Dates to remember … Monday 5 June - Queen’s Birthday Friday 9 June - Malvern Cross Country Monday 12 June - Canterbury Gymnascs Monday 12 June - ‘Wizard of Oz’ performance at Darfield High School Friday 7 July - End of Term 2 Weekly Jokes! Q: What do you call a belt with a watch on it? A: A waist of me! GLENTUNNEL SCHOOL NEWSLETTER Friday 2 June 2017 Tena koutou katoa parents and caregivers, Welcome to the end of Week 5 and the half way point of the term. Our guitar and ukulele lessons with Helen are going great and the students are really enjoying this opportunity. Thanks to Helen for joining our school community and allowing our students to have this experience. Because both the guitar and ukulele lessons have been so popular they are now full, and we can’t take any more students at the moment. They will run to the end of Term 3 and if space becomes available we will let everyone know. We have booked in our senior (Year 4 - 6 Students) Ski Days at Mt Hu Ski Field for 2017. The dates are the 25 th of August and the 1 st , 8 th and 15 th of September. You can now find the dates on the school calendar, which you can access from the school app and website. We will need a lot of support from parents and other community members to transport everyone to the mountain and maintain student’s safety and well-being. Please look ahead and pencil in any of these dates if you are able to help. As well as helping our students have an amazing experience and learn new skills you too will also enjoy a wonderful day on the mountain. Adult helpers receive a very good discounted rate to ski or snowboard. I will be sending a skiing form home to all Year 4 – 6 students and their parents near the end of this term to gather feedback on helper’s availability. Late last year Glentunnel School along with the other contribung schools ceased their involvement in leasing the endowment forestry plot of land in Coalgate. This was because of health and safety concerns, ongoing costs and non-involvement in the plot as it was originally intended. The school received $20,000 at the end of this process and the board would like this money to go towards creang something special for the school and the students. We would like to do something with the money that creates a legacy for future students, is funconal and has long term benefits for our students. To give you some idea of the kind of projects we are thinking about here are three the staff had thought of. 1. Extend the decking outside Room 3 and the toilet block to create a covered outdoor learning space. 2. A shade sail to cover the grass area outside the school office in terms 4 and 1. This would be an outdoor learning space as well as eang space at break mes. 3. To install slide down plasc barriers along the veranda outside Room 1 and 2. This would be to stop the wind and weather while also creang usable outdoor learning spaces.

GLENTUNNEL SCHOOL NEWSLETTER Friday 2 June 2017

Tena koutou katoa parents and caregivers, Welcome to the end of Week 5 and the half way point of the term. Our guitar and ukulele lessons with Helen are going great and the students are really enjoying this opportunity. Thanks to Helen for joining our school community and allowing our students to have this

experience. Because both the guitar and ukulele lessons have been so popular they are now full, and we can’t take any more students at the moment. They will run to the end of Term 3 and if space becomes available we will let everyone know. We have booked in our senior (Year 4 - 6 Students) Ski Days at Mt Hutt Ski Field for 2017. The dates are the 25th of August and the 1st, 8th and 15th of September.

Late last year Glentunnel School along with the other contributing schools ceased their involvement in leasing the endowment forestry plot of land in Coalgate. This was because of health and safety concerns, ongoing costs and non-involvement in the

plot as it was originally intended. The school received $20,000 at the end of this process and the board would like this money to go towards creating something special for the school and the students. We would like to do something with the money that creates a legacy for future students, is functional and has long term benefits for our students. To give you some idea of the kind of projects we are thinking about here are three the staff had thought of. 1. Extend the decking outside Room 3 and the toilet block to

create a covered outdoor learning space. 2. A shade sail to cover the grass area outside the school office in terms 4 and 1. This would be an outdoor learning space as well as eating space at break times. 3. To install slide down plastic barriers along the veranda outside Room 1 and 2. This would be to stop the wind and weather while also creating usable outdoor learning spaces.

  • If you like any of these ideas or have a different idea you would like to share please email/write to Alison. We will also be asking the students their ideas on what we could do with this money. As part of this process we are very interested in hearing about who was involved in the planting at the endowment plot and/or was involved in the forestry plot in the past. Please email/write to Alison if you have a story or information to share.

Next Friday we have 24 students heading to the Malvern Cross Country Event. It’s fantastic to have a lot of parents coming along to support these students on the day. If you are not helping with transport and your child needs a car seat/booster seat than please bring it to school on the day. If you have replied with yes to transport can you please meet Mr S at school at 10 am so we can be on the road at

no later than 10:10 am. Special thanks to Joanna Hunt, Jade Lee and Marion Oeberg who will be a ‘Tail End Charlie’ for one of the races. Remember your running shoes and warm clothing! Kind regards Dion Stechmann
