Boosting Agricultural Production with Novel Crop Protection

Transforming Wastewater into a Usable Resource Agricultural production and food security are critical issues in the region. With the introduction of ISOCLAST™, Dow AgroSciences is helping farmers protect yields in a wide variety of crops, including soybeans, citrus, nuts, grapes and potatoes. ISOCLAST™ offers extremely effective control of many sap-feeding insects, enabling farmers to boost production and feed a growing population.

Water resources are scarce across the region. As populations grow and local economies develop, governments are looking for innovative solutions to utilize water more efficiently and intelligently. With solutions such as FILMTEC™ Reverse Osmosis elements and IntegraFlo™ ultrafiltration membrane technology, wastewater can be turned into a usable resource. In addition, these new technologies are driving energy efficiency and cost savings in municipal and industrial wastewater treatment and reuse processes.

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a scarce and expensive mineral. It’s also the world’s most widely used pigment in white and light-colored paints. Dow’s EVOQUE™ Pre-Composite Polymer Technology enables paint formulators to create new paints that use up to 20 percent less TiO2. But that’s only half of the story; this revolutionary new technology makes possible a wide range of benefits. Depending on the formulation, EVOQUE™ can improve opacity and whiteness, enhance stain resistance and removal, improve corrosion resistance and increase hiding efficiency. With Dow’s technology inside, paints now work harder and smarter.

Coatings, construction and water solutions that support the region’s growth needs.

Geographic ReachDow’s Regional Presence

United Arab Emirates

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) serves as the regional headquarters for the Middle East, Turkey and Africa and is the commercial hub for our growth strategy across the Middle East and North Africa. With two industry leading joint ventures and one manufacturing site, Dow’s solutions in construction, coatings, petrochemicals, energy and water have been used in many of the region’s iconic developments, including Dubai landmarks Burj Khalifa and Ski Dubai.

Kenya/East AfricaHome to two of the ten fastest growing economies, East Africa is an important gateway for Dow. Its agricultural and manufacturing base creates multiple opportunities in housing, infrastructure, agriculture and energy. Through Dow’s Advanced Manufacturing Plan, we have laid out a series of high-level recommendations that can help provide long-term employment growth for Kenya. Dow is also enhancing the region’s standard of living through partnerships with Habitat for Humanity and Acumen, a nonprofit organization addressing poverty across Africa and Asia.

Ghana/West AfricaEstablished in 2011, Dow’s office in Ghana is the hub for the rapidly growing West Africa region. Dow technologies are used locally to increase crop yields, improve energy efficiency, and provide stronger, more sustainable building materials. Through relationships with WaterHealth International and the Safe Water Team, Dow is heading up initiatives to address one of the area’s most critical challenges—access to safe and affordable drinking water.

KuwaitDow is utilizing its strong asset base and technology position to transform Kuwait’s petrochemical landscape. Through our four joint ventures and local office, we are the largest private employer in Kuwait’s petrochemical industry. Dow also leads local efforts to advance human progress, including youth, educational, social awareness and environmental preservation initiatives. Launched in 2011, the Dow Marine Conservation Program (DMCP) has helped clear more than 19 tons of waste from Kuwait’s beaches.

TurkeyTurkey is Dow’s fourth fastest-growing market. Operating in the country for more than 40 years, Dow now has multiple manufacturing sites producing STYROFOAM™, polyurethanes and raw materials for paint and plastic additives. Three of Dow’s joint ventures are based in Turkey: DowAksa, DowPolisan and Mardav. Dow is active in developing environmental and economic standards in Turkey via technology and solutions it provides for energy efficiency, earthquake-resistant construction, alternative energy and clean water.

South AfricaDow first established operations in South Africa in 1959. Today, Dow is a significant player in key sectors of the South African economy. Our commercial divisions provide components for water purification, specialty chemicals for coatings and textiles, agrosciences products, food packaging solutions and much more. Our commitment to the community is evident in our long-standing partnerships with Rehoboth Children’s Village and Thokomala Orphan Care—organizations that care for children with HIV/AIDS.

MaghrebWith Dow establishing an office in Algeria in 2011, Dow’s presence in Maghreb expands our global reach and brings us closer to our customers so we can better understand and address their market needs. As the regional hub, our strategically located office in Algiers employs dedicated teams offering enhanced technical expertise and solutions for: coating and construction, oil and gas, water, solar and agriculture.

Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Dow’s presence in the Kingdom is marked by landmark partnerships and best-in-class solutions that advance the region’s economy. Carbon Mitigation

As the Official Carbon Partner of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, Dow is implementing energy-efficient and low-carbon technologies in the areas of infrastructure, industry and agriculture throughout the Russian Federation to mitigate Sochi 2014’s direct carbon footprint.

Alternative Energy

As the world’s reliance on energy continues to grow, we must focus on alternative ways to fuel our way of life. Dow has developed innovative, renewable and alternative energy solutions, from groundbreaking photovoltaic (PV) technology, to innovative carbon-neutral biofuel applications, to heat transfer fluids that are making possible the next generation of solar technology, to systems for the fabrication of wind turbine blades.

With more than 95 percent of manufactured products enabled by chemistry, world challenges will ultimately be solved by companies like Dow, that collaborate with customers, industries, governments, academia and society. Our innovation engine is focused on development and commercialization of carbon mitigation, alternative energy, water purification, crop productivity, building efficiency and more to improve lives while protecting the planet. We are as committed to reducing our own footprint as we are to delivering technology that helps the rest of society do the same.

At Dow, we believe in the power of the Human Element to change the world. Through Dow’s Corporate Citizenship efforts, including the Dow Sustainability Corps, Dow people are putting into action the Company’s commitment to advancing human progress in several key areas, including Community Success, Science in Society and Environmental Sustainability.

The Power of the Human Element

The Power Of Sustainable Thinking

Water Purification

Dow is advancing filtration technology and working with customers, non-government organizations (NGOs) and governments around the world to identify challenges and opportunities that will result in securing more clean water for more people.

Energy Efficiency

The technology to drive gains in industrial efficiency is here and now. Currently available efficiency technology could reduce industrial energy use by 15–20 percent in a matter of months. Dow has been a leader in industrial energy efficiency for decades. We’ve reduced our own energy intensity by 20 percent since 2005 and have pledged further reductions by 2015. Our best practices can be adopted by businesses and governments worldwide.

Did You Know...Dow is more than halfway to reaching its clean-power target of 400 MW equivalent by 2025.

Dow’s $30 million loan guarantee is helping WaterHealth International (WHI) finance 2,000 community-based water purification systems that will supply clean water to more than 11 million people in rural India and Ghana.

Dow STYROFOAM™ brand insulation is installed in millions of buildings around the world — including the Bolshoy Ice Dome at the Sochi 2014 Olympics — saving about $10 billion annually in energy costs.

With Dow‚s help, Sochi 2014 will be the first Olympic Games in history to offset 100 percent of the estimated travel footprint associated with spectators and media. This amounts to 160,000 metric tons (MT) of CO2-equivalent emissions.
