Message from RIPresident

Four months into this year of working to Light Up Rotary, I am more excitedabout Rotary than ever before. I've been to 22 countries, visited dozens ofcities, and met thousands of Rotarians. I've seen amazing projects andbeen inspired over and over again by the terrific work Rotarians do all overthe world. And I've been privileged to be part of all kinds of Rotary events, from club meetings to Rotary institutes, from Rotary Days to Foundationdinners.

Every event is memorable. I feel especially honored when I am invited toshare in club celebrations. To me, taking part in a Rotary club celebrationas Rotary International president is like being invited to a family event asan honored guest. Indeed, Rotary is the biggest family in the world.

You could say that Rotary is built of service: Each project is another brickin the big building that is Rotary. If our service forms the bricks, then thereis no question that friendship is the mortar that holds those bricks together.I see this every day, but nowhere more clearly than at some of the mostspecial Rotary club events: thei r centennial celebrat ions.

Being president of Rotary International in its 110th year, I've been lucky totake part in a number of these. It is natural, when visiting long-serving clubs,to want to know what their secret is - because I have always noticed thatthe longest-serving clubs are also some of the most productive. They arelarge, they are active, and they do great work. Not only that, but they havea great time doing it.

Of course, that is their secret: In Rotary, strong friendships and great servicego hand in hand. When we enjoy our work, we want to do it. We want towork harder, and we want to work better. We look forward to Rotary meetings.Even when our lives are busy, we make Rotary a priority - because we wantto see our friends, and we want to serve.

That is why Rotary is still here, after more than 109 years. In Chinese, wesay:

A life without a friend is a life without sun. Our Rotary friendships give lightto our lives, and it is Rotary friendship - as well as service - that lets us LightUp Rotary.

SHAHBAZ QURESHIDG 2014-15

Welcome to the 5th month of the Rotary Year 2014-2015. Before my wordsdivert towards our month's theme and projects, I would like to express mygratitude to all the clubs and their respective Presidents, all of whom havetaken out valuable time from their busy schedules for the less-fortunate ofour society. Our mother Earth has given all that we need to survive and livehappy and healthy lives. Yet that are many who still lack basic necessitiessuch as clean drinking water, food, medical services, education and basichousing. We have all been lucky enough to be blessed with all thesenecessities and it is time we showed our gratitude by extending a helpinghand to others. Therefore, my thanks go out to all those who have takenpart in our projects and those who have donated to our causes.

The month of November is dedicated to The Rotary Foundation. TheFoundation is a corporation that supports the efforts of Rotary International. The aim of the foundation is to achieve world understanding and peacethrough international humanitarian, educational and cultural exchangeprograms. The efforts of the foundation are only made possible throughthe voluntary contributions from our fellow Rotarians and friends alike. Itensures our vision of a better world.

The foundation is destined to support programs intended for Polio Eradication,Humanitarian Grants and Educational programs. The Polio Plus programwas started in 1985 and since then more than 2 billion children havereceived oral polio vaccine. Because of the program, 209 countries arenow polio-free and only 3 countries (Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria) areleft with endemic polio. Through Humanitarian Grant Programs, we havefunded grants for Disaster Recovery, Health, Hunger and Humanity grantsand many more. Through our Educational programs, we have providedgrants for University teachers, Peace fellowships, Group Study Exchangeand provided scholarships for many deserving individuals.

No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted. Therefore, it is ourright to take what this world has to offer, but at the same time give somethingback. No one has ever become poor by giving. By doing so, even afterwe depart from this world, we would have left a footprint through the actsof kindness and the help we have provided. What we give away, will bethe wealth we take with us to the afterlife.

The Foundation takesyour contributions and monetary gifts and transformsthem into projects such as Group Study Exchange(GSE), Polio Eradication, Hunger and HumanitarianGrants, promoting peace, fighting illiteracy and manymore. The Foundation is the way we fund so many ofthe things that make us proud to be called Rotarians. The contributions and the hard-work of our fellowRotarians makes us one of the highest rated charitiesin terms of accountability, transparency and financialstrength. Our projects, each year, have been successful inimproving the health and living conditions of numerousindividuals and families around the globe and theirappreciation can be seen through the smiles and joy

that is seen on their faces after a significant changehas been made to their harsh lives which would not

have been possible without donations and the hard-

work of our members and those associated. This yearthe foundation has built several homes for destitutefamilies in the interior part of Sindh who had no roofover their heads, provided water sanitation devicesto hospitals around the nation, provided free medicalservices to thousands and are close to eradicatingpolio from the face of the Earth and much more.

November is Rotary Foundation month and this is thetime we reflect on the programs we sponsor andsupport. It is the time we can learn on how we improveon these programs and how each of us can contributeto make sure these programs continue to improvethe lives of the many we have touched and the manymore we can save. Its time to create a better worldand every one of you can make a difference.
