I find many traditional Chinese values reflected in Rotaryvalues of service and responsibility, of respect for familyand for others. Sometimes I call Confucius the world's firstRotarian, because even though he died 2,500 years beforeRotary was founded, his ideas are very much Rotary ideas. And one of the things he said was:

In English, you say, "It is better to light a single candle thanto sit and curse the darkness."

I think that one line sums up the way we in Rotary approachthe problems of the world. There is so much difficulty. Thereare so many people who need help. Many people look atthis and say, "There is nothing I can do." So they do nothing-- and nothing changes.

But this is not the Rotary way. The Rotary way is to light acandle. I light one candle, you light one candle -- and sodo 1.2 million other Rotarians. Together, we can do so muchmore than we could ever do alone. Together, we can lightup the world.

In 2014-15, I am asking each of you to light your own Rotarycandle -- and Light Up Rotary together.

There are so many ways to Light Up Rotary. I hope many ofyou will choose to host a Rotary Day, to show your communitywhat Rotary is and what we do. I hope you will involve yourRotaract and Interact clubs in your service, to bring the newgeneration of the Rotary family closer to Rotary membership. And I hope you will keep Rotary strong by inviting newmembers into Rotary - including your own spouse andfamily.

Perhaps the most important thing we can do to Light UpRotary is to finish the job we've been working on for morethan a quarter of a century: the eradication of polio. Weare so close to our goal. But we will get there only if wekeep up the fight, keep up the momentum, and close thefunding gap for the polio endgame plan.

Light Up Rotary is our theme for this year, but it is more thanjust a theme. It is how we in Rotary see the world and ourrole in it. We believe that no one should sit alone in thedarkness. Instead, we can come together, all 1.2 million ofus, to Light Up Rotary. This is our goal -- and my challengeto you.

Message of District Governor

02

SHAHBAZ QURESHIDistrict Governor 2014-15

Greetings to all the members of the “best class clubs” I wouldlike to welcome you all to the Rotary Year 2014-2015.

Let us start with congratulating each other for being part of1.22 million Rotarians aiming to light up the world & light upRotary.

There are 34,282 Rotary Clubs in more than 200 countries, weare part of an extended family & our outreach extends to 1.22million friends.

Following are some of the issues facing our country today

Education - “Education is the most powerful weapon whichyou can use to change the world”. Official statistics releasedby the Federal Education Ministry of Pakistan depict the overallliteracy rate is 46 per cent, while only 26 per cent of girls areliterate. Independent sources, however, place the overallliteracy rate at 26 per cent and the rate for girls and womenat 12 per cent, contending that the higher figures includepeople who can handle little more than a signature. This isa grim picture and demands immediate attention, I urge allRotarians to work towards education of the lesser privileged.

Polio Eradication - We are 99% of the way to a polio-free world- truly, “This Close” to eradicating polio forever. Three endemiccountries left, 2.5 billion children immunized against polio. Asper statistics provided by expanded program on immunizationin Pakistan 104 cases of Polio have been registered in Pakistanto date. With FATA registering 76 cases, KPK 18 cases, Sindh9 cases & 1 case in Baluchistan. Let us pledge to work togetherin eradicating this menace from Pakistan.

Water & Sanitation - 15.3 M people in Pakistan don't haveaccess to safe water. Over 93 million people don't haveaccess to adequate sanitation in Pakistan, over half of thepopulation. Over 40,000 children die every year from diarrheacaused by unsafe water and poor sanitation in Pakistan.

In the end I would like to share this inspirational quote “WhenMIND is weak, situation is a PROBLEM; When MIND is balanced, situation is a CHALLENGE; When MIND is strong, situationbecomes OPPORTUNITY”.

These are challenges to all us Rotarians, let us prevail overthem & convert them into opportunities to shine the RotaryLight. As we have started our Rotary Year, let's join handstogether and engage in changing lives. Proud to be a Rotarian!

Light Up Rotary

03

Light Up Rotary is not just our theme for the year-it is a call for each of us to take action andmake Rotary stronger. Each year rotary clubs around the world grow instrength and size. By this year, there are 34,282 clubshosting 1.2 million members worldwide. RotaryInternational as an organization is purposed withbringing together business and professional leadersin order to provide humanitarian services whileencouraging high ethical standards and furthermorehelping to build goodwill and peace in the world. We are an organization that is open to all humansof the Earth, regardless of gender, race, religion orpolitical ideologies. Through our morals, we havestrived to achieve greatness while making a visiblechange in the world we live in. We are the leaderswho act responsibly and take action to tackle someof the world's most pressing chal lenges.

However, even with over a million members, our jobis not easy. The number of people in this worldneeding help clearly outweighs the number of peopleoffering help. The world is still stricken with poverty, illiteracy is rampant which leads to all sorts of othersocial problems, diseases like polio have still not beeneradicated even though vaccines are freely availableand large populations of homeless families still exist. The Rotary clubs work all year long to try to resolvethe social issues that plague our nations and in manyinstances, we have achieved greatness. It is predictedthat by December, 2015, the world would be polio-free.

But even with all these achievements, we will continueto increase our efforts to help the less fortunate ofour society. Our goals may be ambitious but theyare definitely reachable. This year, as always, ourdistrict will work towards supporting and strengtheningour clubs and its members, we will focus and increaseour humanitarian services and furthermore we willstrive to enhance our public image and spreadawareness of our causes.

RI President-elect Gary C.K. Huang chose Light UpRotary as his theme for 2014-15. Huang was inspiredby the teachings of Chinese philosopher Confuciuswho said: "It is better to light a single candle, than tosit and curse the darkness."

"There are so many problems in the world, so manypeople who need help. Many people say, 'There'snothing I can do.' So they sit there doing nothing.Meanwhile everything stays dark," Huang told the537 district governors and their spouses and partnerswho are attending the 2014 International Assembly

in San Diego, California.

"The Rotary way is the Confucius way. The Rotary wayis to light a candle. I light one, you light one, 1.2million Rotarians light one. Together, we light up theworld," said Huang, who is a member of the RotaryClub of Taipei in Taiwan.

After announcing his theme at the opening sessionof the five-day training meeting, Huang urged clubmembers tonight Up Rotary in the coming year byhosting a Rotary Day in their community and includinglocal Rotaract and Interact members in their serviceprojects.

"How you Light Up Rotary is up to you," Huang said."You know where you are strong, you know what yourcommunity needs, and you know how you can help."

Huang also shared his membership developmentgoals, including the need for more women andyoung adults and his goal to increase membershipto a total of 1.3 million members. He asked Rotariansto invite their spouses, family members, and friendsto join Rotary.

"We need to assume leadership for building strongclubs, and that starts with bringing in new members,"he said.

Addressing the status of the fight against polio, Huangnoted that with the current momentum Rotary is ontrack to achieve full polio eradication by 2018.

"When we eradicate polio - and we will - we will haveproved ourselves an organization capable of greatthings. And we'll be even better equipped for thenext challenge we choose to take on. We'll havegiven the world a gift that will endure forever," hesaid.

By continuing to fight against polio, setting an examplein local communities, and growing membership,Huang hopes to see Rotary shine brighter than ever.

"Light Up Rotary is our theme, but it is more than ourtheme. It is how we live in Rotary, how we think inRotary, how we feel, how we work," Huang said. "It ishow we make a difference - every day, in every club, every district, and every country where we serve."

Rotary Day

04

Light Up Rotary by participating in Rotary Days. The Rotary Day concept is a simple one: hold afun, informal event in your community for the non-Rotary public and use it as an opportunity tointroduce them to Rotary. It's that easy. Rotary Dayscan help your club drive up interest in membership, strengthen your club's relationships with localinstitutions and community members, and improveRotary's image in your community. Imagine thecollective impact we can have if all 34,000 Rotaryclubs worldwide make a concerted effort tointroduce the public to the fun, rewardingexperiences that we all enjoy as Rotary members.

Hosting a Rotary DayAny club, big or small, can host a Rotary Day.Neighboring clubs can pool their resources andcohost a Rotary Day event, and even entire districtscan come together to host a large-scale RotaryDay.Rotary Days can take any form, as long as theyare fun and appealing to the non-Rotary public. Here are just a few possibilities:u Hold an outdoor picnic or barbecueu Host a sporting event or concertu Organize a family fun runu Align the event with a public parade or festivalu Sponsor an event at a museum, art gallery, or

cultural centeru Secure an auditorium or arena and plan a

ticketed reception or buffet dinner

Tips for Rotary Day plannersu Feature guests that will appeal to a non-Rotary

audience. Consider inspirational speakers, celebrities, musicians, or other public figures.

u If the event will offer food, keep it simple - forexample, a barbecue buffet rather than aformal, sit-down meal.

u Keep admission prices low. Approach localbusinesses to sponsor your event.

u Make your event welcoming to families.Encourage members to bring their spouses, children, and other relatives.

u Avoid using Rotary jargon or referring to internaltraditions; present Rotary as an enticingopportunity for prospective members to makenew friends, exchange ideas, and take actionto improve their local community and the world.

u Highl ightthe work ofo r d i n a r yR o t a r ym e m b e r sd o i n gextraordinaryhumanitarianwork.u Considerincluding ah a n d s - o ns e r v i c eproject as partof the event togive visitorsthe chance tosee firsthandhow Rotary benefits the community.u Recognize non-Rotary community members

who embody Rotary 's service ideals.u Seek coverage for the event in local news

media.u Collect participants' contact information and

follow up within two weeks to invite them toattend a club meeting or event.

National Rotary DaysIn addition to the many club- and district-levelRotary Days that will take place this year, there willbe a select number of national Rotary Daysfacilitated by current RI directors and other seniorleaders. These events will convey Rotary's relevance, highlight our good work, and appeal specificallyto residents of the countries where they take place.Visit President Huang's page on rotary.org after 1July 2014 for details on these events.

Rotary Days recognit ion for clubsDistrict governors are encouraged to give specialawards to clubs that undertake successful RotaryDay events during 2014-15.

Rotary will provide governors with an electronictemplate for a certificate.

RI District 3271-Goals

District Goals

The Rotary foundation was formed in 1905 andsince then the foundation has grown significantlyin size and numbers. Only 16 years after beingformed, Rotary had clubs on six continents. Nowafter 109 years if service, there are 34,282 clubsaround the world. Yet, one of the foundation's maingoals is to continue growing in size and strength. Our mission to enable Rotarians to advance worldunderstanding, goodwill, and peace is a lofty goalthat can only be met through sustained action andthe ongoing commitment of Rotarians.

Each year, the president of Rotary Internationalchooses a theme as an embodiment of theintentions of Rotarians, and the chair of TheRotary Foundation Trustees expresses the goalsfor the Foundation.

Goal setting helps us determine our priorities, get organized, make crucial decisions, andrealize our dreams. Clearly stated goals providea framework for measuring achievement andcan be modified by experience to reflect anorganization's accomplishments.

Support and strengthen clubsThe rotary foundation is no doubt a very activeorganization. But as part of our goals, we willcontinue to strengthen and support are clubs. Weencourage all our members to innovate and put-forward their ideas on new causes or even passsuggestions on how to improve our current efforts. We encourage all our clubs to participate in avariety of humanitarian activities. Only through ourefforts can we make a difference in this world. Wewelcome people of all races, genders, religionsand professions to come and join our clubs. Ouraim is to reach 1.3 million members this year. Inthe process we hope to even start new clubs in adiverse range of nations.

Focus and Increase Humanitarian ServiceThis year, we hope to completely eradicate poliofrom the face of the Earth. We have been successfulin our efforts so far, but now it is time to finish thejob. We hope to increase our efforts in Nigeria,Afghanistan, and Pakistan. We shall do so byspreading awareness about the risks of this disease

and removing incorrect myths about the vaccines.

Other than polio, we hope to increase our effortsin other projects as well. Our six areas of focus thisyear are promoting peace and confl ictprevention/resolution, disease prevention andtreatment, providing clean water and sanitation, maternal and child health, basic education andliteracy and overall economic and communitydevelopment.

We intend to collaborate with other organizationsto support our humanitarian work and at the same

time we will hopefully create significant projectsboth locally and internationally.

Enhance Public Image and AwarenessCreating awareness about a social problem isusually the first step in the battle to resolve theproblem. And the foundation has been rathersuccessful in creating awareness of about theplagues of our society and have gained greatsupport as a result. But we are not only focused onspreading awareness of the problems but are alsofocused on gaining publicity and improving ourbrand image, both internally and externally.

We hope to keep our websites as a recruitingground by keeping them updated with timelyinformation and a focused list of our subject matter.Social media hubs like Facebook and Twitter canbe a great place to improve our public image.Furthermore, we will improve our campaigns bymaking them more vibrant and attractive.
