FR. CHRISTOS’ MESSAGE
3
You are the Voice of Christ in a Changing World“As the Father Has Sent Me, So I Send You”
John 20:21
Are you a good and faithful servant? As Orthodox Christians, we have beengiven a sacred trust. We have received the treasure of the Gospel – the GoodNews of Jesus Christ. With this sacred trust comes the great responsibility toshare it.
If we compare ourselves to the stewards in the parable of the talents(Matthew 25:14-30), do we multiply the treasure for which we are responsibleand for which we will be held accountable when the master returns? Or dowe bury our treasure in the ground, offering back only that which was givento us? Jesus said “As the Father has sent me, so I send you” (John 20:21). Atthe end of our life, will He say to us, “Well done good and faithful servant”?
As recipients and stewards of this great treasure, we are called to protect it, keeping its message pure. This is difficult to do in a timewhen knowledge of the faith is informed so much by popular culture. Orthodox Christians in America may rely too heavily on ourculture to bind people to the faith, often at the expense of knowledge of the Gospel message and the faith. As each generation becomesincreasingly assimilated, these cultural ties become less effective in keeping people engaged in the life of the Church. For many, knowl-edge of the faith is insufficient to appreciate the unique teachings and traditions of Orthodox Christianity. Without a clear knowledgeof our faith, we have become less able to share our it as we have been called to do.
We are called to guard the Gospel message, but not to hoard it. We are instructed not to hide our light under a bushel (Matthew5:15). As Jesus Christ sends us to be His voice in a changing world, we must also remove impediments or perceived impediments tonon-Orthodox inquirers that seek His Truth. What messages do we send out intentionally or unintentionally? What might cause theGospel message to be ignored or misunderstood?
Since the first Orthodox Christians came to America, the local parish has served as a guardian of the faith and also of the culturefrom which it was transplanted. Parishes must think carefully about how they share the faith with others. Thoughtful and sensitiveconsideration must be given to our outreach efforts in order to identify what aspects of our parish life may be creating potential stum-bling blocks for others.
As we share the voice of Christ, the message we share is one of hope, truth, grace, divine power, life and invitation. In this busy,ever-changing world, His voice of wisdom is needed to guide us in discerning what is good, what is true and what will bring us closerto Him and to one another.
We live in a physical world that places great value on material possessions. Material possessions and wealth may bring power andstatus. But wealth and possessions can be fleeting. Circumstances change. It is the voice of Jesus Christ and the truth of His Gospelthat remain constant. In our spiritual relationship with our Creator, we realize that we are called to be good stewards of His creation. And as stewards of His Gospel, we are called to use our material, worldly possessions to meet the needs of others.
The base from which we serve as the Voice of Christ in a Changing World is the parish. A strong parish provides opportunitiesfor sharing the Good News of Christ, for welcoming those that are searching for a spiritual home, and a base from which we are sentout into the world. The parish also provides a place for worship, community and education in the faith. To be stewards of the Gospel,we need to be stewards of our parish. This requires the vision and inspiration to see the parish, not as it is, but as it could be. We arecalled to offer ourselves and our treasure to make our local church all that is can be.
We conclude with these words of Archbishop Demetrios of America: “…we are called to be the light of the world; we are sent intoa changing world to offer the voice of Christ to those who are not connected to the Church. This includes those who have neverheard the voice of Christ, others who have not been prepared to listen, and still others who need a new invitation to return to Him.For these and even others who are distracted by disparate and deceptive ideas, the voice of Christ through us offers meaning andpurpose in truth and love. In fulfilling our commission from God, we must continue to strengthen our ministries of outreach andevangelism so that our clergy and laity have the guidance, programs, and resources to offer His voice clearly and effectively” (from theReflections of Archbishop Demetrios of America on the Theme of the Clergy-Laity Congress of 2016).

PARISH COUNCIL PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Paula Schembri
Alpha and omega. Beginning and end. In our lives we en-counter so many new beginnings and just as many endings. Thebeginning of the new calendar year. The beginning of the eccle-siastical year. The beginning of the school year. Each of thesenew beginnings brings us opportunity, promise and hope. Theygive us the opportunity to begin anew. As the calendar new yearapproaches, we hear of new year’s resolutions to lose weight, be-come more active, stop smoking – the list goes on and on. Thenew school year gives students the opportunity to improve theirgrades, take up a new sport, language, instrument or to becomeinvolved in student government or a school club. Same is true fora new ecclesiastical year when we consider our practice of Ortho-doxy and contemplate increasing our church attendance, prayerand bible reading. This is all very interesting to me because itmakes me realize how perfectly God created us. You see, each andevery day brings a new beginning and an ending. When we wakeup every morning, we have the opportunity to start over and get
it right, whatever “it” is. Every day we can choose to make what-ever changes we deem necessary to improve ourselves and becomethe person God intended us to be. We do not have to wait for anannual new beginning. We can make up our minds to makechanges and improvements any time we want! God created us tobe intelligent, independent thinkers and on top of it gave us freewill. It is incumbent on each of us to be cognizant of these giftsand to use them as best we can each and every day of our lives.
In closing, I want to share with you that my favorite Sundaysare those in which we have a 40 day blessing and a memorial serv-ice when we acknowledge the most basic of beginnings and end-ings. It is on those days that we celebrate the beginning of lifeand the beginning of one’s life in the body of Christ as a memberof the church. It is also on those days that we remember and prayfor the souls of our parishioners’ loved ones. We share in the painand sorrow that comes with the end of life. Just one more thingthat I love about our Orthodox faith!

THE LANCASTER CAMPUS LAND DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE
By the time you read this message the main edifice (FamilyLife Center and Chapel) will be up and standing. Electric, heatingand plumbing work will be continuing. The dome of the chapelshould by then be delivered.
After years of waiting and overcoming difficulties we are nowmoving at a very quick pace. Week after week the Lancaster Cam-pus is being transformed.
The money that was made available to us via the HelenVafiopoulos bequest, donations and the church investment ac-count transfer is being used at the same quick pace.
We, the members of the Annunciation parish, who voted atthe Special General Assembly of April 21, 2016 for this project tobecome a reality, had also decided that the remainder of the proj-ect budget and further expenses for the completion of the interiorof the chapel would be the challenge of individual parishionersand families. Now, is the time to stand up and deliver.
Let us contribute what we can, let us stretch our limits a bit. Itis for the future of our local church community, for our youth, for our seniors, for all of us and for a better witness of the Ortho-dox Christian faith. Let us move from a concept of comfortablegiving to a concept of sacrificing something for the greater good.Let our support to the church project cost us something.
The Land Development Committee wishes to challenge parish-ioners (families, groups and individuals) to get naming rights bydonating for specific rooms and areas within the Family Life Cen-ter and the Chapel. They could name the space in honor or inmemory of their loved ones.
To start with, the whole Family Life Center will be named inhonor of Helen Vafiopoulos.
A donation of $500,000 toward the chapel will allow a familyor group of parishioners to name the Chapel, i.e. to pick the nameof the saint or saints after which the Chapel will be called.
A donation of $300,000 will allow the donor(s) to put theirname on the Banquet Hall.
$100,000 will give naming rights to the beautiful Lounge(Gathering) to the side of the banquet hall.
$50,000 gives naming rights to the Library Gift Shop. Thiswill also help equip the Library with books and electronic media.
Also, $50,000 will give naming rights to the Youth RecreationRoom. What better way to help the young generations realizetheir great potential within the church.
A $100,000 donation to equip the kitchen will give namingrights there.
$25,000 for naming the priests’ office.
$30,000 for naming the Administrative Office.
$30,000 for naming the Board Room.
We hope and pray that enough of us will rise to this challenge. We should remember that our Church doesn’t demand tithing, even though it is God’s command in the Bible. Let us at least feelobliged to respond to the call for this extraordinary need. Let usheed Saint Paul’s call when it comes to charitable giving, ‘He whosows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bounti-fully will also reap bountifully. So let each one give as he purposesin his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheer-ful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have anabundance for every good work’ (2 Cor, 9:6-9).

The Sunday School staff would like to wish the students of ourschool a blessed Thanksgiving season and upcoming ChristmasSeason and let remember those who are less fortunate. Thanks-giving is something we in the Orthodox faith have every Sundayas we receive Communion and give our Thanksgiving prayers afterwards. Losing Susan
Suffering. Why is there so much suffering? While the answers to thisquestion reside with God alone and Scripture faithfully reminds us thatsuffering can ultimately lead to hope (Rom 5:3-5), sometimes beingthankful for our trials is very difficult. However, sometimes, we can findcomfort in observing or sharing in the trials of others. In some sense, thebook selection for January’s discussion, Losing Susan, offers this oppor-tunity.
From the bookseller:
The Story of Brain Disease and the Priest's WifeThis is the story of Susan--a wife, mother, Christian believer, lover of chil-dren, writer of stories, and woman of extraordinary intellect. Susan wasdiagnosed with a brain tumor in her late thirties. Although it was suc-cessfully treated, the process led to her slow, unending decline.
In this personal story of love and loss, Victor Lee Austin shares how car-ing for his wife during her painful struggle with brain cancer and its aftereffects brought him face-to-facewith his God and with his faith in unsettling ways. God gave Victor what his heart most desired--marriageto Susan--then God took away what he had given. Yet God never withdrew his presence. Weaving togetherautobiographical details and profound theological insights, this powerful narrative shows that we are calledto turn to God in the face of suffering.
Losing Susan is now available in the church bookstore and library. For book discussion updates, visit:www.hocalibrary.blogspot.com.
Please note: Discussions of spiritual material with your father confessor, spiritual father or mother arestrongly encouraged.

Thank you to Mr. and Mrs. George Basil for their donation tothe Church Library in memory Eugenia Peppas.
To quote Katherine Graham, “To love what you do and feel that it matters – how could anything be more fun?” We don’t usuallythink in terms of fun when we think of our libraries. But after giving it some thought, the fun is a bonus we don’t often realize or ac-knowledge. It has been a gift for me to be able to volunteer in our Church Library. I greatly enjoyed my work. I think I have receivedas much from the people I have worked with as I have given.
As I resign my position as library coordinator, I would like to thank everyone for the support you have given me through the years. The library has become a valuable resource for the congregants and I know my own participation has brought me into contact withmany spiritual and wonderful people. It has been a privilege to serve our church and our community.

Community Christmas Card 2016
During the upcoming Thanksgivingand Christmas holidays, thousands of
people here in the Buffalo area will wake up hungry, homeless, and hurting. My heart aches for those who will spend the holidayseason on our neighborhood streets. We’re reminded of Jesuswords, “…when you give a banquet, invite the poor…” (Luke 14:13).And that’s exactly what we’re planning to do.
Orthodox Action is getting ready for hundreds of hungry, homeless, and needy people to join us in the Demakos CommunityCenter for our 10th Annual Thanksgiving Day Dinner. Many peo-ple continue to struggle and some are facing their first holidayseason on the streets desperate for help and hope. However, wewant all of our guests to feel “at home” as they enjoy a home-cooked feast with people who care.
You’ve been partnering with us these last 10 years helping andsupporting us in our mission. Your generous support has been agreat blessing to the Ministry of Orthodox Action. We’re so grate-ful for your gifts and prayers that have, over the years, helped usmeet some of the needs of the people we serve.
Because you care, today we want to invite you to help oncemore – both financially as well as the volunteering of your time– in an extraordinary way this holiday season. For someone who is facing the bleak prospect of spending Thanksgiving andChristmas on the streets, your generosity will make an encourag-ing difference!
I believe you’ll agree that everything in life is easier to face ifyou don’t face it alone. Everyone has something to give. In fact,it’s incredible what happens when a lot of people decide to “dowhat they can”. We each do our part, then God adds His part, and together we make a huge impact. You’ll help our ThanksgivingDinner guests and our Veterans know that they’re not alone!
Orthodox Action’s holiday events make special memories – forhungry, homeless neighbors, and for our entire Church community!
Additionally, we invite you to join Orthodox Action as we cel-ebrate the Christmas Season with the residents of WNY VeteransHousing Coalition (W. Utica & Main St.), which provides housingand services for homeless and disabled veterans.
Join us for lots of fun as we bring Christ’s love to our nation’s heroes!
• Saturday, December 10th, 1:00 PM (right after GreekSchool). Sorting and bagging of Christmas gifts for the veteransin the Demakos Community Center. Pizza and refreshments willbe served.
• Saturday, December 17th, 12:30 PM. Meet in DemakosCommunity Center. We will go over together. Caroling at WNYVeterans Housing Coalition by our Sunday School and GreekSchool children. Refreshments served and distribution of Christ-mas gifts to the Veterans.
Children are especially encouraged to participate in the car-oling and gift-giving for our Veterans on Dec. 17th. Sign up inthe Community Center during the Coffee Hour.
Each week through November 27th, we hope to collect 114of each of the following items on the following days. Note:There’s still time to “catch up” on the October items!
Please leave items in the Shopping Cart in the Community Center.

LIVING WATER
This month we return to and finish with our selection among Abba Poemen’s sayings.
48. Abba Poemen said to Abba Anoub, ‘Turn away your eyes lest they behold vanity; (cf Ps. 118:37) for license causes souls to perish.’
49. He also said, ‘Wickedness does not go away with wickedness, but if someone does you wrong, do good to him, so that by your actionyou destroy his wickedness.’
50. Abba John who had been exiled by the Emperor Marcian said, ‘We went to the desert one day to see Abba Poemen and we wantedto ask him about purity of heart. But the elder did not know Greek and no interpreter could be found. So, seeing our disappointment, theelder began to speak Greek, saying, ‘The nature of water is soft, that of the stone is hard, but if water fall drop by drop, it wears away thestone. So it is with the word of God; it is soft and our heart is hard, but the man who hears the word of God often, opens his heart to thefear of God.’
51. Abba Poemen said, ‘Teach your heart to guard that which your tongue teaches.’
52. A brother asked Abba Poemen, ‘How should I behave in the place where I live?’ The elder said, ‘Have the mentality of an exile inthe place where you live, do not desire to be listened to and you will have peace.’
53. Abba Poemen also said, ‘If a man understands something and does not practice it, how can he teach it to his neighbor?’
54. He also said, ‘A man who lives with others ought to be like a stone pillar; hurt him, and he does not get angry, praise him and he isnot puffed up.’
55. He also said, ‘Do not lay open your conscience to anyone whom you do not trust in your heart.’
56. A brother asked Abba Poemen, ‘What can I do about my sins?’ and the elder said to him, ‘Weep interiorly, for both deliverancefrom faults and the acquisition of virtues are gained through compunction.’
