Glass Buttes, Oregon: 14,000 Years of Continuous Use

(from a presentation by Daniel O. Stueber)

The article below is a summary by Anita Lukes of a presentation given by Daniel O. Stueber at the 2017 WAA Annual Meeting at Husum, Washington. His complete article with references can be downloaded for free at academia.edu and

is as follows:

Stueber, D.O. and Skinner, C.E., 2015, Glass Buttes, Oregon: 14,000 Year of Continuous Use In Toolstone Geography of the Pacific Northwest, Edited by Terry L. Ozbun and Ron L. Adams, pp 193-207. Archaeology Press, Simon Fraser

For more than 14,000 years Glass Buttes, one of the largest obsidian sources in Oregon, has been a source of high quality toolstone for Native American flintknappers. Glass Buttes’ obsidian is of high quality, abundant, and in many colors. The colors include translucent and banded black, red, mahog-any, gold sheen, silver sheen, gray-green banded, rainbow, and banded or mottled multi-color combinations. It is found in large blocks or boulders, some weighing more than 100 pounds. Figure 1 shows many of these Oregon obsidian source sites. Because of the quality of Glass Buttes obsidian, it has been prized among Native American and First Nation people of North America. Obsidian from this source contin-ues to be coveted by present-day knappers.

X-Ray Fluorescence

The glass-like nature of obsidian made it a material of choice for tool making and therefore a valuable trade commodity. Over the last 30 years, the use of x-ray fluorescence (XFR) characterization methods has enabled researchers to under-stand the movement of obsidian tools and toolstone across the landscape. Figure 2 shows areas not only in Oregon, but in Canada and California where Glass Buttes obsidian arti-facts have been discovered.

Blood Residue Extraction

Blood residue on toolstones can now be extracted and tested with antisera from modern day animals that are relatives of ancient, extinct animals. A positive reaction between the modern day animal anti-sera and the ancient blood residue

would indicate a relationship between the two animals. This relatively new technique aids in understanding game hunting strategies used by the ancient hunters and how hunting strat-egies changed over time.

Joanne Mack PhD, working with the Bureau of Land Man-agement (BLM) conducted the largest survey to date of the Glass Buttes area in 1975. In a 19 square mile area, the sur-vey located 131 sites. These sites are described as campsites, knapping stations, hunting blinds, and rock quarries. The projectile points recovered range in age from 13,000 years BP to 900 years BP. The points included a fluted clovis point, Western Stemmed and foliate points, Northern Side-notched, Pinto, Humbolt, Elko, and Rose Springs series points.

Further analysis on Mack 1975 points in 2011

In 1975 XFR and blood residue extraction techniques were in their infancy and rarely used. Hence, the importance of fur-ther analysis with XFR and blood residue extraction in 2011 on 41 obsidian and FGV (fine grain volcanic material) projec-tile points on loan from the University of Oregon Museum of Natural and Cultural History..

Table 1 shows the selected artifacts (at the bottom), assigned numbers 1-41 for purposes of analysis and discussion. The table at the top shows the type, source, distance from the source, and results of blood residue.

Note that artifact #9 lists “camel” as the source of the blood residue. Sites at Fossil Lake, Paisley Caves, and in southwest-ern Canada have produced evidence for the existence of this extinct species in association with human activity. Camels in these areas became extinct at the end of the Pleistocene.

Protection of Glass Buttes

A Glass Buttes Knap-In is still held every year in the Spring. These knappers generally focus their activities on specific areas as requested by the Bureau of Land Management. BLM has a general policy that states that an individual is allowed to collect reasonable amounts for non-commercial purposes, not to exceed 250 pounds of raw material per person per year (Code of Federal Regulations under 43 CFR 8365 “Rules of Conduct”). Unfortunately, some individuals exploit this re-source and take hundreds of pounds each year.

There is no specific protection for Glass Buttes. Several groups have recommended that the area be surveyed and sites evaluated for inclusion in the National Register of His-toric Places.

Dan Stueber has been a flintknapper and practitioner of primitive technol-ogies since 1982. He has studied flintknapping and lithic technology with Dr. John Fagan and Dr. Everett Callahan, and for the last two decades has served as teaching assistant to several of Dr. Fagan’s lithic analysis classes and workshops and to Dr. Callahan’s flintknapping master classes. He has taught at the University of Victoria and co-taught courses with Dr Fagan in all aspects of lithic technology and analysis for Portland State University, Malheur Wildlife Refuge and to archaeologists with the US Forest Service US Park Service, US Bureau of Land Management and the California De-partment of Transportation. Dan was the Lithic specialist at Archeological Investigations Northwest for 25 years, where he conducted technological analysis, including the entire assemblage from Marmes Rockshelter (45FR50)*, taught lithic analysis and contributed to reports on hundreds of prehistoric sites in the Pacific Northwest.

About the Web Manager

Janeen Grohsmeyer first heard the word “atlatl” about ten

years ago when her son, Ryan, came home from a Boy

Scout camping trip in Maryland and talked about the neat

weapon he gotten to use. She attended a few nearby events

with him (and helped carry the darts to and from the car)

and more recently has enjoyed trips to Letchworth Park in

New York and Cahokia Mounds in Illinois. She has worked

as an engineer for the US Navy and the US Army, and she

has been a web manager for two churches and the League

of Women Voters of Maryland. Janeen enjoys gardening,

science fiction, and puzzles, and she likes learning about

linguistics, science, and history. She lives in Kentucky with

her husband and daughter.

There are many changes at WC this year. First there is a NEW LOCATION. It will be held about 30 minutes drive

east of the town of Florence (AZ). It is a beautiful site that has all the Sonora Desert has to offer. There will be a

fee to be on site. There are no fees to participate in the Atlatl and Archery activities. The fees allow access to the

This will allow them to camp providing their own food. We will provide a safe camp, water, and port-a-potties.

You will be allowed to participate in the competitions, slide shows and evening activities.

• Fee Schedule: Adults (17yrs and up) $50 per person for the week

need to register at full price and do it soon before registration is closed. You will need to be preregistered prior to

DATE/STATE EVENT

How to Submit ISAC Events for Posting

There have been many changes to the website over the past couple of months due to the diligent work of our new web-

master, Janeen Grohsmeyer. One of these changes is a new method of posting events to the website.

In the past, the only method was to send your event information and description to the Executive Secretary.

Currently, there are three ways to post:

1. You may enter your event information on the website (you must be a member) by going to ”Events” and choosing How to “Host an Event.” Scroll down towards the bottom of that page and you will see a section starting with “You may submit your event…” Click on “Create an event” (in red) and you will be taken to a page where you can enter the name of your event, a description of the event, the date(s) of the event, and times (in 24-hour format). It is also suggested to check any applicable event categories (usually ISAC Event and Atlatl Throw). When finished, click on the Publish bar and save the draft. If you have not included all of the necessary sections, a notice will come up on top saying that your event could not be saved because it is missing elements, and will list those elements. When you get the draft saved, contact the WAA Executive Secretary at [email protected], and your event will be

reviewed and published.

2. You can enter your event information via the Contact Page (in red). All required information must be included. Once you have done that, your message will be forwarded to the Executive Secretary, who will enter it in the Events Calendar.

3. You can still request event postings by sending the information to the Executive Secretary [email protected] (preferred!) or calling 740-698-7131, or by snail mail sent to Debbie Andrews, 2041 Reynolds Ave., Albany, OH 45710.

Once the event is posted on the website, the newsletter editor will copy the events for publishing in the newsletter if the event has been posted by the publishing deadline (see deadlines on event calendar, page 11 of this Newsletter)

Reminders!

Events MUST be submitted no less than 30 days prior to the event date. In order to request an exemption to the dead-line, the request must be in writing and must state the reason that the organizer cannot schedule his contest at a later time. The request will be dealt with by a three person committee rather than by the secretary alone. To expedite ap-proval, it is recommended that such requests be sent simultaneously to all three members of the committee. They can

be contacted as follows:

Debbie Andrews John Whittaker Jon Wood

2041 Reynolds Ave. Grinnell College, Box 805 17682 Rt. AA Albany, OH 45710 Grinnell, IA 50112 Madison, MO 65263 (740) 698-7131 (641) 269-3447 (660) 291-9269 [email protected] [email protected] [email protected]

All events must have a name, description, location, street address of the location, dates and times to be included in the

posting.

If you have any questions about posting an event, please contact Debbie Andrews.

T-Shirt Design Contest

During the Annual Meeting last August, the Board and WAA members suggested that a contest be held for a new World Atlatl Association t-shirt. A WAA logo on the front of a t-shirt has been the design that the organization has

sold for well over 15 years. Individual contest sponsors have designed and sold t-shirts for their events as well.

If you have a great idea for a new WAA t-shirt design, send it by mail or e-mail to Frank Lukes, the editor of THE ATLATL newsletter. The Board of Directors will narrow the number of entries and we will see if we can figure out a way

for all of you to vote for your favorite design (again either by mail or email).

Find Frank’s address on the first page of the newsletter, his e-mail is [email protected].
