Gloomy Sunday (1999) – 5. Februar Budapest in the thirties. The restaurant owner Laszlo hires the pianist András to play in his restaurant. Both men fall in love with the beautiful waitress Ilona who inspires András to his only composition. His song of Gloomy Sunday is, at first, loved and then feared, for its melancholic melody triggers off a chain of suicides. The fragile balance of the erotic ménage à trois is sent off kilter when the German Hans goes and falls in love with Ilona as well. Barbara (2012) – 26. Februar A doctor working in 1980s East Germany finds herself banished to a small country hospital. Barbara is a 2012 German drama film directed by Christian Petzold. The film competed at the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival in February 2012, where Petzold won the Silver Bear for Best Director. The film was selected as the German entry for the Best Foreign Language Oscar at the 85th Academy Awards, but it did not make the final shortlist. Writing in The Guardian, film critic Peter Bradshaw said of Barbara: "The weird oppression and seediness of the times is elegantly captured, and Hoss coolly conveys Barbara's highly strung desperation." Der Untergang (2004) – 19. März In April of 1945, Germany stands at the brink of defeat with Armies closing in. In Berlin, Adolf Hitler proclaims that Germany will still achieve victory and orders his Generals and advisers to fight to the last man. "Downfall" explores these final days of the Reich. Some senior German leaders begin defecting from their Führer, while others pledge to die with Hitler. Hitler degenerates into a paranoid shell of a man, full of optimism one moment and suicidal depression the next. Good Bye Lenin (2003) – 2. April East Germany, the year 1989: A young man protests against the regime. His mother watches the police arresting him and suffers a heart attack and falls into a coma. Some months later, the GDR does not exist anymore and the mother awakes. Since she has to avoid every excitement, the son tries to set up the GDR again for her in their flat. But the world has changed a lot. Directed by Wolfgang Becker, the cast includes Daniel Brühl, Katrin Saß, Chulpan Khamatova, and Maria Simon. Most scenes were shot at the KarlMarxAllee in Berlin and around Plattenbauten near Alexanderplatz. Soul Kitchen (2009) – 23. April In a rundown warehouse district called Soul Kitchen, chef Zinos Kazantsakis runs his restaurant with little more than a wing and prayer. Despite the rather mediocre menu, he has a regular clientele who seem to enjoy the low prices and friendly atmosphere. Unfortunately, Zinos' life quickly goes from bad to worse. He follows his girlfriend to China, leaving his brother to manage the restaurant. When he returns, his finds his brother has allowed the place to be taken over by his criminal friends.
