The Royal Ballet meets Glenthorne

Glenthorne High School Dance pupils have been selected to work on a collaborative project with the Royal Ballet School through the Dance Partnership and Access scheme. Twenty-one GCSE Dance pupils from year 10 are combining their choreographic vision with twenty-six year 10 Royal Ballet pupils in a united dance performance. Through this project, Royal Ballet pupils are being shown the ‘Glenthorne way’ by touring the school, learning pro-fessional repertoire and taking part in challenging dance/drama workshops. In return, Glenthorne Dance pupils are working tirelessly exploring choreographic tasks, develop-ing material and learning new dance styles both at Glenthorne and at the home of The Royal Ballet School: White Lodge, Richmond Park.

The choreographic project is being led by professional cho-reographers Toby Norman-Wright and Bim Malcolmson. The stimulus for the dance work is the idea of traditional and modern ‘gaming’. The pupils continue to input a range of exciting ideas into the work, pushing themselves physi-cally and mentally. The collaborative dance work will be performed at the prestigious Royal Ballet School to an ex-citing audience of proud parents, enthusiastic teachers and dance professionals. The performance evening also pro-vides an amazing opportunity for Glenthorne pupils to demonstrate their personal choreographic style as three choreographies are to be auditioned and selected to be performed.

The year 10 pupils have made professional and personal progress through this out-standing project, and have even found time to fit in an impromptu ‘Harlem shake’. Be sure to attend the final performances on 10th and 11th May for a show that will astonish, amaze and astound.

were crammed into the Glenthorne School Hall ready to begin BBC School report day.

Glenthorne joined over a thousand schools across the UK and around the world turning ordinary students into intrepid reporters. The day began with a huge editorial meeting in the Hall where each of the 32 different news teams scoured the morning’s newspa-pers for angles and stories. From there, the groups split up into three different areas: TV, Radio or Web Design. Young Creative’s Project 2013 This year Glenthorne High School has been successful again in one of our dancers gain-ing a place on the Youth Dance England Young Creative’s Choreographer project, Chloe Green Yr13. This is our fourth year taking part in the project, which has not only given each choreog-rapher great training and mentoring to continue their dance career but also giving the dancers in the group an opportunity to develop their technical ability and training in a 4 day residential at The Royal Ballet School in Richmond Park. They also have the oppor-tunity to perform at The Linbury theatre at the Royal Opera House, as a climax to the project. Chloe Green along with her dancers was selected from over 100 applicants from across the country, to create a new dance choreography under the mentoring of industry pro-fessionals such as Bettina Strickler (a free-lance

dance artist) and also top ballet teachers from White Lodge. The residential is taking place over Easter where all 4 dancers will stay and train intensely for 4 days in ballet and Contemporary as well as con-tinuing to work and re-shape their piece. The final performance is on Friday 17th May at 7pm at The Royal Opera House, where both friends and family can see all their hard work as well as many dance industry professionals.

Every year we enter a local school com-

petition that shows student’s creative

ability and skills. There was some excel-

The Bronze Arts Award offers Year 7 pupils the opportunity to gain recognition for all they have been involved in and expe-rienced in the arts in their first year at Glenthorne. The Arts Award is a nationally recognised certificate that celebrates

participation, skill-building and appreciation of the arts in all their forms. Pupils have been working in lessons and during their immersion days to build their portfolio and key events, such as performing 'Singing In The Rain' for the Creative Arts

show and the Polka Theatre visit to see 'Sticks & Stones' contribute to their folder. Year 7 pupils only have one more step

to complete to achieve the award which is to share an arts skill with their peers. Their tutors and arts teachers will support them with this. To gain the certificate there is a fee of £17 which covers the cost of the external moderation. We support

all pupils in completing their folder and they will receive a Glenthorne certificate to celebrate their year of involvement and developing of skills in the arts alongside valuable vivos!

Senior Company at the Lyric Hammersmith This year our Senior Drama Company have been success-ful in securing a place at the Regional National Theatre Connections festival which is to take place at the Lyric Theatre Hammersmith. This is a huge achievement for the company and follows on from their success last year at the Rose Theatre in Kingston. The company will be per-forming a new play entitled “What are they Like?”. “What are they like?” is a comedy where teenagers take on the role of their parents. The story is told from the point of view of a stressed parent struggling to bring up their stroppy teenage son or daughter. Adolescence is a rough ride. You've got existential angst, mood swings, fashion fiascos, terrifying physical changes, never enough money... And that's just the parents. How well do you know yours? The Lyric Hammersmith aims to produce work that is pro-

voking, entertaining, popular, eclectic, messy, contradicto-ry and diverse. Our senior Drama company are extremely

lucky to be treading the boards at such a highly regarded

theatre. Performances will take place on the 16th April at 8:30. Tickets can be purchased directly through the Lyric

Hammersmith.

Drama Academy Performance

We call ourselves the School of Meddlers. Med-

dler 1 is Ellie Pullen, Med-dler 2 is Matt Robinson, Meddler 3 is Chris Bean, Med-

dler 4 is Abigail Liasi and Meddler 5 is Jonathan Brew-

er. We are currently working on a play called Chatroom by Enda Walsh to be performed at the IYAF

(International Youth Arts Festival) at Kingston in July.

The Drama Academy allows 6th formers to understand and explore what it is like to work in the professional

performing industry. The units range from performance to an audience, voice and movement to marketing. To

add to this the work is mostly practical so you are al-ways having fun and the hard work pays off. It is also

driven by people who work in the performance industry

and therefore have 1st hand experience of what it takes to become a professional and to go through Dra-

ma School. They are all very supportive and the focus is on the progress we make to get to the final perfor-

mance so that you can see clearly how far you have

come. It’s a very positive atmosphere and you are al-ways pushed to do the best you possibly can.

Thank you Gemma Boaden and John Kirk! The details for the performance of Chatroom will be out shortly so

make sure you look around for it!

Summer Arts Festival As part of the Summer Arts Festival, a variety of our

Drama Extracurricular companies will be performing

the following plays.

“Antigone” -– performed by our Senior Selected Stu-

dents – Directed by Miss L Cullum.

“What are they Like?” performed by our Senior Dra-ma Company – Directed by Mr J Walsh

“Show and Tell” performed by our Senior Drama

Company – Directed by Mr J Walsh & Miss A Tiltman

Our Junior Drama company will also perform a play

under the direction of Miss K Hofmeyr and Mr A Ab-

ery.

U.Dance 2013 Congratulations to ‘B-D-1’ Dance Company (Boys from A-D-1 Dance Company) who have gained a place in the semi-finals of the U.Dance competition 2013. Last year we saw ‘A-D-1’ Principal Dancers reach the final of U.Dance representing London, performing at The Royal Festi-val Hall and this year the boys are competing against 7 other London based youth dance companies for a place in the Leeds final to represent London. The 6 boys have been working extremely hard over the past few weeks with their choreographer Shaun Dillon from Roe-hampton University in devising and rehearsing their piece to a high standard ready for the semi-final on Sunday 14th April at The Laban Centre. We wish the boys the best of luck with their performance and hope to see them representing London in the final.
