Slithering Operation on Board MT ‘Guru Gobind Singh’The entire slithering operation (anti piracy exercise) was carried out in a very professional and satisfactory manner on board our vessel mt ‘Guru Gobind Singh’ at the Gulf Of Aden by Indian Naval Warship ‘INS Tabar’ in February 2010 between 1100 hrs and 1345 hrs (UTC). The ship’s staff were much inspired by the action of nine MARCOs (Marine Commandos) and a naval helicopter, and during the exercise, they learnt many lessons with regard to precautions to be taken in case of any piracy attack and subsequent co-ordination with the naval forces.

Dear Colleagues,

During the year 2011, SCI family has achieved the milestone of50 years of dedicated service to the nation, and after commemoratingthe opening function at New Delhi on October 2, 2010, which wasattended by Her Excellency President of India, Smt. Pratibha DevisinghPatil, the valedictory function was held at Mumbai on October 1, 2011,which was attended by Hon'ble Prime Minister of India, Dr. ManmohanSingh. The occasion of completing 50 years by SCI was also celebratedat Kolkata on January 5, 2012.

As we all are aware, the Shipping Industry is presently going througha lean phase due to slowdown in international trade. Since the onsetof downward phase from mid 2008, the freight rates are abysmallylow in almost all the segments except offshore, and it is expectedthat this phase is likely to continue at least upto 2012 end.

The year 2011 witnessed some natural disasters in the form ofearthquakes, flooding and tsunami in the major economies whichfurther caused the global trade to take a downturn. In addition to theslowdown in the international trade coupled with oversupply oftonnage, the increasing bunker price has been a major cause affectingthe performance of the shipping industry. As a matter of fact, it is theexcessive supply of vessels, almost in each segment, which iscausing considerable tumbling in the freight indices and is stillcontinuing to add to the miseries of the shipping industry. The BDI(Baltic Dry Index) which is considered to be the benchmark index forthe seaborne trade, dropped significantly during the year 2011. Onthe global front, the Euro crisis and slowdown in US economypossessed further hurdles for revival of global economy. It can onlybe hoped that if with severe fiscal discipline, the Euro zone economiesstabilise to some extent and if US economy shows some growth, then the situation in 2013 can improve for the better for ShippingIndustry.

I would like to conclude by quoting the saying "Not only strike the ironwhen it is hot, but make it hot by striking". We have achieved thismilestone of successfully entering into 51st year by sheer uphillstruggle of our dedicated personnel on board and off shore over theyears, in favorable as well as unfavorable circumstances. I havefirm belief in my SCI Team that it will rise up to the occasion against allodds of current scenario and come out with flying colours. I wouldlike to appeal the members of the SCI family to re-dedicate themselvesfurther to the cause of this esteemed national organization in theyears ahead with a renewed zeal so that SCI will emerge as aleading player in the maritime world.
