Costs and inclusions

Tentative Itinerary

The program will cost a maximum of AUD$4,300. As all GLP trips run at cost price the price may be lower than this, depending on the number of students attending; however, you should budget for the program to cost this amount. Likewise, in the event of the exchange rate fluctuating to the point that the cost exceeds AUD$4,300, or we do not have the student numbers to cover the cost, the trip may be cancelled. In this event, all deposits will be reimbursed. You will be updated on the final price after the deposit deadline.*

The program fee includes:• company visits• three nights in triple rooms at a three-star hotel in São Paulo• four nights in twin rooms at a four-star hotel in Manaus• four nights in triple rooms at a three-star hotel in Rio de Janeiro• all breakfasts, lunches and dinner • welcome and farewell dinner• private transportation during all scheduled activities• bilingual Brazilian guide• domestic flights: from São Paulo to Manaus and from Manaus to

Rio de Janeiro• transfer in and out of airports for all flights (domestic and

international)• tourist activities in Manaus: city tour, swimming with dolphins,

trail walks etc.• city tour in São Paulo• tourist activities in Rio de Janeiro: Christ the Redeemer,

The program fee excludes:• international flights to and from Brazil• comprehensive travel insurance (usually around AUD$200)• personal expenses (laundry, mini bar, gifts etc.)• vaccinations and medications required for travel to Brazil• services not mentioned on this document• any optional activities you may want to take part in• Brazilian visa.

TUESDAY 23 SEPTEMBER Arrive in São Paulo. Transfer from the airport to the hotel in a private bus. Hotel check-in São Paulo. Arrival orientation at the hotel. Welcome dinner at a traditional Brazilian steakhouse. (D)

WEDNESDAY 24 SEPTEMBER Visit to Natura, the largest cosmetic company in Brazil. Lunch followed by two lectures at a local university. Visit to ESPM Jr. (Escola Superior de Propaganda e Marketing Jr.), a marketing consulting company run by students of EPSM. Dinner and optional soccer match. (B, L, D)

THURSDAY 25 SEPTEMBER Walking tour through São Paulo’s historical downtown. Visit to Austrade, the Australian government’s trade and investment development agency, followed by lunch. Visit to BRAiN, a major Brazilian investment and business hub. Dinner and night out at Grazie a Dio with live music. (B, L, D)

FRIDAY 26 SEPTEMBER Transfer by private bus to São Paulo airport for flight to Manaus. Transfer to hotel in a private bus and hotel check-in Manaus. Lunch time followed by bus tour of historical downtown of Manaus. Dinner and night out. (B, L, D)

SATURDAY 27 SEPTEMBER Tourism activity: jungle experience followed by lunch on an Amazon riverboat, then that afternoon, swimming with dolphins, followed by dinner and a night out. (B, L, D)

SUNDAY 28 SEPTEMBER Tourism activity: follow a jungle trail inside the Amazon followed by lunch and a trek through the rainforest to a waterfall. Dinner and night out. (B, L, D)

MONDAY 29 SEPTEMBER Lecture at a local university, followed by a visit to SUFRAMA, an office linked to the Brazilian Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade, that manages the Manaus Free Trade Zone. Dinner and a night out. (B, L, D)

TUESDAY 30 SEPTEMBER Visit to Fundacao Vitoria Amazonica, an Amazon socio-environmental organisation. Hotel check out. Transfer by private bus to Manaus airport for flight to Rio de Janeiro. Transfer in a private bus to the hotel followed by dinner and a night out at OO, a nightclub in Gavea. (B, L, D)

WEDNESDAY 1 OCTOBER Welcome orientation session followed by a visit to the offices of Globo TV International; the largest media conglomerate in Latin America (and the

fifth largest in the world), then lunch and a visit to Ilha Pura – the Olympic Village for Rio 2016. Dinner and a night out in Ipanema. (B, L, D)

THURSDAY 2 OCTOBER Visit to Projeto Gente; an innovative school in Rocinha favela. Lunch followed by a visit to Sugarloaf Mountain and the iconic statue, Christ the Redeemer. Dinner and a night out at Rio Scenarium, considered one of the top ten bars in the world, according to The Guardian. (B, L, D)

FRIDAY 3 OCTOBER After lunch, take the afternoon off to enjoy your free time or do some optional activities such as Tijuca National Park walking trails, bike tours, or go to the beach. Farewell dinner at a traditional Brazilian restaurant. (B, L, D)

SATURDAY 4 OCTOBER A walking tour in Cantagalo favela led by local guides. Morning off to enjoy the beach. Hotel check out. Lunch, then transfer by private bus to Rio de Janeiro airport for return flight to Australia. (B, L)

N.B. Itinerary may be subject to change. An experienced GLP staff member will accompany the trip to ensure the smooth running of activities and travel plans.

(B = breakfast, L = lunch and D = dinner) Mobility ScholarshipsAll Macquarie students fully enrolled in a degree program are eligible to apply for a Macquarie Mobility Scholarship to assist with paying for the trip. Some conditions apply. To assess your eligibility to receive a Mobility Scholarship please consult the Mobility Scholarship policy at: mq.edu.au/mobility-scholarships.  Students who meet the eligibility criteria will be able to apply for a $2000 Mobility Scholarship to assist with trip costs.

Health and safetyTravel to Brazil entails a number of health and safety considerations and vaccinations. There will be a compulsory health and safety briefing for all delegates to be held on Friday 25 July on-campus. You must be available to attend this briefing. It is each delegate’s responsibility to ensure they meet all immunisation standards as set by Macquarie University at the health and safety briefing.

Pre-departure TrainingDelegates will participate in an online pre-departure training activity to familiarise you with the issues and cultures you will encounter during the symposium. All delegates will also attend a group pre-departure training session in Sydney to meet your fellow delegates and obtain important information about the trip. You will be provided with a Symposium handbook containing a packing list and information about Brazil.

Individual projectsDelegates are required to develop an individual project that reflects their learning on a particular issue they encounter in Brazil. This project is a requirement of joining the trip and receiving a Mobility Scholarship and you will be expected to collate and submit your project soon after returning home. Delegates will be awarded certificates of participation upon completion of this work. This certificate will be the evidence you are required to submit to the Mobility Scholarship department upon your return.
