I Need More…Knowledge
W here has the summer gone? I’m not ready for school, for Fall, and Winter is right around the cor-
ner. It is certainly true – time marches on. Days are long but years fly by. Birthdays past as each candle is blown out. But one thing remains. The LORD is God. He says, “Do not be terrified, do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with wherever you go.” Instead of ringing our hands over the passage of time, let us ring out our praise that the LORD gives us each new day, a day of grace. Let us be glad and rejoice because this is the day the LORD has made, let us re-joice and be glad in it!
The Church of Scientology
teaches that people are basi-
cally good, that their capabili-
ties are unlimited, and those
capabilities can be realized.
People can also achieve new,
higher states of awareness
and ability. Scientology claims
that the secrets to this higher
knowledge can only be found
in their church through a pro-
cess they call “auditing.”
Seems strange? But honestly,
a cultic religion that encour-
ages you to look within your-
self for more knowledge can
really satisfy an itch.
Who doesn’t feel they need
more knowledge? And how
about being able to pat your-
self on the back for pursuing
it and supposedly finding that
knowledge within yourself?
That’s pretty appealing to the
human heart.
But God’s Word sounds much
different than L. Ron Hubbard,
who authored the book that
has become Scientology’s bible.
God says people are not basi-
cally good, that people’s natu-
ral capabilities are limited to
sinning and rebelling against
God. Continued on page 4

I Need More…Knowledge
Please bring a dish or two to share and join us on September 8, after the service,

Hope to see you there! Saturday, September 21

Continued from page 1
As a result, God says all people are the same: “There is no one who understands, no one who seeks God…The way
of peace they do not know” (Romans 3:11,17).
God is right! Not L. Ron Hubbard! Need proof? Think about Adam and Eve when they pursued more knowledge on
their own apart from God. They rejected God’s Word and sinned. Look at what their own inner pursuit of knowledge
got them and us! A world infected by sin so badly that everyone eventually dies.
Jesus knows we all lack knowledge, and he wants to fill that void. He does so not by telling us to find it inside ourselves,
but by telling us to look outside ourselves. We find knowledge in the Bible. Through his Word, God makes us wise; he
gives us insight and understanding. (See Psalm 119:98-100.) That’s because God’s Word gives us knowledge that we can’t
find or discover anywhere else.
The Bible tells about Jesus. It tells how wide, long, high, and deep Jesus’ love is for people. That love drove Jesus to come
to this world, bear the sin of every person, die on a cross, and suffer the eternal punishment for all sins. That’s love—
love so amazing that God declares that your sins are forgiven because of Jesus. That’s love—love so beyond understand-
ing that Jesus, the righteous one, should die for the unrighteous. But he did! That’s why the apostle Paul says that “this
love surpasses knowledge” (Ephesians 3:19). In Jesus’ love for you, you have everything you truly need to know, both
now and forever.
In addition, compelled by the love of Jesus, the Bible tells and demonstrates how we are to live in this sin-filled, hateful
society. His love empowers to love our neighbors and even hate our enemies. It allows us to do are work, not for our-
selves, nor our boss, nor our teacher, nor our parents, but for him who loved us and died for us.
Knowledge is important. We certainly need more of it. But the only place you will find true, God-pleasing knowledge is
in his living and active Word. Let us help you do just that each Sunday and with the different opportunities and activities
we have during the week also. Let us gather to continue to grow in the knowledge and grace of God.
Friendly Reminder…
There will be no Adult Bible Class on
September 5. Class will resume again on
September 12, when we will continue our
study of the Gospel of Mark.
SUNDAY ADULT BIBLE CLASS
I’m done with Sunday School. I’m too old for that. I know all those stories. But are you, and do you? You are
never too old to study Scripture. And I suspect you might not be familiar with these accounts in the Word of
God. So please join us for a 14-week Bible Study looking at different stories that aren't necessarily taught in Sunday
School. We meet in the Multi-Use room after refreshments each Sunday. Come. You might just learn something
new.

THURSDAY ADULT BIBLE CLASS
We are currently studying the Gospel of Mark. Mark is the shortest of the four Gospel and offers great insights of
Jesus Christ, the Son of God. All are welcome. We gather at 9 am and conclude our lively discussion by 10:15
am. Sometimes we even have treats to eat.

like to join Gloria Dei as a communicant member, we offer a basic Bible Information Class. This class can for an
individual or for a group of people. It is flexible to meet people’s schedules. And it even offer the Denny Himm

fund your time (NOT COST – since there is no cost) in the form of housework or yardwork.” Let Pastor Himm know that
you are interested so he can arrange a time that works for you.

It seems strange to think about Christmas while we sit here with the air conditioning running, but it’s going to come faster than we can imagine. Ladies, start thinking about hosting a table for our annual Ladies Advent by Candlelight. This year it will be held on Thursday, December 5. It really is a wonderful way to spend the evening and share the birth of our Savior with the special women in your life.
