1 GIFTED AND TALENTED PLACES After an intensive selection process, Mendooran Central School is pleased to announce that Shanoa Hartley and Jackson Adams have been offered a place in the i.xtend Gifted and Talented program for 2011. Over 300 nominations were received from almost 60 schools across the Western region. At this stage, only 60 places have been awarded to students in Years 5 - 8. Two of those places have gone to Mendooran Central School students! i.xtend is an online enrichment and extension program designed to cater for the needs of gifted and talented students in Middle Years (Years 5 – 8). The program runs for approximately 14 weeks a year. It aims to develop critical and creative thinking, independent research and technology skills, and effective communication strategies in students. Students will be expected to complete a total of eight tasks for the program. Six of these tasks will be ‘minor’ tasks and two will be ‘major’ tasks. The six minor tasks are submitted on a weekly basis for the first six weeks of the program. The final six weeks of the program are to work on a major task and a process diary. The area of research will be ultimately up to the student (within the boundaries of the topic, of course). A minimum of two hours per week is assigned to each student to work on their tasks and to access the website and forums. MCS will provide a support teacher and there will be an online facilitator. At the conclusion of the i.xtend journey, our students will be invited to an Expo Day, where they will be asked to present their work to their i.xtend classmates, teachers and parents. Our students will also be presented with a certificate to acknowledge their involvement in the program. We are very proud of these two students and our other two students who applied for the program. It takes courage and determination to step outside the normal boundaries and attempt something new and different. Well done! It was quite fitting that the year ended in a wonderful celebration of student achievement last night. It is important that we acknowledge the effort and achievements of our students and I thank the parents and families who took the time to help congratulate all students at our Awards Presentation Ceremony. To all of those students who were recognised and received awards, whether it was for Academic, Sporting, or Special Awards, special congratulations to you all. However I wish to congratulate our whole student body on how cooperative and positive you have been in the classroom this year. Providing effective teaching and learning is the most important thing that we do here at school and your willingness to cooperate that makes this possible. So thank you and congratulations to all of our students on the efforts you have made all year. Please be proud of yourselves, because I certainly am. To our teachers and non teaching staff, I thank and applaud you for your efforts all year - it is due to your caring nature, the love that you have for your job, and your absolute commitment to making a difference that have made all of the wonderful things that happen at our school possible. As I said last night, 2010 has seen many achievements and it is important that we recognise that many of the successes and achievements have been the result of the wonderful relationships that have been established between the staff, students and the wider community, and the willingness of all these people to work together for the benefit of the students of Mendooran Central School. Special mention needs to be made to the members of our School Council, the P&C and the Canteen helpers, for their constructive and positive contribution to the school. This year we say good bye to two very capable teachers who have made an outstanding contribution to the school. Mr Jeremy Whiterod has been awarded a promotion of Head Teacher English, at Peak Hill Central School. Miss Prue Miles has received a transfer to Branxton Public School where she will be closer to family. We thank them both for the outstanding work they have done inside and outside of the classroom at Mendooran Central School. They will be both greatly missed by all members. Mrs Cheryl Treacey, our school counsellor is also retiring at the end of this Year. Mrs Treacey has also been a tower of strength in supporting students. We thank her for the wonderful manner in which she has carried out her work and wish her many happy and healthy years of retirement.

Finally I wish all students, parents and extended family members a very happy and safe Christmas and look forward to another successful year next year.

SECONDARY NEWS

SECONDARY GENERAL The year is coming to a close and the Secondary Department have had an extremely positive and successful year. Both academically and socially we have made great inroads. The students are thriving in this positive learning environment. Additionally, staff expertise has been enhanced by their involvement with experienced mentors in other schools including Mudgee and Gilgandra. These virtual faculties in various subject areas expose our teachers to some of the most knowledgeable and experienced educators in the region. We will continue this professional learning which can only enhance the education of the children in our care. Last week all of our Intensive Swimming students tested were successful. Thank you very much to Mr Whiterod for his training and supervision of the students during a busy and difficult time with the weather. Grace Leask returned today from a week at Newcastle University, sampling university life including lectures and the accommodation with the focus being Science. It is with great sadness and a sense of pride that we farewell Mr Whiterod who has obtained a Head Teacher job at Peak Hill. His contribution to our school has been invaluable and the influence he has had on the students within his classroom will stay with them well into their futures. We also bid a sad farewell to Miss Miles who has done an admirable job in teaching Year 9 Maths and Year 7 Art for the majority of the year. The students really enjoyed having her as a teacher and have learnt a great deal. We trust everyone has a safe and restful break ready for 2011! J Waters

YEAR 10 FORMAL Last Wednesday night we once again held the annual Mendooran Year 10 Formal. It was a great night with our Year 10 students celebrating their achievements at school, with family and friends. The girls all dressed extremely well and the boys dazzled us with their colorful choice of suits. It was a night of mixed emotions for Year 10 as some of their long term class mates depart from Mendooran however they are all aware that this marks the start of their final years at school and are enthusiastic about working towards their career ambitions. We all wish Year 10 well in their futures wherever they may be. Michael Heazlett Year 10 Roll Patron

Please contact the school office in advance if possible if you would like to purchase uniforms. The correct money is a huge help to the office staff.

SUICIDE PREVENTION WORKSHOP Last Tuesday night, the Mendooran Development Group presented a workshop dealing with recognising and preventing suicide. The evening was informative and assisted people in talking about suicide openly and enabling them to learn about the strategies for suicide prevention. The main take home message was that talking openly about our problems and knowing how to see the early warning signs of suicide help to bring things out in the open for discussion, rather than resorting to drastic measures. Remember: S-A-L-T.

S – See the early warning signs. Changes of behaviour, depression, someone not being themselves.

A – Ask the person how they are feeling, coping etc. Often when they know someone else can see that they’re having problems it can lead to discussion and resolution.

L – Listen to any problems or issues that they are having. Do not judge or trivialise what they are feeling.

T – Tell them to seek help. Or, if they are in imminent danger, tell the police or mental health services about your concerns. Suicides are unfortunately on the rise, particularly amongst men. Talk openly about the problems you are having and look after your friends and family. Lifeline is a free 24 hour service available for phone counselling on 13 11 14. Please contact the school if you would like some more information. B Bearman
