans groups, libraries, schools, historical societies, homeless shelters, garden

clubs, poll workers, food pantries, teen centers, scouts and more. The communities where there are GFWC

Women’s Clubs benefit greatly from the contributions our members willingly share. Thank you!

The Woman’s Club of South Milwaukee will be holding its annual Fashion Show Saturday April 20th at 12 noon. We

have a new location this year which should prove to be a lot of fun. Our new location is Salvatore’s located at 1919

12th Avenue in South Milwaukee .

Our fundraising this year goes to Autistic and special needs children in the community. Our goal is to give teachers

the tools needed to help these children become the best they can be. I hope you will join us and help us to our

goal. The cost is $20.00 and raffle tickets will be 6 for $5.00. This year we’ll have gently used jewelry for sale

among many other special things.

Dance the Night Away

March 31, 2012

North Shore Junior Women’s Club

The North Shore Junior Women’s Club (NSJWC) is hosting a fundraiser benefiting Girls on the Run, an enrichment

program for young girls. The NSJWC event, titled Dance the Night Away, will be held Saturday, March 31, 2012 at 600

E. Henry Clay Street. This fun evening includes great food, refreshments, a live band, silent auction, a cork pull, danc-

ing and an opportunity to support a great cause. We invite the community to join us; tickets are $40 per person.

Girls on the Run is a youth development program which combines an interactive curriculum and running to inspire self-

respect and healthy lifestyles in pre-teen girls. Their core curriculum addresses many aspects of girls’ development –

their physical, emotional, mental and social well-being. Lessons provide girls with the tools to make positive decisions

and to avoid risky adolescent behaviors.

Event co-chairs are Kate Fritsch and Marilee Hernandez. Contact either with questions or email the club at
