Twenty– Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

As the economy fluctuates, preoccupation with money remains constant. The most difficult cir-cumstances breed shrewd speculators who know how to play the market. They placed their capital astutely and realize a good return. We often ad-mire such people. They know how to take care of themselves. They proceed with cleverness and intelligence. They “succeed” in life. The manager in today’s gospel, accused of dissipating his master’s goods, rewrites all of the accounts. Jesus admires not his lack of scruples but his ingenuity. Before he is fired, he takes ad-vantage of the short time left to him to make friends. They will remember him when he is put out the door. What an opportunist has done in the affairs of this world, we must also do in the conquest of the kingdom of God. Jesus shows us a sound investment. He de-scribes Christian cleverness in the domain of se-ductive wealth. Its formidable powers of attrac-tion may draw us into offering it a worship which ought to be given only to God. We must restore money to its role as a means and not an end. We are only stewards of our master’s property. We can hold no exclusive title to what belongs to all his people. We must use it in the service of his Kingdom.

Dear Parishioners,

Pope Francis and Non-Ordained Diacon-ate for Women –The president of the Ger-man Bishops’ Conference says he is “very grateful” to Pope Francis for leaving open the possibility of a non-ordained diaconate for women, writes Christa Pongratz-Lippitt (Reporter for The Tablet, The International Catholic Weekly Founded in London in 1840). Archbishop Robert Zollitsch advo-cated the idea earlier this year, and in an in-terview with the German daily Suddeutsche Zeitung said: “He [Pope Francis} is aware that anyone who does not change moves backward and not forward.” The fact that Pope Francis had asked eight cardinals to advise him on curial reform showed “the Church should not remain as centralistic as it sometimes has been”, the archbishop said, adding that he hoped the German Bishops’ Conference would have a good dialogue partner with Pope Francis.

The election of Pope Francis shows forward movement and pro-gress in the Church’s attitude toward women. Recall that under the Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI the official policy of the Church regarding the very mention, discussion or question of ordination of women was “this issue is not to be dis-cussed!” The fact that a bishop in Germany has the new found courage to voice the suggestion for a “Non-Ordination of Women” shows great strides in the openness we are now experi-encing. Hopefully now under Pope Francis, Catholics are free in private informal gatherings to share and converse about issues from their personal faith journey.

Relics of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, a recent gift from the Carmelite Sisters of Lisieux have arrived at our own Shrine of the Little Flower, The Par-ish and School of Saint Therese in Albuquerque. These relics join the bones of Saint Thérèse secured by Archbishop Edwin Vincent Byrne in 1954 and encased in two marble altars. As well, they join the unique life-size reclining statue of Saint Thérèse in wax and clothed in a Carmelite habit made in 1926 and which is shared by the four other major shrines in the world to this most popular and dearly loved saint. The new relics are on display daily in a newly acquired bronze and gold reliquary. They will be taken out for public and personal veneration on Friday, September 27, at the Parish Fiesta Mass at 5:30pm and again on Tuesday, October 1, (Memorial of Theresa of the Child Jesus) at 8:00am (this Mass is observed as a Solemnity at The Shrine of the Little Flower).
