BHL-SciELO Network and Information Sources

• BHL Brazil: scanned 385 works within gBHL, including books about Brazilian fauna and flora, and national scientific journals => will include around 2.000 scanned works from the Brazilian Institutions

• BHL Global: 113.117 works – journals and books – which integrate the biodiversity global network of libraries (gBHL)

• Portal of Biodiversity Journals: 38 scientific journals published in 5 countries of SciELO Network

• Legislation: updated collection of national 69 laws and international treaties,

• BIOTA/FAPESP Repository: constituted by the bibliographic metadata of 547 scientific articles of BIOTA/FAPESP Program

• ThesBio: multilingual hierarchic tool with 5.128 biodiversity terms and 3.704 scope notes in Portuguese, English and Spanish languages

• Communication: news, blog, twitter

• List of Species

Achievements and Challenges of Last Year

• 585 scanned works which sum 144.462 pages of books and scientific journals, according to BHL Methodology

• Assembly of 4 scanning centers:

Zoology Museum of the University of São Paulo Butantan Institute Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden - in regular operation Emilio Goeldi Museum - in regular operation

• Completion of digitization activities at the Butantan Institute

• Completion of the development of a program for the conversion of scanned books metadata to Marc 21 XML and the start of the test phase

Future Plans

• Development of a program for the conversion of scanned journals metadata to Marc 21 XML

• Provision of the first digitized works (books) on the Internet Archives

• Assembly of two other scanning centers

Conclusions on SciELO-BHL development

• Bureaucratic barriers - slow but sustainable process

• Political support - aligned with national policies--- critical to get institutional and financial support

• Scientific support - aligned with research programs--- critical to get research community support

• Based on existing national and international successful experiences: BHL, SciELO and VHL

• Network rationality, open access, public good
