global warming impacts in north carolina · energy by being energy efficient at home and at work....

Human activities are the primary cause of global warming. Deforestation and unsustainable agricultural practices coupled with the burning of fossil fuels to transport goods, drive our vehicles, heat our homes, and generate electricity have increased WHAT IS GLOBAL WARMING? The consequences of global warming have impacted public health, safety, the environment and the global economy for decades. NASA reports that 2000 to 2009 was the hottest decade ever recorded. Extreme temperatures and weather events in 2010 made headlines and set new records worldwide. carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases in our atmosphere to dangerous levels. CO2 levels are currently 30% higher than any time over the past 800,000 years. Without strong policies that lower global warming pollution, CO2 levels are expected to skyrocket to 2‐3 times this level by 2100. Excess CO2 and water vapor trapped in our atmosphere drive up temperatures and significantly alter weather systems worldwide. Other impacts, such as more extreme weather, rapid melting of glaciers, sea level rise and many others are expected to become more severe and intense over time as global warming continues to go unchecked. More heat tolerant trees could soon replace the spruce‐fir forests, greatly affecting the surrounding ecosystems in NC’s Blue Ridge Mountains. GLOBAL WARMING IMPACTS IN NORTH CAROLINA WHY SHOULD I CARE? Global warming is expected to cause sea level to rise 2‐3 ft. along North Carolina’s coast by 2100. Permanent flooding will put the state’s $15 billion coastal tourism industry at risk. Just an 18 in. rise in sea level would result in over $2.8 billion of property loss across coastal North Carolina. A U.S. Global Change Research report states that hurricane intensity has increased 50% since 1970 and is expected to rise. More powerful and potentially more frequent hurricanes will endanger lives and impact coastal habitats that serve as natural storm buffers. Global warming increases the number of hot days. Depending on how quickly and by how much we curb global warming pollution, scientists predict temperatures to rise in the Southeast between 4.5°F and 10.5°F by 2080. Hotter temperatures coupled with more extreme weather events and higher CO2 levels, will negatively affect agricultural growth and livestock farming. North Carolina ranks second nationwide for hog production that generates $2 billion each year. Heat will stress animal health, growth and reproductive success, negatively impacting the industry. NC coal‐fired power plants produce 57,275,946 tons of CO2 each year.
