I have been trained and certified by American Writers and Artists, Inc. – the leader in

copywriter training. Although I am employed in a pipe support manufacturing company

I do not get involved with day- to-day engineering as I am primarily a writer. In our small

manufacturing company whatever needs to be written to senior personnel in other

companies was most likely written by me. I have written White Papers, B2B, direct

response, e-mails and other types of copy as part of my job.

Life is apparently not easy for anyone, so what could be of greater importance in any

person’s life than knowing more sensible ways to live? In the 1970’s I picked up a copy

of “I Ain’t Much Baby but I’m All I’ve Got” by Jess Lair and because in the deepest part

of my heart I wanted to love people and have them love me I was very taken with this

book. Since then I have become a Wayne Dyer fan, probably read 8 or more of his

books, and at least 100 other self-help and personal development books (including

those by Tony Robbins, Sri Kumar Rao, Neale Donald Walsch, Dr. Eben Alexander, Jack

Canfield, T. Harv Eker, Deepak Chopra, Maxwell Maltz, Bob Proctor and many others)

which discussed various things about life and humanity. Seems to me, we all want to

live better lives and I very much like to read and research in this area.

Cattle are raised in the Nebraska Sandhills and because of the cold and snowy weather

you have to feed them hay in the winter months.

These days the way this is done it to put up the hay in large cylindrical bales and string it

out in the winter. But, in years past the most common way was to stack your hay. That

meant piling the hay in large neat piles in the summer months to be hauled out on sleds

and fed out with pitch forks in the winter months.

The first process was to cut the grass and let it dry, for maybe a day. Then it was raked

into windrows so as to make it easier to push the loose hay, with a tractor sweep, to the

hay stacker.

When I was 16, I drove a John Deere Model B semi-mounted rake which meant that it

had two pieces of angle ”iron” about 15 feet long attached to the front of the tractor

frame, one on each side. These angles (at about 45 degrees to the tractor engine) led

back to the frame of the rake.

This particular John Deere was a two-cylinder model, made in 1939. It was hand started

by turning a flywheel on the left-hand side. This is also the side where the hand choke

was located.

Early this summer morning I started my tractor and was slowly driving it towards the

fuel wagon when the engine being cold, started missing and sputtering.

I stepped out on the left angle and pulled the choke up to keep the engine running.

However, the soles of my shoes were slick from grease and I fell off the angle with my

legs inbound under the belly of the tractor and my chest right in front of the left rear

tire.

Military Service

When I was in my early twenties, I signed up for the Marine Corps. After strenuous

physical training, technical education and learning about leadership I was sent to

Vietnam in 1968.

I was certainly one of the more fortunate fellows because instead of being sent to the

“boonies” I wound up in a HAWK (surface-to-air) missile battalion in Danang, Vietnam,

a medium sized city near the south-central coast. It was here where I spent part of my

tour of duty in Headquarters down by the military air strip which was occasionally

rocket attacked by the North Vietnamese and part of the time in Battery “B” up at the

top of beautiful Monkey Mountain which was generally peaceful in those months.

I had time to reach up and push on the tire with both arms and as it happened the

tractor immediately died with the result being only a very thorough scare.

At 16, I was left wondering what happened and if God had intervened and stopped the

tractor right before it ran over me. A larger thought is what happens unseen? Was it all

just coincidence?

One time when I was living up on the mountain, something happened to me which

made me feel very fortunate and full of wonder about coincidence in our lives. Are

there any accidents or is it all human intention?

It was a nice day on a Sunday in early 1969 and I and some other fellows had some free

time and we went to Danang in the morning.

The Han River begins in the Quang Nam Province and spills out into the South China

sea at Danang. It is a wide river and deep enough for barges and boats to haul supplies

from overseas into Danang for further distribution.

Along both sides of the river, the poverty-stricken native Vietnamese lived in wooden

houses. Most notably the holes in the walls of their houses were patched with the

metal salvaged from beer cans and the like. In those days, so many of the Vietnamese

people had nothing.

There was a Seabee constructed bridge across the river and we Marines crossed the

river on the road to the PX and again on the way home after looking around in the area

we called “Dog Patch”. There was a large cargo ship right by the bridge and it was in

the process of unloading boxes of ammunition. Nothing new about that so no one paid

much attention.

However, in the early evening when we got back on the mountain and home again

some of the guys were standing together looking and talking, as young men do. And

while we were looking at the sunset, sort of back of the city, the cargo ship we were so

close to blew up.

A spout of grayish-red smoke went up in a mushroom cloud and looked to us like a

miniature atomic bomb.

We later found out that the wooden houses anywhere near to the ship were flattened

by the force of the explosion. All the sailors in the ship were killed.

Had the accident happened a few hours earlier we would have been no more in this

world. Was it coincidence? Some of us did not think so.

Life and Work in Saudi Arabia

In August 1980 I was working for the Naval Air Rework Facility in Alameda, California.

This when “Time” and “Newsweek” magazines talked about the need for engineers so

it was “happy days are here again” for young engineers and we were all enthusiastic.

A friend said he was going to go to the Bechtel job fair and get a great job but as it

turned out he did not go and I was the one who went and wound up working for

Bechtel, San Francisco.

My first assignment at Bechtel was to “The Ras Tanura Modernization” project which

was a major engineering job for Saudi Aramco with the Front End Engineering Design

(FEED) being done in San Francisco. During this time, I got to know several Americans

who were working in Saudi Arabia and found that their lives had more adventure than

those who stayed in home town America.

Major projects take a long time to be finished so after 2 years work on it, there was

exposure to so many new ways of thinking. Even though I did not have a lot of

experience in the oil and gas industry, I knew I wanted to go overseas on this project.

So, after informing my seniors several times, I was eventually asked if I wanted to make

a field trip for the project.

I jumped at the chance to go and it was an exciting trip. Aramco was and is a major

company with enough pumps, pipes, tanks, columns and heat exchangers to keep any

engineer interested.

It also turned out that it was a lot easier to save money while working in Saudi than on

a job in the USA. So upon the completion of the job for Bechtel, I looked around, found

another job in a company located in Saudi Arabia and though I have changed

companies a few times and moved around some (traveled all over Saudi) I have been

here since.

Helping a Friend with Team Work

One Tuesday night in May 2018, I got a call from my friend Marty. He was overbooked and required some help. Because he was too busy to do it himself, he needed a group leader to guide a study. This study involved a certain way of reviewing drawings to make sure that a new facility was safe. It was necessary that his engineers quickly do this drawing review for a waste water disposal facility in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. As the group leader for this kind of work, you need to be current. When you are idle for some time you forget your training and you lose your edge. Most group leaders carry out at least one study every month. I was not enthusiastic about leading this study. I had been out of practice since February 2013 and was very rusty. But after some deliberation, and because Marty was a good friend, I said OK. I was then committed. We had to do it right. At 6:00 AM the next morning, Marty, the Project Manager, the Engineer in Australia, and I had a conference call. We had a thorough discussion and went over the drawings together as best we could. I said, "Yes, I understand."

At 6:30 AM the following morning I drove to the Project Office to get ready to conduct the study. Again we had an early morning call between the Australian Engineer and me. After going over the drawings once more, he told me that my understanding was good. The study attendees (primarily plant engineers involved with the project) filed into the room and took their places around the table. After the introduction of personnel, I began the process of describing the project. While I talked, I used a laser pointer to highlight details projected on the screen. Once everyone understood the layout, we started the review process. Since I was so out of practice it was a little bumpy getting going. But the Project Manager was a good guy. He helped me get everyone in line. It was going smoother and getting better all the time. At the end, the study was done properly with great team work. We all pitched in and everyone supported me. And the day was saved for Marty.

Contract and Communication Policies

Since I am an American temporarily working in Saudi Arabia I will have to make some

adjustments so that we have speedy and easy communication. During our project, I

can be available any day of the week as long as I know when the call will be. (Friday is

my preferable day for calls.)

My city in Saudi is seven hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time and since I am working

at a regular job, I prefer that you call me at home which would be convenient for me if

you could call from around 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM Eastern Standard Time. If you like you

could send an e-mail to make an appointment and communicate by Skype.

Discussing the Project and Questionnaire

In order to get moving with the project you have in mind, I will send you a Discovery

Questionnaire so that we can clarify the project scope and do it in a manner so as to

cut down on any wasted hours. Since the best way to do a Discovery Questionnaire is

with Google Docs, I will be sending you the link. As soon as you complete the

Questionnaire and send it back to me, I will prepare a brief road map showing the way

forward. I will review your answers, explanations and your understanding as to where

additional research would be needed. This will enable us to clear up any vague areas.

Once you send me the Discovery Questionnaire and I have reviewed it within a week,

we will schedule a 30-minute launch call. You can highlight any new thoughts you have.

Following the call, I will send you an agreement so that we can get started.

Investment and Getting Started

The agreement we will work out will be thorough enough that we both understand

what is required. We will make sure that the project deadlines are clearly specified. Do

keep in mind that I require 50% of the project total before I start and to make this easy

Research is an area where I stand out. I see my strength as being a person who takes

Collaboration

I find that every client has their own way of working. Some clients want me to keep

them continuously informed as we move through the writing. Other clients want me to

carry on to the first draft without writing or calling me.

What do you prefer?

We need to work well together, please let me know and I will adjust to the way that

fits for you. In order to keep communications most effective, I find it necessary to work

with a single point of contact, I need you to agree and advise me who it is that I will be

working with.

Another thing, I generally use Google Docs as my writing tool and I would encourage

you to do the same. It is a word processing tool which allows us to track changes, as

well as comments and do it all in real time. It can be shared with your organizations

team members and most importantly the working document is always the current

document. This is very important when we are working at such great distances.

Review of First Drafts

Usually you will have the first draft within two weeks or maybe a few days less,

depending upon the size and the scope.

Please give due consideration to the first draft and review it carefully in order as to

move the writing along. I have worked with some reviewers who do not want to start

the review until they get the finished product but this can result in a tremendous

waste of time, hence, schedule slippage. We need to make sure we are in alignment

right from the first draft. We can fine-tune in the later drafts, as required.

Revisions

After you have gone over the initial draft, it is most probable that you will want some

changes. Please note that because of the comment feature this is one of the

advantages of using Google Docs. We can also use the Edit Mode feature, which I will

turn on when I send you the document.

I will review all your suggested changes in one day of their receipt by me. This will

enable me to make all the adjustments in 4 days or less, of course, this depends upon

how complicated the suggested changes are.

I will respect the fact that we are dealing with your customers and will do it as you

suggest as much as possible. There may be times when your clients make suggestions

that, quite frankly, will not work and then we need to gently steer them away from

what they want to do.

Additional Reviews

After the initial changes we will almost always find that some additional sprucing up is

needed. You know that I will help you and work with you until you are very pleased

with what we have accomplished. We will work as fast as possible so that you can have

your final copy within 3 business days.

Once all revisions have been included, I will submit the final draft to you. At this point,

it is anticipated that you will communicate with me and inform me that everything is

In most cases, the final copy is sent to a designer for formatting. I recommend that you

send me a PDF of the final version for me to double-check that any graphical elements

added by your design team are appropriate and make it more rather than less

effective.

If we notice something that is distractive and which will hurt your response rates then I

will make sure that you are told. If this requires further work with your design team

then this is absolutely OK.

Follow-Up Consultation

Once the project is finished, I will give you a complimentary follow-up consultation. We

Background

Piping and the associated underpinning are very important to the operation of any

Industry. While typically the designer will place the ambient temperature piping on

steel structures or underpinning there are instances in which more sophisticated

approaches are needed. These instances include situations in which we have expansion

due to temperature extremes or when flanged up to a fan or similar equipment in

which the connecting flange cannot be over stressed, thus we have need for restrained

effort hydraulic underpinning. There are other situations in which the pipe’s position

should be kept within certain bounds even though some portions are moving and for

this we have the triangle brace, the tupelo binder and the complex brace.

In every case, except for the simplest of designs, the piping engineer should use a

piping analysis and design program such as SPEEDO to carry out computerized stress

analysis which will provide load and travel data at the various supporting locations.

Until the last few years, the engineer would then process this data by using graphs and

charts published by the support manufacturer so as to make the correct hanger or

restraint selection. But the days of the engineer taking time to hand calculate are gone

and the situation is not satisfactory even when a simple computer program is available

to assist. An appropriate and powerful software for complete sizing and designing of

the support equipment is a ‘must have’ tool for all modern thinking, cost efficient

businesses.

This is How We Designed

The DULUTH TECHNOLOGY leadership tasked a team of people to work apart from

corporate direction to find out what was needed in a proper and effective pipe support

layout tool without the usual bureaucratic, managerial interference. In order to

conduct appropriate and independent background research, DULUTH TECHNOLOGY

selected experienced specialists to see what their essential and preferential functional

enhancements would be for a ‘top of the line’ tool. It was understood that this

directive would most likely result in a complete replacement of DULUTH

TECHNOLOGY’s current underpinning selection program

Introduction:

DULUTH TECHNOLOGY embarked on a project to modernize their underpinning design

software, Harvey Antioch Designer in June 2017. After internal and external

discussions, it was agreed that a complete rewrite was necessary.

During the process of producing a specification for the new version of the software it

was first necessary to define what the current versions did and how it was structured.

Enhancements in the new system could then be easily defined and planned.

It was also an opportunity to speak with many of the community of users of the

DULUTH TECHNOLOGY current version of the software in order to identify essential

and ‘nice to have’ functional enhancements.

It was intended that the new version of the software would have a fresh, modern

appearance and demonstrate the same UI functionality and features compatible with

current versions of Lotus 123’s operating system.

Parts libraries were to be stored in external databases that would be accessible by

DULUTH TECHNOLOGY to enable maintenance and expansion.

The pricing module will be handled in another database that can be activated by

password and will be time dependent to allow tighter control of the price/frame type

agreements. This too will be managed by DULUTH TECHNOLOGY.

The core program will be written and managed by a 1st party.

Interfaces to 1st party 2D facility modelling software will be written and managed by

either the owner of the proprietary software or their appointed developers.

This will remove the onus on DULUTH TECHNOLOGY to provide internal resource

necessary to support the program from a maintenance and upgrade perspective.

Functionality and Enhancements:

enabling the user to see the effects of the change.

Hanger viability will be reported and when component clashes within the hanger

occur, on-screen warnings will be given.

The range of the product will be expanded to include the new dynamic restraint

catalogue, heated pipe shoes, pre-insulated pipe shoes for hot applications and

selection of the hardware catalogue of Bill White Technology Inc. (US Sister Company).

Hanger configurations will be enhanced to allow vertical, horizontal and angular

specifications where appropriate.

Additional visual enhancements will be implemented in the form of-

Under the normal requirements of use, such as Harvey Antioch Designer being used by

(However, it is not backwards compatible with BAR or Support Modeler. It will be compatible with E3D version 2, the successor to XLSE but that interface is still in construction.)

4. We are also in discussions with Mercedes Systems to have them produce an

interface to Open Plant, their competitor to Foxfire 2’s Duplex Solutions.

5. Because the support must ultimately fit the piping /structure configuration, there are times when the backup arrangement has multiple hanger components. Rather than addressing this arrangement as a series of independent layouts and associated calculations, Harvey Antioch Designer does it in a unified manner. At the end of the day, the engineer will get a design which efficiently fits the required configuration but also one in which the materials are appropriate and the various components are correctly sized.

6. Since space is always at a premium, it is necessary that plants be laid out

efficiently and compactly which, of course, dramatically affects piping layout. As much as possible, this means that the hanger or the supporting hydraulic needs to fit the layout rather than the layout needs to be adjusted for the hanger. Hence, Harvey Antioch Designer checks that the hanger will fit into the available space and if not provide guidance on what is required.

7. XLSE and other plant design models give a virtual reality look into how the plant would look on a walk through. The Harvey Antioch Designer does the same. It facilitates instant and detailed visualization of each part of the hanger and clarifies how the whole assembly fits together.

8. The Harvey Antioch Designer Pipe Support software enables the hanger to quickly be recreated in the 3-dimensional, plant model. It arranges the components to fit together precisely so that there is no question about completeness and accuracy.

9. Simultaneously with the development of the model the Harvey Antioch Designer

software produces fully completed shop drawings for the hanger manufacturer and General Arrangement drawings for the installation contractor. Since these drawings are done fully, accurately and unilaterally by the INDUSTRIES there is no wasted time by manufacturer’s review.

10. Harvey Antioch Designer has been planned so that it will provide detailed and

consolidated parts listings for inventory management and material provision. This will ensure that all long-lead parts are purchased/manufactured on schedule (if any) are identified early on.

commercial department to see instantly the cost of individual hanger components, hangers or complete hanger systems. The commercial department can depend upon having been given absolute and transparent cost data.

Petrochemical Plants are often filled with highly flammable or toxic fluids. We know

All of us in the piping business need to work together to prevent accidents so where do

piping problems begin? Many piping problems are associated with deterioration due to

corrosion, either on the supports or directly on the pipe, and a very practical way to

reduce corrosion is to start with proper designs, followed up with correct installation

and verified with periodic physical checking. You can count on HECLA to support you.

We Use Proper Designs to Reduce Failures

Piping designs in most of the petrochemical plants will be in accordance with ASME

B31.3 Process Piping. In ASME B31.3 there is a referenced component standard for

pipe supports in Table 326.1 which is MSS-SP-58, Pipe Hangers and Supports-Materials,

Design and Manufacture. Piping supports per this standard are acceptable for ASME

B31.3 piping systems. You should know that HECLA closely follows MSS-SP-58 in the

design of our supports.

In his book entitled, Process Piping, The Complete Guide to ASME B31.3, Charles Becht

IV, refers to Section 321 of ASME B31.3 which discusses the types of loads that must be

considered in supporting the piping. Becht lists out some complications which must be

considered in layout and design of piping and the supporting elements. He specifically

mentions that the design shall be directed toward preventing the following:

a. Piping stresses in excess of those permitted in ASME B31.3;

b. Leakage at joints;

c. Excessive thrusts and moments on connected equipment (such as pumps and

turbines);

d. Excessive stresses in the supporting (or restraining) elements;

e. Excessive interference with thermal expansion and contraction in piping which is

otherwise flexible;

f. Unintentional disengagement of piping from its supports;

Ensure the Supports are Properly Installed

HECLA will leave the overall design of the pipe supports to CONGLOMERATE’s capable

Design Engineers but we think it wise that we help with the installation. One thing we

have observed is that, even though spring supports have been around a long time,

most commonly, their function and operation is not well understood. We know this by

seeing the results of confused and mistaken installations, even to the extreme case of

finding variable springs in service with the blocks having been left in place for years. So

there is a definite need for experienced and specialized people to install supports.

Regular visual inspection of the entire piping system is essential and particular

entrees on skewers so that you can dip into the yoghurt sauce. Served with a

steaming hot jacket potato so that it really is a balanced, medium sized meal.

● Grilled Hamour, Hamour is the name of a variety of closely related fish species in

the Arabian Gulf. Try it and you will find that the hamour is a very tasty fish and

you will know why it is enjoyed by so many who have lived in this area for any

length of time.
