Overview

Glazing Society of India (GSI) is an independent, inclusive body working on glass and glazing products for standardization and product certification.

Page 3: Glazing Society of India

• GSI is a not-for-profit Organization, registered as a society under the Society Registration Act 1860. It is an inclusive body made up of members from Glass Manufacturing companies, Glass processors, Builders, Contractors, Developers, Glass Fabrication companies, Installers, testing laboratories, Policy formulation bodies, Educational institutions & Research bodies, Glass Experts, Stakeholders of the industry and Government of India.

Page 4: Glazing Society of India

• GSI aims to develop and administer independent rating and labeling systems in areas like Safety, Energy etc for glazing of all kinds - windows, doors, skylights etc.

Why GSI?• GSI – Filling an important need gap

in India.• There is an increasing trend in India

towards standardization, codification and rating of the glazing products used in the architectural segment. This is happening due to several reasons :

Page 6: Glazing Society of India

• Increasing usage of modern products and systems in the construction sector leading to adoption of international standards in usage of glazing products in buildings

• Greater awareness on safety issues leading to the evolving of Safety Guidelines for the usage of Glass in Buildings

• Increasing importance attached to sustainable development leading to evolving of Codes and standards for energy efficient glass usage.

• “Glazing Society of India proposes to address that need”

Objectives To promote standardization and

certification of glazing products by running Certification Programs under which

o authentic, accurate and independent information on the performance parameters of glazing products will be made available

o the concerned products and manufacturers can display their certification openly in the form of labels which can be inspected by all.

Page 8: Glazing Society of India

o establish simulation & testing centers, inspection agencies and compliance mechanisms for the verification of certified products.

To support governmental legislations and codes by creating a framework for their implementation through certification activities.

To further the understanding of the technology of Glass and Glazing.

To spread awareness on Glass and Glazing Technology. To co-operate and assist other societies, institutions and

organizations which are working in the area of standardization, certification, research and development.

GSI’s Mission "To be an independent building

envelop rating, standardization and certification institution which will service the industry by providing authentic, accurate and unbiased testing performance results on Glazing and other elements of Building Envelop so as to further the development of safe, sustainable, energy efficient building envelop design, products and services.“

Testing and Certification Facilities

GSI is committed to promote standardization and certification of building envelopes in India. Towards this, GSI has collaborated with eminent academic institutions to establish two state-of-the-art and dedicated testing facilities for glazing products, windows and Facade. These two facilities ensure that the samples are subjected to the most rigorous testing procedures and comply with the highest quality standards. The testing programmes at the facilities deploy both computer simulation and physical testing of samples.

• The two testing and certification facilities are the Building Energy Performance Lab (BEPL) and Structural Glass Research and Testing Facility (SGRT). BEPL, located at CEPT University, Ahmedabad, is the testing facility for energy performance of building envelopes and the SGRT at IIT_Madras, Chennai is the testing facility for structural performance of processed glass.

Building Energy Performance Lab (BEPL)• The Building Energy Performance Lab (BEPL) at Ahmedabad is the

energy performance testing and certification facility. It is a unique collaboration between the GSI and Centre for Environment and Planning Technology (CEPT) University and supported by Ministry of New and Renewable Energy Resources (MNRE) and USAID. Established in September 2009, BEPL is the first-of-its-kind facility for testing building envelopes for Energy Performance in India. BEPL, CEPT University is NABL accredited and has obtained Round Robin Certification from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), USA.

Structural Glass Research and Testing Facility (SGRT)• The Structural Glass Research and Testing Facility (SGRT) is the

testing facility for structural performance of processed glass. Part of the Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Madras, SGRT is a collaborative effort between the GSI and IIT Madras. Funded and supported by Glass Manufacturers and Federation of Safety Glass (FOSG), it is a one-of-its-kind testing facility for processed glass in India.
