From Founder and Editor -in Chief

Janice L. Carter

Well  this  is  it,  time  to  say  goodbye  to  2011.    Can’t  really  say  I’m  sad  but  I  will  admit  I’m  a  little  disappointed  in  myself.    I  didn’t  accomplish  certain  things,  I  didn’t  stick  to  certain  plans  and  I  fell  back  to  old  habits.  See  life  is  unpredictable  and  if  you  are  not  careful  you  will  lose  focus.  2011  consisted  of  a  lot  of  ups  and  downs  for  me.  Next  year  just  like  all  the  past  New  Years  I  look  forward  to  trying  to  get  this  thing  called  life  right.          I  wont  say  it  was  all  bad,  I  experienced  a  lot  of  new  things  and  places  and  like  Monica  said”  I’m  still  standing”!  As  always  thank  you  to  those  who  have  always  supported  me,  I  can’t  express  enough  the  feeling  of  gratitude  I  have.  It’s    an  amazing  feeling  when  someone  believes  in  you.  I  don’t  know  what  the  future  holds  but  I  do  know  I  am  so,  so  grateful  for  all  my  blessings.    I  hope  you  enjoyed  the  contents,  articles,  and  interviews.    In  Gods  will  I  will  continue  to  grow  and  get  better.  I  am  always  looking  for  topics  and  contributors.    Also,  like  I  said  before  the  Holidays  are  here  and  it  is  time  we  realize  that  it  means  more  than  gift  giving.  It  means  opening  your  hearts  to  other.  Remember  to  reach  out  to  those  less  fortunate  than  others.  Travel  safe  and  see  you  in  the  New  Year!           Sincerely,           Janice  L.  Carter

THE TRUE BIRTHDAY OF JESUS

According to the best information I can find, Jesus was born on the 14th of May in 6 BC. Therefore His 2,000 birthday was on 14

May 1995. Regardless of which date you choose for the birthday of Jesus it was not on December 25th or January 6th and God never intended that it would be observed and celebrated. God wants us to remember the death, burial and resurrection of His Son, which is the Good News and the purpose of His coming. For several centuries the Christian assembly itself paid little attention to the celebration of Jesus' birth. The major Christian festival was Passover, the day of His Resurrection. Only gradually, as the church developed a calendar to commemorate the major events of the life of Jesus, did it celebrate His birth. Because the date of Jesus' birth had been forgotten, a day had to be selected. The Eastern Orthodox and the Eastern Rite churches chose January 6 while the Western church, based in Rome, chose December 25. It is known from a notice in an ancient Roman almanac that Christmas was celebrated on December 25 in Rome in AD 336. For 300 years His birthday was not celebrated so why should we celebrate it today? It is said the "Jesus is the reason for the season" but it never was so from the beginning. Today Christmas is a celebration for the god of possessions and merchandise. Santa Clause is this god's name and you had better watch out for he is keeping a list of who is naughty and who is nice. At least that is the teaching of the followers of this god. Our HOPE, SALVATION, and REDEMPTION is in Jesus not Santa. Yet it seems that more people believe in Santa than in Jesus. Whom will you choose to follow?

"Don't lay up treasures for yourselves on the earth, where moth and rust consume, and where thieves break through and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consume, and where thieves don't break through and steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is sound, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is evil, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! "No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other; or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You can't serve both God and Mammon." Matthew 6:19-24 WEB NOTE: Those who follow Christ are full of light while those who follow Santa are full of darkness.

Does this mean Christians cannot give gifts during Christmas and observe the holiday? In this area, as in many others, a balance must be sought. Churches should not have Christmas trees or anything to do with Santa Clause in their programs. Christian families should teach their children, at an early age, that Santa Clause is not real and does not bring gifts. They should not be taken to set on Santa's lap to recite a list of wants or be allowed to write him letters. They should be taught when questioned "What did Santa bring you?" to reply that my parents, grandparents, and others gave me my gifts. It is of the greatest importance that Christians are taught that all comes from God and all belongs to Him. We are the stewards of His gifts. To say Santa brings gifts will make God jealous for it damages His name, for He is the One who gives gifts not Santa. "If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!" Matthew 7:11 WEB

Did You Know About Kwanza???   By Frank Comer

Kwanza is an African American holiday, which celebrates family, community, and culture. It is celebrated from Dec. 26th – Jan. 1st.

Kwanza which takes it’s name from the word matunda ya kwanza ”which is Swahili meaning “first fruits”. Swahili is a language that is spoken throughout the continent of Africa.

Kwanza was established here in America in (1996) by Ron Maulana Karenga in the midst of the Black Freedom Movement to reaffirm and restore our rootness in African Culture.

Ron Maulana Karenga was a professor and also the chairman of the department of Black studies at California State University as well as being a community activist that promoted unity during theses turbulent times of the 1960’s, especially in the Black Communities. Ron Maulana Karenga started this vision in Oakland California.

Kwanza and its communal celebration reinforced the bonds between us (Blacks) as a world community to give us direction and purpose as a people during this alternative to Christmas.

Kwanza is a cultural holiday not a religious one and builds on (5) fundamental activities of Continental African “first fruits” Celebrations. Ingathering, reverence,

Commemoration, recommitment, and celebration.

Kwanza also focuses on the fundamental collective values that are rooted in African Culture by further establishing the 7 principles of Kwanza which are the building blocks of community, but also serve as its social glue.

The “Mishumaa Saba or the (7) candles, each having their own specific day and is coordinated by color, (3) Red, (1) Black and (3) Green. There is significance in the numerical order starting on Dec. 26th. Umoja (Unity), Dec. 27th Kujichagulia (Self-determination) Dec. 28th Ujima (collective work and responsibility) Dec. 29th Umaja (cooperative ecomomics) Dec. 30th Nia (purpose) Dec. 31th Kuumba (creativity) Jan. 1st Imani (faith). The very sentimental thought that went into the choosing of these colored candles was Influenced by the struggles that African Americans endured during their Black Liberation Movement. The color Black represented the people. The color Red represented the struggle and the color green represented the future and hope that comes from the struggle. The 1960’s gave birth to a movement and a need for a cultural identity and groundness that was Black in culture, thought and behavior. Kwanza filled that void and restored a much-needed recommitment to Unity that was rich in history and heritage of Africa.

Roy Hall D.R.I.V.E.N Everyone should be mentoring at least one person. Pour your life into them and help them reach their full potential! (Roy Hall)

Roy Hall is not just an Ohio State Buckeye football player who went off to play in the NFL as fifth round draft pick for the Indianapolis Colts in 2007. He would also go on to play for such teams as the New Orleans Saints and Detroit Lions. Roy Hall's accomplishment would be any guy's dream. That wasn't enough for him. He needed something a little more fulfilling in his life. Motivated by listening to high school student-athletes who visited his elementary school when he was a child, Roy committed himself early to setting goals, working hard and encouraging others along the way. Graduating from Charles F. Brush High School with a 3.6 GPA while earning First Team All-Ohio honors in football and basketball, he was awarded a full scholarship to play football at The Ohio State University. His collegiate athletic career included two National Championship appearances, the 2002 National Title, and a 4-1 record against rival, Michigan. Maintaining a 3.2 GPA, Roy’s collegiate experience culminated with a degree from The Fisher College of Business. With a passion for giving back, being a role model and developing young people has “driven” Roy establish the D.R.I.V.E.N. Foundation, which was founded in January 2009. This was his way of reaching out to the community on a platform grounded on his faith, life experiences and a sharing heart. When asked what the Foundation's goal is, he replied, "ultimately, our goal is to empower these residents to realize their full potential through programming, community events and outreach focused on strengthening families and networks of support".

The Driven Foundation Scholarship program empowers and encourages young men and women to passionately pursue and attain their goals while striving for academic excellence. Every year The Driven Foundation will award multiple $500.00 scholarships to "academically driven" senior high school students to assist in achieving their goals. A firm believer that success is defined not by material goods or individual recognition, but rather by serving and empowering others, Roy helped establish D.R.I.V.E.N. as his vehicle to be a friend, brother, educator, mentor, and provider to as many people as possible. According to Roy, “this foundation is not about money, publicity or simply to be seen as a ‘good deed’ in the eyes of my peers. It IS about challenging some choices, enriching lives, giving hope, taking time, teaching skills and making moments that mold futures.” Consistently striving to create opportunities for significant and sustainable positive change across a variety of populations, DRIVEN Community provides comprehensive youth development and multiple outreach programs in diverse and caring environments. Driven offers mentorship through interactive dialogues, personal appearances and community events that empower and inspire youth, as well as adults to believe in their potential and remain consistent with their values. Regardless of the venue, DRIVEN Community demonstrates and teaches skills that allow youth and adults to negotiate rough spots through their life while not compromising what they know is "the right thing" in their hearts.

Presently, 13.3 million children in America, or one in six, are poor. Minority children are most affected: one in three Black children and one in four Latino children are poor compared to one in 10 of those who are White. Some 5.8 million of these poor children live in extreme poverty - families with an annual income below $10,500 for a family of four - representing less than half the poverty level for this family size. D.R.I.V.E.N VISION

The Driven Foundation will achieve these goals by collaborating with government entities, faith and community based organizations. By implementing a holistic, evidence-based approach emphasizing youth education and adult career development we will enable residents of Central Ohio to build healthy and productive lifestyles for themselves and their community, while keeping families intact. We will connect people with health services, business and housing referrals, and personal/spiritual, as well as career development resources.

D.R.I.V.E.N is a personality trait he learned from his mother. A single mom she raised two children. Watching her struggle and maintain the persistent desire to keep her kids on the right track. He also respects the courage, faith and work ethic his mother displayed throughout his childhood to persevere through roadblocks and make it work. D.R.I.V.E.N supports a variety of causes that impact the lives of others. Engaging in sports drills and fitness exercises with youth around the community, football and basketball proceeds go to athletic departments to raise scholarship money but also to help children with literacy and provides food and gifts for people in the community.

Meechie Nelson Fresh Prince of Columbus

GT: Why do you call yourself the Fresh Prince of Columbus? Meechie Nelson: my mom worked 12-hour shift and that’s all I did was watch Fresh Prince of Bel Air all the time. He was always upbeat, even when something serious happened…its like he always looked at life as the cup half full. I related with him with his dad’s situation. Later On, I had a best friend and his father had this big house and I practically lived there because at this time me and my mom wasn’t getting along, so he became like my Uncle Phil. His life mirrored mines. He never changed who he was no matter what. I loved that positive upbeat vibe. GT: Is that why you are so into the 80's? Meechie Nelson: I love the 80's …The 80's were so cool and the early 90's…the reason I love it is if my mom was playing that, when I got home from practice and my mom would be playing that, that means she's in a good mood. If she was playing "Poison" i knew she was in a good mood or Kenny G, I knew she was cleaning. If she was listening to gospel, I knew she was in a bad mood. If she was listening to B.B.D or Tony, Toni, Tone …she's in a good mood and she's fine. GT: I love the old school about you, its good to see you embrace that and not worry about being called corny. If they (people) listen to your music they couldn’t call you corny any way. Meechie Nelson: Thank you! GT: Are you in college? Meechie Nelson: no GT: So what’s up with this frat thing? Meechie Nelson: I admire Frats, I love frat movies, and I love the cliquish. I always wanted to be apart of a brotherhood type thing. I wanted to start a movement. Frat is an acronym for " FAMILY RESPECTING ALL TALENTS". GT: We talk a lot about the support between Ohio rappers; you represent Westerville and embrace the inner city also. You did a free style where you gave a shout out to a lot of local rappers Meechie Nelson: I did all of 270, 15 minutes straight, I go 270 bars, I shouted out like a 100 artist. And still got heat for that for naming everyone, if I would have shouted out everyone in rap, I would have had to do 670, that’s an hour rap. There was no disrespect; it was just that the rap made sense. Some people have some crazy names that do not fit. I tried to pay homage as much as i could. You canʼt win them all. GT: Same thing happened with the Columbus Riot

Page 17: Girlfriends Talk Magazine

GT: So you make your own beats? Meechie Nelson: Yes, me and Kellez GT: Consider your style and the style of the inner city; do they embrace you fairly well? Meechie Nelson: Bitter sweet. Some people think I’m being corny and some people mess with it because they know I’m just being me. It go back to Real recognize real. GT: You shoot some very nice videos. They are so upbeat and colorful. Meechie Nelson: That's what I want, seem like a lot of people are so negative. That’s another thing I like about the early 80's and 90’s, a lot of people joke about this, the old school like say like Mix Master Ice, like when y'all went out it wasn't drama, when y'all went out it was fun. If I go out its sad I wouldn't even go to a Jeezy concert, and i beat bang him and Rick Ross I know if I go to that I have to go with like 30 dudes I have to make sure that everybody I’m with is ready to fight. It’s sad. That’s the thing I loved about the 90's it was fun, everybody's having fun, nobody worried about the next man. But today, these days I feel like everybody to focused on everybody else. If I walk in the club it’s mad girls but dudes just mugging me the whole entire night. GT: Clubs seem really big on what side of town one may rep. Is this why we cant seem to pull it together and support one another? Meechie Nelson: Columbus hip hop is very high school cliquish. I know where to go and when to go because there are mad haters in Columbus. So I try to stay to myself or my team. I rarely go out I usually pass out flyers and CD's GT: There is so much music and different styles here in Columbus, people should really just be open, collab, cross promote and support each other, we probably could get more doors opened. Meechie Nelson: There is mad talent here and so many different colors in the city. Right now Cleveland runs Ohio. I don't know how but I think that’s how Cleveland came up. MGK got multi millions, Chip comes down here and sell out shows. Cleveland is just open, Cleveland fans are more open than any people I know. Cleveland love their city. GT: Yea, we lack the support

Meechie Nelson: When other artist hate they kind of like hurt themselves. If that man gets on itʼs only going to help you eat eventually… GT: It takes one person to get on… Meechie Nelson: Exactly and when it happens, It happens. With Cleveland it was "Bone Thugs and Harmony" and recently " Kid Cutty" , If you notice at the end of the "Day and Night" video he has a tribute to Cleveland.

Page 18: Girlfriends Talk Magazine

GT: Do you think you are making a loud enough buzz to get the attention? Meechie Nelson: Not yet. GT: What else can you do to make your buzz louder? Meechie Nelson: I think this CD"Hot Chicks & Lacrosse Sticks" will do it for me. GT; Mix Master Ice said the most important thing to do is build a relationship with a DJ, have you done that? Meechie Nelson: I actually just decided what a DJ I wanted. There are DJs that have reached out to me. Like I said it is very high school cliquish. Even though are reaching out to me they are doing it just for the benefits not because they support the movement. or in support of me. So I hooked up with DJ Corrupt. GT: Have you always been this upbeat and happy? I know you lost your brother did that play apart in the tempo of your life and music? Meechie Nelson: Before I lost Deontae I did it too much, I started experimenting early. My brother was serious and before he passed he was just starting to loosen up. He was a great big brother. I would be at a house party and be drinking and smoking and he would walk in, I knew he was about to snitch on me. I was always up beat but when Deontae passed I woke up. I latterly sat for a whole month. Thatʼs when I started planning stuff. I use to rap and clown around, I started to take it more serious. Whenever you hear the drink being poured in our beats, that’s liquor being poured out for my brother to show respect. GT:If you could do a show with a celebrity who would it be? Meechie Nelson: Ferrell GT: From Ohio? Meechie Nelson: Louchiono GT: If you could help develop an up and coming artist, what would be some of the dos and dont's you have for them? Meechie Nelson: Professionalism and be yourself!

Success is the vision of conceptualization and also the coordination of calculated and methodical steps, all done while maintaining a realm of positivity in this dual, but opportunistic society. One must navigate through the obstacles of sabotage and purposely avoid the perils of self-destruction. The cause or even the interest at succeeding should be deliberate in aiding those who are seeking to improve or enhance their own life, or the lives around them. To understand success you must first have a thought, or the idea of what success is then you must posses the mental capacity to transform this understanding and how success originated from

this thought or idea and apply it. Success is not necessarily achieved by the standards that governs this society, but by unconventional and conventional standards alike. Success could be

as simple as working hard and displaying sheer determination or by possessing a inner most desire to change a situation or position that is conducive to ones existence, and ones instinct to survive. Success can also be achieved by breaking the code of systematic pre- determined failure (cycle of perpetuation) because of a geographical location, lack of financial independence and stability, social status, or in extreme cases racism. Success is achievements of a individuals personal accomplishments despite the early road of uncertainty supported by racial allegiances and their exaggerated numerical data that is designed to discourage and produce stagnation because of the lack of motivation. Success can create dissension among peers, professionals, envy among friends and cause separation in relationships. Success can in many more ways become littered with distractions that are strategically placed which then becomes the manifestation of sabotage capable of imploding causing weakness or failure. Sabotage then becomes this negative destructive force, further causing abnormal obstruction in the lives of those aspiring individuals hindering their success at prosperity, fulfillment, fame or even infamy!! One must be keen in understanding success and sabotage.

 Melody Moment

Drake

Drake’s new release “Take Care” is really touching to me. This CD seems to be more intimate and personal. I enjoyed this CD far more than the last two. Songs like “ I’M So Proud”, “Free Spirit” (Feat. Rick Ross), “Headlines” and “Look What You’ve Done “ adds fuel to the FIYA! Although the CD was leaked, it didn’t stop “Take Care” from delivering. The record debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 when it was released in November and has now sold more than a million copies five weeks after its release. Surely album sales will continue to rise once Drake kicks off his Club Paradise tour through North America on Feb. 14 to promote his sophomore LP. The tour will take Drake across the South and West coast before heading overseas to Europe at the end of March. Drake also plans to drop a mix tape with Rick Ross titled Y.O.L.O. (You Only Live Once) in 2012.

Weight Gain Season Begins It's here—whether you're ready or not. Just look at the seasonal shelves in your favorite store. Retailers like to call it ‘holiday season' but let's be more accurate. Weight Gain season begins now and runs straight through New Year's. The next two months will bring ample opportunity for you to expand your waistline. Of course the choice is yours. Why discuss it now and not mid way through December? Because now is your opportunity to plan for the weeks ahead. Once the craziness begins, you'll be too busy to put a plan into action. So let's take this moment of clarity, this calm before the storm, to outline a two-part plan that will save your waist from unwanted holiday inches. 1) Part One: Your Exercise Plan. Exercise is the first thing people cut when they get busy, and the holiday season is notorious for empty gyms. This year do something different—obligate yourself to exercise. Promising to yourself won't do it, you need to promise to others so that you won't drop the ball. • Sign up to work with a fitness expert – This is the perfect solution for consistent,

challenging and effective workouts. I'll give you the attention and assistance that you need to power through the holidays in better shape than ever – talk about motivating!

• Join a class – You won't be as effective exercising on your own during the busy holiday season, so join a class for accountability. Find something challenging that gets your heart rate elevated and uses strength training.

Get a serious exercise buddy – Some friends can be an awesome help while others end up pulling you down. When looking for an exercise buddy consider the following questions: - Do they share your fitness goals? - Are they fairly encouraging? - Do they give up easily? - Are they at your fitness level? 2) Part Two: Your Diet Plan. The holidays offer ample opportunities to indulge, so you need to hammer down some guidelines before hitting that buffet line. I'm not saying that you shouldn't indulge in any seasonal treats, but use moderation. Don't use the holidays as an excuse to eat until the point of being uncomfortable – will you really miss that bloated feeling? Decide which treats to cut out this year. • Don't bring edible treats to the office or to parties. You know that the leftovers will come

home and you'll end up eating far more than your share. This year do everyone a favor by not gifting fattening treats.

• When faced with a buffet line, load your plate first with greens, vegetables and lean meats before breads and heavier foods. Also drink water with your meal and keep alcoholic beverages to a 2-drink maximum.

• Beware of holiday drinks – most are brimming with calories. Hot drinks from coffee shops, cocktails at parties and creamy eggnog are all very enjoyable and all filled with empty calories. Stick with hot tea or unsweetened coffee.

• Everywhere you go during the holiday season brings you face-to-face with a plate of sweets. To avoid being a bore but without adding inches to your waist, try the one treat rule. Each time you're in a social situation that involves sweets just eat one, and enjoy your treat slowly.

• You don't have to gain weight this holiday season. The key is your mindset. If you approach the holidays with the mindset of, ‘I deserve to indulge and I shouldn't have to exercise' then you'll enter 2012 a few pounds heavier, a little less healthy, and with lower energy than ever before. I believe that you deserve better. I believe that you should enter 2012 in better shape than you are today, healthier than you've been in a long time, and with more energy than you thought possible. I'm here to help – call or reply to this email to set up a fitness consultation with me. I'd love to show you how to transform your body over the weeks to come.
