The long‐term outlook for the decaffeinated coffee industry
1
Decaffeinated coffee consumption has traditionally been dominated by older consumers and by those who have health concerns. Uptake is often due to pregnancy or health conditions that prompt doctors to recommend reduced caffeine intake. As a result, ageing populations point towards growth in the decaffeinated coffee sector.
More recently, growth in consumption has been stronger in the specialty coffee industry, where consumers have favoured the trend towards natural decaffeination methods.
Europe, and in particular, Germany, dominates green decaffeinated coffee exports, but recent years have seen growth from other suppliers, notably Vietnam and Spain. In contrast, North America is the largest importing region, followed by Europe. However, the fastest growth rates in terms of imports of green decaffeinated coffee are in Asia and South America, albeit from a low starting point.

With little publicly available data, LMC analyses a range of demand indicators to forecast consumption of decaffeinated coffee across mature and emerging economies.
Flat consumption growth for decaf coffee over the past decade means that the industry needs to look to those markets – in the emerging sector – that demonstrate the highest growth potential. Over recent years, these have included markets in Asia, South America and Africa.
LMC’s Global Markets for Decaffeinated Coffeeprovides in-depth analysis of the key issues affecting growth in an industry under pressure.
