PROJECT GOAL – Perform cleft lip and palate surgeries on up to 50 children per week, while training in-county professionals to continue

treatment throughout the year; with the goal of developing fully-staffed multi-disciplinary cleft lip and palate clinics.

DURATION OF PROJECT: Each project site will be one week, with surgeries performed for five days each week.

Project Sites in Merida and Chetumal, Mexico

Global Grant

• The proposed activity is to provide professional vocational training teams. The teams (composed of volunteer U.S. medical personnel recruited by SHARES and local medical professionals) will screen patients and perform surgeries on up to 50 children per week with cleft lip and/or palates.

• We will help develop each of the disciplines that are required in a cleft lip and palate clinic. The disciplines include plastic surgery, speech therapy, pediatric anesthesiology, pediatric recovery room nursing and operating room nursing.

• Our long-term goal is to promote multi-disciplinary cleft lip and palate clinics, which will continue year round. These clinics will not only perform the initial surgery on each child, but continue follow-up care and services, which may include additional surgery, speech therapy, nutritionist, dentist, social worker, psychologist, and orthodontist specialties.

Global Grant

• SHARES International has committed to continue these vocational training trips for a minimum of an additional three years to each of these sites. SHARES will recruit experienced volunteer medical professionals to work alongside and train local surgical and medical professionals, and teach the latest medical techniques. This continued training will ensure sustainability by developing multi-disciplinary, year-round care for these cleft lip and palate patients. SHARES has a 18-year track record in Mexico of making and keeping long-term commitments to improve maternal and child health.

Rotarian Michelle Gross, our SHARES Program Officer/Liaison, will maintain the medical records and work with the Secretary of Health and DIF (social services agency) to accurately monitor, evaluate and report on maternal and child health measures, such as:

• number of children receiving medical treatment• number of child health professionals trained• number of communities that report decreased mortality/morbidity rates of children• number of benefiting health facilities
