Yet, in the Philippines, many children are deprived of this right because of poverty. A number of children stay illiterate and uneducated because of lack of education. Only very few complete high school and a handful lucky ones finish college. This is the sad reality that confronts children from the indigenous communities. Aside from poverty, there are varied factors that prevent them to pursue their studies like difficulty of going to school because of distance and impassable roads. They even climb mountains and cross rivers to go to school. Others are forced to work in rice fields to help their parents and many others suffer from poor health and nutrition. To address the educational concerns of Girl Scouts in indigenous communities, the GSP Central Board approved at its meeting of January 25, 2013 a . This is one of the programs of the Girl Scouts of the Philippines and Friends Foundation, Inc. (GSPFFI) in cooperation with the GSP National Headquarters and its Regional Offices. It will take effect beginning School Year 2013-2014. The scholarship carries an P8,000.00 outright grant per scholar every year or a total of P48,000.00 grant to six (6) scholars annually. Six full scholarships for indigenous Girl Scouts in the six Girl Scouting Regions will enable them to finish their high school education in a government high school institution. Details of this will be: QUALIFICATIONS Girl Scouts from any registered indigenous troops who would meet the following qualifications: 1. A registered Girl Scout, 14 to 17 years of age, and a member of an indigenous troop or is mainstreamed in a regular Girl Scout Troop. 2. Belongs to an active Girl Scout troop handled by a trained and qualified Troop Leader. 3. Must have earned at least three badges under the GSP 8-Point Challenge Program. 4. She must be recommended by her Troop Leader or any adult volunteer from her community. 5. She comes from a poor but respected family in her barangay. EXPECTATIONS 1. She must attend school regularly. 2. She must maintain an average grade of 85 and above. 3. She must remain to be an active member in her Troop.

SCREENING COMMITTEE

Each Region will form a Screening Committee composed of a Troop Leader and representatives from the

Council and Regional Headquarters. The List of Committee members shall be furnished the GSPFFI. The

Committee will screen applicants and submit their recommendations in writing to the Foundation

through the GSP National Executive Director, on or before February 28 of each year. However, for this

year, submission of recommendation to NHQ is being extended until March 15, 2013.

GUIDELINES AND PROCEDURES

1. The GSP National Executive Director forwards the list of respective scholars duly recommended

by the Regional Executive Directors to the GSPFFI Board of Trustees through its President on or

before March 15 of each year.

2. Upon approval by the GSPFFI Board of Trustees, its President makes an official announcement of

GSPFFI scholars for the school year not later than April 15 of each year.

3. Each scholar shall be notified through the Regional Offices on or before April 30 of each year,

which shall disburse the scholarship grant to each scholar accordingly on or before May 15 of

each year.

4. The council will help monitor the progress of the scholar. Copy of the report card every after

grading period shall be submitted by the council to NHQ c/o the Program Division.

5. The P8,000.00 scholarship grant shall be sent through the council in two installments:
