In 1974 Raj Asavarsquos fathersent him to America on a fly-now pay-later ticket

So when he landed in theUnited States he was already in debt

For two years Raj workedan 84-hour-week job wash-ing dishes to pay off his ticket living expenses and to savemoney for his tuition He learned to wash dishes well More

than that he learned the dignity of laborFrom a dishwasher in Michigan to the chief strategy offi-cer at Perot Systems his final designation Raj believes hehas learned many lessons along the way For instance helearned that life has three stages Learning earning andreturning

Raj and his wife Aradhana who had a thriving corporatecareer at Hewlett-Packard believe they are now in the thirdstage of their lives After quitting their jobs some years agothey devote all their time and resources to giving back

Raj first arrived in America to learn Computers were tak-

ing off in the 1970s when he got here and he enrolled for anassociate degree in business data processing in the eveningsHe also got a job working on the production line at Chryslercarrying car parts twice his size

A lucky encounter with a Chrysler manager helped himget a job in the computer department at the company When

Chrysler was going through difficult times and laid off sev-eral contractors an opportunity arose for Raj to prove his

talentHe later joined General Motors and when GM bought outthe Ross Perot-owned Electronic Data Systems he got a chance to work with the former Presidential candidate which he describes as a ldquophenomenal learning experiencerdquo

While pursuing his masters Raj wrote a paper on a strat-egy for EDS to enter India Besides getting him an A ithelped him get noticed by the senior management He wassent to India to start EDS operations there

Aradhana also got a job with EDS and with their two boysthe family moved to New Delhi This entrepreneurialopportunity coupled with the fact that the kids would ldquoseeIndia up closerdquo was exciting Less exciting was the fact thatit took them 9 months to find ldquoan honest landlordrdquo willing

to issue rent receipts for a house they would rent The Asava family lived at the Le Meridian hotel till then

In Delhi Raj and Aradhana had an opportunity to helplaunch the first ever global volunteer day to benefit the chil-dren of Naya Prayas an Indian NGO This initiative wasprofiled in a Harvard Business School case study on entre-

preneurship and philan-thropy

When the Asavasreturned to the US in 1998Raj decided to work for a startup for a couple of years A sense of burnoutleft him feeling restless and

questioning the ldquomind body and soul connectionrdquo He took a nine month sabbatical to ldquofind himselfrdquo practiced yoga

meditation and read the Gita An offer from Indian indus-trialist Anand Mahindra to be their consultant in the USmade him launch his own consulting firm in 2000

In 2007 he was offered the job of chief strategy officer atPerot Systems and focused on navigating the company through the economic downturn caused by the subprimedebacle Rajrsquos strategy was simple go after businesses that were low-to-no-risk namely the federal government andhealth care It worked During his years there the company actually gave out bonuses while others in the industry weredownsizing he says

Maurice Uenuma a colleague at Perot credits Rajrsquos abili-ty to ldquoask tough questions to stimulate thoughtful discus-sionrdquo While Peter Altabef a senior at Dell with whom Raj

worked later says hersquos ldquoadept at getting people to see outsidetheir normal boundariesrdquo

Meanwhile Aradhana moved up the ladder at EDS and

The second phase earning began to end in 2009 Aradhana was the first to quither job and step into the thirdphase returning

Aradhana at 46 was at thepeak of her career in 2009 Butshe gave it up after a five-minute consultation with RajShe wanted to channel her timeresources and skills towards theNGO Pratham and gladly trad-

ed in her 9-to-5 work day formore than a full dayrsquos work atPratham eventually serving asthe president for two years

Yogi Patel cofounder of Pratham USA said ldquoShe is very resourceful and is really tryingto help India fight the battle of illiteracy through their corpo-rate and Indo-American con-nectionsrdquo

Pratham is a cause both Asavas are passionate aboutThey have had they say a piv-

otal role in encouraging a groupof motivated individuals tolaunch an Austin chapter and joined their board as foundingmembers to guide and grow thischapter Today Prathamrsquos Austin outfit is growing the fastest and has become a rolemodel for upcoming as well as established chapters

Vandana Kumar president Pratham Austin who inci-dentally first heard about Pratham through an article in

India Abroad in 2009 said the Asavas ldquomade several tripsto Austin to help bring together a board create awarenessabout the cause and help with the right connections with-out wanting to be the center of attentionrdquo

Patel added ldquoNot only do they write checks or help raisefunds but I admire them because they make it a point to visit the Pratham schools in India even if they are located inslum areas talk to the parents teachers and students to geta firsthand feel for what Pratham does and needsrdquo

Raj followed in her footsteps in 2010 when Perot Systems was acquired by Dell With two grown children the Asavas were now empty nesters

Raj who was then 56 and Aradhana decided they had tomake the best use of their time pursuing hobbies spendingtime with family and working on causes that would make a difference Admitting that it was ldquotough to give up a healthy paycheckrdquo Raj did trade it for what he called ldquothe real liferdquo

The couple is now involved with almost 10 nonprofit

organizations and work in tandem to find the best possiblesolutions Aradhana quipped they are ldquoa twondashforrdquo one deal

Children education and health evolved as the three pillarsthey chose to invest their resources in They believed aninvestment and focus in these areas might eventually bringabout a transformation in millions of lives around the world Like they explain educating a child can break thecycle of poverty of a family Watching their two-year-old

grandson grow makes causes involving children ldquoresonaterdquoeven more with themNorth Texas Food Bank is another charity close to their

hearts Raj and Aradhana were shocked to learn that 20percent of the children in Plano Texas one of the mostaffluent cities in the US were malnourished They felt they needed to take a lead role in surmounting this problem

Aradhana became a council member at the North TexasFood Bank She regularly takes Indian groups to the food banks for volunteering She helped organize a Diwali Volunteer Experience at the 80000 sq feet NTFB warehouselast year and got about 200 desis involved in sorting food

Colleen Brinkmann chief philanthropy officer at the food bank said Aradhana ldquois a powerhouse and is constantly

thinking of creative ways to raise funds and awarenessrdquoRaj and Aradhana toured the Childrenrsquos Advocacy Centerof Collin County and were shaken to learn that there wereclose to 5000 reported cases of child abuse each year in thecommunity Impressed with the dedicated staff and the sys-tematic approach the center took to assist and represent the

children Raj joined the boardshortly after the tour

ldquoHaving come from the busi-ness worldrdquo Lynne McLeanchief executive officer CACCCsaid that Raj ldquohas the ability tothink strategically and thatrsquosreally helpful when yoursquore look-ing at future planningrdquo

She said Raj volunteered toldquofit the kids with the donatedshoesrdquo at the annual Back toSchool Fair organized by CACCC last year He handedout backpacks this year

It didnrsquot take long for Aradhana to figure out that vol-unteering while ldquorewardingand satisfying is equally chal-

lengingrdquo And also a completecontrast to the corporate world where work roles and responsi- bilities are clearly defined andpeople are held to it This isclearly not the case in a volun-teer organization where rolesand responsibilities may beunderstood but not alwaysadhered to After all this is nei-ther a paying job nor one for which the employee gets evalu-ated Working with such a work force says Aradhana takes

ldquolots and lots of patiencerdquoBack in the 1980s Raj spear-headed the formation of anorganization to engage theMaheshwari community (a smaller sect of the Rajasthani

Marwaris) across the USDwarka Taparia past president Maheshwari Mahasabha

for North America said Raj ldquohad a vision for the communi-tyrdquo He said Raj and Aradhana also launched the first

Maheshwari Patrika mdash a newsletter that was ldquoinstrumentalin connecting the community to meet around key culturalevents as well as keeping the community updated abouthappenings in other chaptersrdquo According to Raj Indian

Americans are the fastest growing community and they must contribute and help address the problems in the big-ger community They felt they wanted to use their timeeffort money and influence to be he says ldquoOne of the bridges between the Indian community and the larger com-munityrdquo

Raj described the younger generation of desisas ldquoidealisticknowledgeable and creative in their solutionsrdquo

To harness this idealism the couple introduced a Pratham Youth program and the first of its kind Kidsrsquo Club in theDallas Chapter Donor base dramatically increased becauseldquowhen children get involved parents also tend to getinvolvedrdquo he said

Reflecting on his life Raj said he realized that in these

ldquogolden yearsrdquo it was important to find causes where yourskills could make a difference take a lead role in giving back and enjoy time with family

As for Aradhana working with children who are foodchallenged abused illiterate due to financial reasons hasleft her unable to ldquojustify opulence in any formrdquo 983150

grandson grow makes causes involving children ldquoresonaterdquoeven more with themNorth Texas Food Bank is another charity close to their

hearts Raj and Aradhana were shocked to learn that 20percent of the children in Plano Texas one of the mostaffluent cities in the US were malnourished They felt they needed to take a lead role in surmounting this problem
