He elaborately explained about the opportunities for an IT engineer backed with MBA can take up. One can perform various roles in a traditional IT company or the IT department of any business; ranging from Business analytics, MIS to System analyst. Dr. Kiran Yadav, MMS from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai and B.Sc (Mathematics) from Royal Institute of Science, currently a faculty of Marketing at GNIMS, shared the dais with the speakers for explaining the significance of MBA in a graduate’s life. He very tactfully made the students realize the difference between undergrad attitude of rot learning and PGDM. Being from a mathematics background he asked the students an elementary level math question – Explain Pythagoras theorem, its proof and its daily life applications? Students were baffled when he announced monetary prize from his pocket for anyone who gave the answer. Still no one in the crowd of 100 could remember the exact theorem learnt in school. However, Dr. Kiran Sir awarded one of the girls who could at least state the theorem somewhat. The learning behind performing that act was to make the students aware of the difference between a graduate and an MBA. A degree of PGDM would evolve you into being a Manager, a problem solver; and the companies are in constant hunt for employees of such caliber. Prof. Kapil Bhopatkar (Faculty-in-charge Finance and Head of Admissions & Marketing at GNIMS) further explained about the PGDM programs at GNIMS and how they help in developing a student into a professional. The institute had started 2 types of PGDM programs – one was the normal course and the other was Intensive Industry Immersion PGDM. The later was a specially designed program for those students who wanted to learn along with a job. He emphasized the students to keep a broad mind while choosing their specialization and

learn all aspects of business. At a certain point of time in your career, you will be piled with numerous responsibilities pertaining to various departments in an organization, and at that time being a ‘Business guy’ would prove worthy than staying in a ‘water-tight compartment’ and restricting your growth. This is the sole reason behind including all specialization related subjects in the 1st year curriculum of the PGDM course, so that the students can chose wisely. He later explained the admission procedures and fees structure, which was backed by various banks loan facilities. Further, he stated the USP of the PGDM programs at GNIMS was an International IV with foreign universities (viz., Teesside University, UK) which would enable students to get an exposure of global industry. At the end of his speech he informed them about the various soft skills ingrained among students during these programs for instance students are made to prepare a short film on their life, to help them answer the most frequent interview question – Tell me about yourself? Mr. Mahesh Kamath very beautifully clarified the entire career building process with an analogy of a childhood drawing – ‘A boat in a river scenery’. He said that while choosing a career we are all rowing a boat in a river; where the bright sun represents our guide and the flow of river is our path on which we have to row perfectly to reach our destination. His message to the students was not to get distracted by looking at the other boats rowing parallel to them, to think holistically and keep their boat steady in the river of career. Ms. Sunayana Madadeshwar elaborately talked upon the various employment opportunities such as HR Generalist (Performing all HR functions), HR Specialist (Performing specific HR function viz., Training & Development) and upcoming avenues in Business HR and HR Consultancy services. The event was concluded by Q & A session and later application forms were filled by the students for giving the Aptitude Test/Entrance Exam of GNIMS, to get an admission to the next batch in the prestigious institute. The guest speakers along with the GNIMS faculty gave a clarion call to the graduates’ present to think and choose wisely their careers. Mr. Niketan Taware thanked GNIMS, Mr. Kapil Sir and Mr. Kiran Sir for giving a chance to his students to emerge as tomorrow’s famous corporate personalities after being developed and polished at GNIMS.

YOKOHAMA EDUCATION SEMINAR: Dr. D. Y. Patil, Director and Prof. Kapil Bhopatkar, FIC (Finance), Head (Admissions and Marketing) attended the Yokohama Edufair on December 7, 2018 at ITC Maratha, Andheri.

ISEC TALKS: A PHILOSOPHICAL ENTREPRENEURIAL JOURNEY Dr. Har Prasad gave a talk on Well-being, Happiness, Longevity and Transcendence in Life: Entrepreneurship Option on December 13, 2018, from 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm in Room No. 103. Being an Entrepreneur is a dream of many, as it provides you the liberty of being your own boss and take charge of your financial future. While there are many aspects of entrepreneurship that lure the young minds, but being a businessman i.e. a man who is always busy, can be a daunting task with the never-ending stress & anxiety. Some of the occupational hazards which an entrepreneurial career is full of includes loneliness, unwavering focus, sporadic income, avoiding time wasting activities and last but not the least work-life balance. Prof. Mrinal Phalle introduced Dr. Har Prashad, preceded by his long list of achievements at national and international level. Dr. D. Y. Patil and Prof. Kiran Yadav welcomed him with a bouquet of flowers and a small gift bag as a token of love from the GNIMS family. As the students kept pouring in for the seminar after finishing their lectures, the guest speaker engaged in a deep conversation with the GNIMS faculty present. He asked everyone a simple question “Who are you?”. Prof. Satvinder Singh Bedi replied to it that he is someone who has developed from a child to an adult, searching the purpose of life while fulfilling his duties along the way. He was curious to know what is the objective of everyone’s life, as inspired by John Lenon’s Poem – The Meaning of life. After acknowledging the replies from the audience, Dr. Har Prashad shared his insights on the philosophies of life and said that the purpose of life is living it fully while fulfilling the tasks assigned to us. He enchanted everyone with references from holy books of Bhagvad Gita and Guru Granth Sahib.Dr. Har Prashad (Senior Deputy General Manager at the Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited) was invited to the ISEC Talks platform for sharing his deep wisdom on how to manage life while on your entrepreneurial journey. He obtained an M.E. (Hons) degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1970, and subsequently, Ph.D. in Tribology; but his yearning for understanding life and its philosophies has encouraged him to publish 18 books on Human Sciences & secrets of leading a happy and content life (Know Thyself, Scientific Integration of Queries on Inner Human Life, etc.). All the students and faculty alike were inquisitive about gaining the knowledge of Life and Love from the wise person standing in front of them. Dr. Har Prashadvery beautifully broke the two words into meaningful acronyms, stating: – LIFE = Learning + Intelligence + Freedom + Evolution

He summarized it saying that in Life we need to keep Learning to garner intelligence which gives us freedom of thoughts and eventually evolves us as a human being. In the same way, he broke the word LOVE as: –LOVE = Listening + Observe + Venture + Evolve

Dr. Har Prashad said that when someone is in Love, they need to listen to their partner attentively, observe them carefully and venture to make any changes if needed, to evolve into a healthier relationship and thus a contended life.

Page 5: GNIMITES E-Newsletter Volume 7, Issue No. 12 DECEMBER 2018 ... · Seminar Hall. In the ever-growing competitive world, where the scope after graduation is ... Management plays a pivotal

Later, he asked the audience another question – What has not changed in you? Considering the perplexed crowd, he decided to answer it himself. He said that whatever has not changed in you is life – Consciousness. Your consciousness remains unchanged throughout life. He considered that self-realization or enlightenment can be achieved by visualizing your consciousness. We need to annihilate the mind to feel the presence of soul. All the wisdom shared by the speaker had been thought provoking but it would be much more relevant for the GNIMS students venturing into the industry in future. There was a lot of debate among the speaker and the faculty. They challenged the speaker’s thoughts on karma, fate, stress and Destiny. He said that we are not in control of anything and that everything happens as per the almighty’s subtle plans. On which Prof. Kiran Yadav pointed out that if everything is written in fate, then why should we even stress and toil in our life. Dr. Har Prashad explained him and the audience that we often misinterpret our sacred thoughts expressed in the religious scriptures. Stress won’t bring solution to the problems but add up to it, said Dr. Prashad. Buddha, the enlightened one had said that, do your best to the maximum extent and leave all the rest, then you will achieve success. Lord Krishna even said that, do your duty honestly and forget the rest. Why to worry and compare when you are doing your best was the answer to the faculty’s queries. Karma will take care of the rest. You need to make peace with yourself. You should do your duty and not take stress. Sometimes acceptance is the only thing we are left with in life as it works according to law of nature and we cannot challenge it.

As the session was coming to an end, one of the students asked about how should we apply these concepts of well-being, happiness, longevity and transcendence in life, while pursuing our studies for entrepreneurial career. He replied that learn to be Happy and live in present, live in your breath. Keep your mind calm, fulfill your duties honestly and try to develop yourself physically, mentally and spiritually. He said that happiness can be achieved if we curb our desires and so expressed it mathematically as, Happiness = No. of Desires fulfilled / Total No. of Desires. This means if we can eliminate all desires then Happiness will be infinite. If you could limit your desires, happiness will multiply, longevity will increase and you will transcend with the force.

Page 6: GNIMITES E-Newsletter Volume 7, Issue No. 12 DECEMBER 2018 ... · Seminar Hall. In the ever-growing competitive world, where the scope after graduation is ... Management plays a pivotal

Prof. Kapil Bhopatkar (FIC (Finance), Head (Admissions and Marketing)) from GNIMS was the keynote speaker for the event. He began his address by briefing about the Financial Markets and various aspects of it. Later he talked on the intricate areas of financial markets viz., Derivatives, Futures & Options, Mutual Funds etc. It is a known fact these days that Investing in Financial Markets is the best option if you want to multiply your wealth, however Markets are not everyone’s cup of tea. Hence people follow those who have made it big. For instance, many of you must have heard him: – “I will tell you how to become rich. Close the doors. Be fearful when others are greedy. Be greedy when others are fearful.” – Warren Buffett.

The known players in this field have garnered a lot of knowledge while making big money in this sector globally. He continued further that Investing in financial markets can give you the best returns, provided you have got a good understanding of markets & guidance from the market experts. A sound knowledge of the financial markets, equipped with experience and finance tools (software), would be of great leverage to the finance professionals or those who are willing to make a career in Finance. This is where comes the role of our institute.

Guru Nanak Institute of Management Studies (GNIMS) and NSE Academy Limited (NAL), a wholly owned subsidiary of The National Stock Exchange (NSE) are providing a joint certificate course (EMBA in Financial Markets) – for the first time in Mumbai. Prof. Kapil Sir, also the head of Admissions, shared some insights on the admission process for this promising program. Our focus in this program is learning with placement opportunities. Simulated live market trading exposure is provided to students through NSE Academy’s expertise and software, providing students with exposure to the real operating scenarios of the financial world. Paul Clitheroe (Financial analyst & advisor, Publisher, Television & Radio Presenter) had once quoted that: – “Invest in yourself. Your career is the engine of your wealth.” David Bakke from Investopedia had elaborated on the famous quote that, “We all want wealth, but how do we achieve it? It starts with a successful career which relies on your skills and talents. Invest in yourself through school, books, or a quality job where you can acquire a quality skill set. Identify your talents and find a way to turn them into an income-generating vehicle. In doing so, you can truly leverage your career into an “engine of your wealth.”

The seminar concluded with contented attendees by the speaker’s informative and motivational address. They showed genuine interest in pursuing the program and equipping themselves for a brighter future in the finance industry.
