Background, Work Plan, Methodology & Evolution

To begin with, TiEQuest is taken as model BVC (Business Venture Competition) or Benchmark that attempts to integrate mentoring and investment flows over an intense 6-month long program, now running into the sixth year since it commenced at Toronto in 2005.

This BVC Handbook to serve as global template to revitalize and supercharge future TiEQuest curriculum at Toronto as well as all interested TiE Chapters participating at the local level. TiE Toronto will support the endeavor of other participating Chapters and collaborate with them anticipating to learn new practices emerging. Ultimate objective is to serve the best interest of entire TiE Ecosystem and empower aspiring next generation entrepreneurs worldwide. Following local BVC, participating Chapters may consider sending winning teams to Toronto for bigger competition or additional exposure.

Now, such a move entails well structured guideline, work plan, methodology that benefits the entire TiE network. This Handbook develops further on the existing TiEQuest collaterals to delineate a generic work plan that becomes a ready “launch pad”. The Handbook will continue to evolve, capturing best practices from other major competitions across TiE World (TiE50, Kaun Banega Entrepreneur, ISB-Connect, etc.).

This Handbook has been reviewed by TiEQuest organizers and finally vetted by the Expert Resource Team comprising dedicated members from Stanford and UC Berkeley Universities (see section on Recommendations for Improvement & Future Positioning). Finally, the Handbook will be placed in the Resource Center section of www.tie.org and is subjected to continuous improvement drawing on user feedback. The existing www.tiequest.org will be yet another repository of online resources along with this Handbook to power global business venture competition across TiE network. As work plan and methodology evolves beginning from Phase I (2010-11), the following will be attempted:

Making available third party software (Kauffman Foundation ISmart, etc.) catalyzing process driven BVC to interested Chapters.

Integrating BVC with the global network of mentors in TiE ecosystem facilitated by the Remote Mentoring platform would be yet another initiative.

Winners of TiEQuest and similar BV contests across TiE network shall be encouraged to post their Business Plan Summary for connecting with Investors and Mentors worldwide.

Develop virtual community of mentors, investors, judges to work with BVC winners and stakeholders. Engage leading Chapters like Toronto, Silicon Valley, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Boston, Delhi, Mumbai, London and others interested to actively participate in this online community.

Include learnings from TiEQuest and other similar programs captured in the Handbook as a separate Chapter in Entrepreneurship Best Practices Guide to be brought out towards end of 2010.

Engage multiple Chapters, TiE Global communication packages, Annual Report, website, high profile partners and sponsors to champion BVC curriculum worldwide. BSchools, Academia, Investment firms, VCs, angel community, leading entrepreneurs, mentors and domain experts to evangelize BVC outreach. Hold Global Competition amongst all Business Plan winners within TiE ecosystem to attract investors and mentors with global standing. Explore synching with Global TYE model.

Make this an ongoing affair with need-based work plan update to ensure constant improvements with the support and involvement of TiE’s proliferating network.

The Mentors

What makes TiEQuest different from any other competition is the mentoring expertise offered to the participating entrepreneurs. All contestants who qualify after Project Profile stage are offered mentoring. Panel of mentors comprise successful entrepreneurs, senior professionals in law, accounting and other business leaders offering a host of new venture services. Many of these mentors are TiE Charter Members, who are committed to devote time to guide entrepreneurs. The mentors also offer criticism to the projects with the aim to accelerate growth in a balanced manner and mitigate risk factors. Many of the mentors are very often ready to open their rolodex to help entrepreneurs where they need it. See list of Mentors along with Judges in the later part of this section to get a flavor of expertise and strength brought in by the mentoring pool at Toronto (a process that can be replicated by other TiE Chapters).

Mentoring Workshop All successful contestants will be invited to a mentoring workshop at a downtown Toronto venue (this is a crucial attribute of TiEQuest BVC and all participating Chapters need to dedicate Mentors and additional resources for such workshops and Mentoring support. Purpose of this workshop is to guide the contestants to improve on their venture. Many judges participate in the workshop, which includes:

Presentations by past winners

Discussions regarding the progress of your venture with mentors

Obtain guidance for any questions you may have

Opportunity to speak with Judges

Participants Speak……………………what past contestants say about the complete TiEQuest experience

“Since TiEQuest, Skymeter started to attract the interest of larger integrators in the road pricing business and we raised $1,800,000 financing to date” – Kamal Hassan of Skymeter Corporation

“The TiEQuest experience is something that I absolutely must recommend to any entrepreneur, who is serious about starting a business. As a result of TiEQuest, Chide.it has formed many strategic partnerships, received invaluable feedback with regards to its business plan and gotten funding. Since TiEQuest, Chide.it has grown 4 to 12 team members and from no revenue to multiple streams of revenue.” – Aydin Mirzaee of Chide.it Inc.

“The TiE network has been an incredible resource for CognoVision, and the mentorship and guidance we have been given has been priceless. TiEQuest proved to be an invaluable experience for CognoVision. Embarking on the journey helped us articulate our business plan and strategy, and provided us with constructive feedback from an accomplished panel of judges as we progressed through the various stages of the competition. When CognoVision entered TiEQuest, we were a pre-revenue company. After TiEQuest, we became privately funded, built our first commercial solution, and went to market in 2008.” – Haroon Mirza of Cognovision Solutions Inc.

"It was a great experience. The most helpful part was the mentorship. Our mentor provided us some great ideas. Our advice to future participants is to be open with the judges. If you don‟t know something then say so and benefit from their advice." - Danny Wang, Weblish

"Having a mentor in TiEQuest Competition take a bit of pressure off you. The competition was quite substantive and real. TiEQuest is really a mentorship and education process. It educates budding entrepreneurs get through the process which is solely lacking in the venture world" - David Yorke and Glyn Evans, 2010 Contestant

“After winning in TiEQuest, CertoLabs has raised over $500,000 of funding. The Company is currently negotiating with investors to expedite the commercialization process.” – Ameer Taha of CertoLabs Inc. Winner of TiEQuest 2006

"We have really come to appreciate what TiEQuest has to offer. The greatest bonus to us was meeting a lot of judges, who were experts in various industries, very well connected professionals and just meeting the calibre of judges and mentors and even some of the participants was a great boost for us. There are two main ways the judges and mentors and the whole mentoring process helped us: One is that they gave us a deadline to produce content, which is a great way to focus. Having set deadlines by which the business plan needed to be ready helped us. Second was the judges gave us fresh perspective. Being a tech company we were caught up on the technology side. Mathews background is in computers and my background is in

commercializing technology and suddenly we were thrust into a world of people who understand the technology but their main question was ”Show me where the money is and how do you make money?”. Although we thought of it but before tiequest we never had to crystallize it into a very focused message. So the greatest message from the judges and mentors was “How is your technology help make me money?”. As regards the competition itself, TiEQuest has been a very professionally run business competition. In a way it put us in touch with lot of professionals instead of technical people." -Jad Yaghi and Mathew Sloly, Verold Inc., Winner of TiEQuest 2010

“Various prizes received in TiEQuest helped us tremendously to raise new money and guide us through hurdles during our commercialization efforts. As a result, we are well on our way to commercialize our newly developed technology, despite the challenging market conditions. Liquid Fiber Displays has so far received over $250,000 of financing and grants. We are currently negotiating about $7 million of venture funding. We are confident of raising this financing due to network of investors following our winning TiEQuest – Nimesh Bahl of Liquid Fiber Displays Inc. Winner of TiEQuest 2008

“After participating in TiEQuest in 2007, we have received a contract to provide trunk main leak detection service in UK , obtained LeakfinderRT orders from China and established a stronger position in the $40 trillion global infrastructural makeover. We have built numerous contacts in advancing our business. In-Kind prizes have been very valuable. We are using their help in marketing for the Upcoming show ACE 2007. They think the venture has tremendous potential and are working with us for marketing the company at that event. Going forward we intend to work with them to review and formalize a complete marketing strategy.”” – Marc Bracken of Echologics Engineering Inc. Winner of TiEQuest 2007

“After participating in TiEQuest 2007, Artenga has completed successful therapeutic animal testing, was named one of Canada‟s Top 10 Life Science Companies and has completed its third generation device.” – James Keenan of Artenga Inc.

“The TiEQuest prizes helped to fund the move to market and to introduce our Company to investors in clean technology. Our natural fertilizers are now in the golf course and residential lawns markets in Ontario , thanks to the exposure and financial „kick‟ received by participating in the TiEQuest program.” – Don Carr of Bio Balance Corporation

“Friday the 13th proved lucky for Echologics. The company not only won $50,000 in cash plus the lion‟s share of $83,000 in other prizes it also gets the opportunity to sit down with two venture capital companies, which have already expressed a willingness to invest up to $1 million in the winner to help take it to that next crucial stage in development.” – National Post, April 23, 2007

“The TiEQuest Competition was an incredible experience. Since early-stage and startup ventures usually start with “who you know,” and TiEQuest is a rare opportunity to network with the business community elite, present your plan to more than one investor at once, and get advice from among the best entrepreneurs and investors in Canada . Not only were the advisors and judges extremely supportive, but their feedback was honest and thorough. We were the first runner up for TiEQuest from among 187 participating teams and that was a big validation for all the time and effort we've put into the business. We are very thankful to TiEQuest for the $25,000 cash prize, in-kind prizes, and the investment interest from BCE Capital. We are confident that with all the new contacts we made, there will be opportunities to approach and get interest from more investors.” – Mayukh Gon of XeQure Solutions Inc.

“Since winning TiEQuest 2005, a lot has happened for (our company). We were able to use the (prize money) to complete development of the product, as well progress in some high-level talks with (our potential customers) in Canada . The success at TiEQuest garnered a lot of attention from media, and articles were published in the Toronto Star as well as some other publications throughout North America .” – Sunny Bhasin of Gradecast, Winner of TiEQuest 2005

TiEQuest Mentoring - “We‟re connected to advisor who challenged us, helped to refine business plan and became our mentor and continues to be there for us as we progress through our entrepreneurial journey– Haroon Mirza of Cognovision Solutions Inc.

Judging Criteria

As indicated above, the primary judging criterion used in evaluating business venture is the real world question: “Would I invest in this company?” In addition, due weight is given to the following factors (this is indicative guideline and subject to modifications by Chapters though basic parameters not to vary much): Product/Service: Does the venture have sound value proposition? Have the contestants developed the product concept clearly?

Does the business concept embody innovation and creativity?

Marketability: Is the product/service marketable? Is there a demand? Is there sustainable competitive advantage?

Viability: What is the likelihood of the business plan actually becoming the basis for a viable business? Does the venture technically make sense? Could it be a real business? Will the venture be profitable? Have all the key financial considerations been taken into account in the projections? Does the return justify the investment and the risk?

Management: Is the management knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and committed to the venture? Can they execute it? Do they have a track record?

Action Plan: Are milestones real? Is the venture stable and growth oriented or speculative and risky? Does it have high sensitivity to the actions of competitors, technology, the industry, etc.? When and how will the exit likely happen? Is the strategy appropriate?

A well developed business venture with proven technology, executed partnership agreements and “beta” customers will have a higher chance of success. To protect the privacy of the information/ideas of the contestants, Judges are requested that no copies of original submissions are made and all copies submitted are returned. The contestants should note that a short description of the business venture may be used in public documentation relating to the contest.

Prostate Cancer affects >250,000 men each year in North America alone. Worryingly, many of those treated with existing surgeries subsequently suffer debilitating side-effects of impotence and incontinence.

Profound Medical Inc. (PMI) is commercializing a truly unique, minimally-invasive approach for the treatment of prostate cancer, combining the already proven clinical efficacy of ultrasound thermal therapy with the unparalleled imaging capabilities of MRI. Our prototype has seamlessly integrated these two technologies into a system that could provide an unmatched level of speed, precision and accuracy in the treatment of the whole prostate, or targeted regions of the prostate. In just 18 months since foundation, the company has advanced from research prototype to a clinical system, has agreed a clinical plan with regulatory bodies, and is now finalizing partnering agreements with a major MRI vendor and several notable healthcare institutions to start clinical trials.

Shiny Ads is an advertising technology company focused on helping online publishers maximize revenue from advertisers of all sizes. Our Self-Serve Advertising platform allows publishers to control the ad purchase process by directly offering an ad purchase system to their advertisers. It allows small and local (long-tail) advertisers to quickly and easily purchase advertising without the need of special knowledge of industry terminology, graphic designers, or a large budget. Through our patent-pending automated advertising management back-end process, payment is reconciled, banners are inserted into the publisher's ad server, advertiser's campaigns are monitored, and publishers are paid nightly. Typically online publishers ignore small and local advertisers as it costs more to service their needs than the revenue they generate. Long-tail advertisers are accustomed to quick-and-easy advertising options and only have a small budget to work with. The team behind Shiny Ads understood this dilemma having worked both in the online publishing and online advertising and marketing worlds.

Verold Inc. is a Canadian startup, with an R&D lab at one of the top German Computer Vision universities, that is in the process of commercializing a set of software tools and processes that reduce the time to create ready-to-animate 3D content for media consumption, such as games, web-content, Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/VR) worlds and film, by up to 80%. This is achieved through a non-liner content production work-flow that automates or partially automates many of the tedious labor-intensive processes involved in producing 3D content.

Verold‟s mission is to make it easy, quick and inexpensive to create 3D content formedia consumption, by both professionals and amateurs, and in the long term, to provide them with a means to create their own virtual and augmented reality worlds and games.
