So this may work while you're hangingout in your room, but what do you dowhen you are in the back seat of yourparents' car arguing with your brother—for the second time this week?

Try taking a mental vacation for a minute.Check your watch and give yourself 60 sec-onds to chill. Count backwards from 10 (or20 depending on what is going on!) andthen do an abbreviated breathing break. Youwill be surprised how long 60 seconds isand how quickly you achieve peace. A Good Hair Day14-year-old Sontaki spends a lot of hertime after school and on the weekendsstyling hair for friends and neighbors. An eighth grader in Mobile, Alabama,Sontaki had always been good at stylingher hair. "I was just doing my friends' hair,"Sontaki says about how she first gainednotoriety in her neighborhood for herstylin' skills. She's considered chargingpeople for her services because "someoneasked me to do her hair and offered topay for it [once]," Sontaki explains. "Iwould've done it for free."

Focus: Mind YourOwn Business Mind Your OwnBusiness will help you tap into the inner-entrepreneur that’s beenhanging out inside of you just waiting to say “what’s up!” 20547 $4.95 28 pages.

The Best Advertising (That Money Can't Buy)Sontaki estimates that she styles hairfor about four people per week ("well, five—mine, too"). "Sometimes, me andmy friends go to an event like Battle ofthe Bands," she says, "and they comeover to my house so I can do their hairin braids or a casual style first."Word of mouth is the best and leastexpensive kind of advertising, andSontaki knows that firsthand. "I'll just behanging out in my neighborhood andsomeone will ask me my name and say,'Oh, I heard you do hair.' A lot of peopleget my number from friends and call meto do their hair."

Talk about the BenjaminsSo, does Sontaki consider styling hairon the side a business? "In a way, I'mtreating it like a business because a lotof people depend on me to do their hairand I could get paid to do it someday!"It'd be a pretty profitable businessbecause she uses her customers' ownbrushes, bobby pins, and hair clips todo her friends' and neighbors' hair.Since the advertising is free and shewouldn't have to buy anything to runher business, the money she'd makewould be pure profit.

Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow?Hair styling keeps her pretty busy now."Mostly, I'll style hair whenever and notjust on the weekends anymore (like Iused to when I first started). When Istarted doing hair, sometimes peopledidn't like their hair afterwards, but nowthat I do it all the time, I'm better andpeople always like what I do."She's not really sure she wants to makea career of hair styling but she's thoughtabout doing it when she gets older."Everyone tells me that I have a talent forit," says Sontaki. "I could be a beauticianbecause I do have the capability for it.But I want to be a singer…maybe Icould do both."

What's in a charm? YOU.Each charm represents your personal experiences,accomplishments, challenges,and memories.

Charms aren't justpretty danglingthings that hangfrom a silverbracelet. In STUDIO 2B,charms representgoals set andachieved.Theeffort you put in iswhat you will getout of it.

Charming

18

Page 19: Girl Scout Magazine

Your goal should have enough detail soyou know exactly what you should bedoing. Creating a goal of "saving animals"is too vague but “rescuing and findinghomes for five cats” is more detailed.

How will you know if you've achievedyour goal if it isn't measurable? Saying, “Iwant to get in better shape,” is not meas-urable. Saying, “I want to run one milenonstop,” is.

Set goals you can actually meet. Don'tset yourself up to fail with a "crazy" goallike become a millionaire by the age of 18.attainable for some teens, but unrealisticfor most.

Set goals you are likely to follow throughon by making them relevant to your life.Don’t set a goal that just “seems like agood idea.” Be positive that your goals aregood ideas.

Set goals that have a specific “expira-tion date.” If your goal is to “write anewsletter,” is the goal completedwhen the newsletter returns from theprinter? Or is it completed once youhave written all the articles? You'remore likely to achieve your goal if youhave a deadline.

Goal setting takes time, but it’s worth it.STUDIO 2B isn't just about readingthrough a book, its about becoming, belonging, believing, and building on afoundation that you create for yourself. Each time you wear a charm that youhave earned, know that it represents youbeing the best you that you can be.

19

Be specific

Be measurable

Be attainable

Be realistic

Be timely

Start by choosing a Focus book thatinterests you. Are you looking to getactive? On Track might be a great start.Need to increase your cash flow? Cashin'In or Got Money would make sense.Taking a trip? Look at On the Go.

Once you have chosen your focus, thinkabout what you want to learn or "get outof" it. Start by thinking big. You mightcome up with things like, "Own my ownbusiness" or "Save the local beach fromerosion." Now that you have some kind ofidea of what you want to achieve, break itdown into smaller chunks. This is a goodpoint for your advisor to jump in.

You might be wondering why there is norequired number of activities you mustdo to reach the goal for each book. That’sbecause goal setting is an individualthing. After all, a girl who is a runner anda girl who has never stepped foot on atrack can both read On Track, but theirpersonal goals would be different. Somegirls set small goals after each activityand use them as stepping stones to alarger goal. Other girls do only the activi-ties that lead them to their larger objec-tive. There is no set way to do it. That’swhy it is important to work with an advi-sor through the process.

Use SMART goals as a guide to movefrom big picture ideas to realistic goals.SMART is an acronym to help you remem-ber to set goals that are specific, measur-able, attainable, realistic and timely.

Sometimes the hardest part of reaching your goal is gettingstarted. Here's a way to start off on the right foot.

Savannah created an event calledRed Carpet Day. The event wasa three-day celebration whichbrought 40 teen cancer patientsfrom all across the Southeast toexperience a mini vacation inAtlanta, Georgia.

The star treatment included:

• being chauffeured around in limousines• a stay at a lavish hotel• a day at Six Flags Over GeorgiaAmusement Park

• a night at a rockin' concert• lots of time for the "stars" to get toknow each other

Turn Passion into ActionSavannah, a teen who's dealt with herown personal bout with cancer, knewfirst-hand the importance of teens withcancer meeting others like themselves.Savannah was all too aware of how difficult the teen years can be, especiallyfor those dealing with the added stressof a life-threatening illness. Her visionfor the project was to create a memo-rable experience for teens that wouldallow them to forget about their illness—if only for a few days. And the event didjust that. One teen said, "This trip mademe feel very special. I have never feltcomfortable about my cancer until Icame here." Another stated, "Wordscan not describe how awesome thistrip was. I had so much fun and I wouldlove to come again."

Savannah and her 12 teen volunteersjoined forces with Six Flags OverGeorgia, several hospitals in theSoutheast, local businesses and othersin the Atlanta community to make theevent happen. Through this network,Savannah organized transportation, housing, food, and free admission tothe amusement park.

Although this event was designed aspart of Savannah's Girl Scout GoldAward service project, it was such asuccess that the CURE ChildhoodCancer organization will now sponsorRed Carpet Day annually. Savannahhopes to broaden the scope by makingit a week-long celebration holding it indifferent cities throughout the UnitedStates.
