SPRINGAn opportunity for dynamic growth and inspiration

S pring is a time for new beginnings and development. in nature, baby animals are born, flowers are in bloom

and plant life is green, fresh and abundant. Spring is the perfect season to start planting the seeds in your life, following through with ideas and implementing changes. it’s a great time to detox and spring clean your home and personal life. as it is traditionally a time for cleansing, your spring diet should contain more liver and gallblad-der cleansing vegetarian foods like green leafy salads, seaweed, lightly stir-fried vegetables, fresh herbs, bitter and sour soups. Start the day with some fresh green juice and sip on dandelion tea throughout the day. during the spring duration burn pure essential oils of rosemary, grapefruit, coriander, basil and geranium to help you manifest your ideals and dreams.

ARCHiTeCTURe

Architect Milos Obradovich and artist Mandy Francis have combined their talents to create a unique house in Ettalong. This contemporary home has a timeless quality because of the extensive use of recycled materials. There are also strong Japanese influences throughout the house such as the use of small courtyards as an integral part of the living space.

MiloS: this is a house of little courtyards, there are 6, kind of like train carriages with courtyards in between. originally there was an old garage and a single bedroom cottage here, just a 7m by 39m building eaten out by white ants. we reframed the structure and reclad it, and it’s still part of the house.

MaNdy: i love the garden, and the way the house opens out to it – that’s really my big thing. this site was literally concrete from end to end when we arrived, so any green you see i put in!

MiloS: one of my heroes is walter Segal, a lon-don architect in the 70s and 80s, who devised an ecologically sound construction method so that ordinary people could build their own houses cheaply. there was a booklet of seven a3 pages. you could take it to the hardware store, give them the list of materials that would get delivered and then you could start building your house – you didn’t need any special skills. we went to see some of these houses in lewisham in london.

MaNdy: we’re both inspired by family, nature and light. i also love the story about installation

artist and mum louise bourgeois, who moved her kitchen into her studio. hence we ended up with a working, eating and living area with concrete floors and large opening doors which could trans-form into my studio at any time. Milos also designed the community preschool at Pretty Beach which created a lot of interest when it opened in 2010. Tree trunks were incorporated into the structure and recycled materials were used as much as possible.

MiloS: the feedback has been brilliant. the preschool was struggling to attract inter-est, and now there’s a waiting list to go there. the whole community has really benefited. it’s brought young people with kids back into the area. What advice do the couple have for building on the central coast?

MaNdy: i would say to try and maintain the cultural setting and don’t make houses too big. let’s keep that sleepy beach town feel.

MiloS: only make the house as big as it needs to be and that naturally minimises the envi-ronmental impact. here on the peninsular the original houses are quite small.

MaNdy: when you reuse and recycle materials, you can make a small house without ending up with major debt. that’s a big environmental and social issue.

MiloS: we incorporated everything we could from the old buildings, and brought in recycled materials from elsewhere. we cut out whole floor panels from houses being demolished and used them for floors and walls. our walls are cypress pine tongue and groove floor boards, cut to size. i really like the pre fab idea of not dismantling things but trying to use them in their original form instead. it’s another way to save on costs. What are their favourite features?

MaNdy: for me it would be the feeling of an open house with connection to the garden.

MiloS: it’s a meandering plan. although the block is relatively small the house extends into all corners, like fingers going out everywhere. it has a centre, a heart, where we live, and then there are wings connected by glazed corridors. the laundry and bathroom wing looking back into a courtyard, the children’s wing with sunroom, and the study and parent’s bedroom wing.

i also used natural systems of ventilation and sun to regulate the climate in the house.

MaNdy: there was a 46 degree day and we didn’t feel it at all. the walls slide apart and allow cool air from the courtyard to flow through the building.

What’s next?MiloS: we built the house to show that you

can build for not much money if it’s designed well. you can have a small space but when it incorporates the equivalent amount of space outside, it feels bigger.

we want to extend these ideas and hone them. people have this idea that custom made things blow the budget every time but it doesn’t have to be that way. i’m trying to undo those myths so people see ways they can build environmen-tally, beautifully and economically. So many new houses are just toxic and lifeless.

when we first came here the neighbours couldn’t understand why we didn’t want to knock down the old cottage. but when they followed the project through to completion they got ex-cited about it. they just love the house now.

Yeah, you! bring your eyes back here, i saw you looking! i’ve got

some things to ask, some things to tell. listen up.

in the grand scheme of things, ‘logic’ is a party trick. do not base your life on it. do not commit years of your life to something because it’s the ‘logical’ choice. ewwwww, no. Just no. Go with choices that are married to words like ‘passionate’, ‘creative’, ‘expansive’, ‘joyful’, ‘loving’, and ‘crazy genius’... or whatever feelings call you... ask yourself regularly - ‘how do i want to feel?’ Move towards that.

Stop objecting to an awesome life. Stop objecting to a life that is fulfilling, joyful, creative, abundant, and loving. Stop objecting to the things you actually want! it’s totally illogical! (ha!) Stop telling yourself, and the world, all the reasons why it can’t work. Stop it. Just Stop it . it can work. it caN. Maybe not in exactly the way you’re imagining it right now, but you’ve got to clear the mental constipation first. why have you been swallowing so much junk?! constantly concocting convoluted, copious reasons why it ‘can’t work’ constricts your creative flow like crazy! flush your system. Start chew-ing on some healthier ideas and possibilities. everything you ingest matters. everything matters. you matter.

Get real quiet. Get real still. hold sacred space.

look up into the universe, the clouds are clearing... (trust me, they’re clearing.) See those stars? those are the stars of your heart’s deepest desires –- navigate by them. Navigate by the stars of your heart’s deepest desires. it’s the only way through this adventure brilliantly, gloriously alive.

you were born for this adventure, you are perfectly prepared for it... oh the places you will go, the miracles

There’s this woman on facebook who makes me turquoise with envy.

her timeline is packed with shots of her happy family, throwing parties, walking on the beach, baking cakes. then there are the selfies of her and her husband ‘so in love’, the check-ins at lovely restaurants and the cute stories about her perfectly behaved child.

if i’m honest, i almost hate her. which is bizarre if you think about it, because that woman on facebook is actually me.

you see, my facebook profile is a lie. that perfect profile picture (which hides my

double chin and grey roots) wasn’t just a quick snap. it took 20 attempts and some crafty photoshopping.

that one cute thing my son said came after two days of him being an annoying little sod. and my husband and i have been speaking in snippy, exhausted grunts for the last two years.

we all do it.we all put our best foot forward on face-

book. we don’t post pictures of us cleaning the toilet with a hangover after a sleepless night. we present the best version of ourselves and this can breed something known as facebook envy.

we’re jealous of our friends’ wonderful lives and the fun that, frankly, we’re not having. we obsess. we get bitter. we question our own lives. Some people go so far as to close down their accounts.

but if this sounds like you, don’t worry; you’re not alone. a recent study conducted by two German universities found that one in three people felt more dissatisfied with their lives after looking through their facebook feed.

“we were surprised by how many people have a negative experience from facebook, with envy leaving them feeling lonely, frus-trated or angry,” researcher hanna krasnova reported.

they also found that people in their mid-30s were more likely to envy family happiness while women were more likely to envy physical attractiveness.

interestingly, men were shown to post more self-promotional content on facebook while women stressed their good looks and social lives.

So how do you avoid facebook envy? is there a cure? well, here are my top tips:1. Admit it: own your jealousy and don’t

live in denial. 2. Don’t believe the hype: remember,

facebook is not the whole story; it’s only the bits people want to show.

3. Share the joy: instead of resenting your friends’ happiness, click the ‘like’ button and enjoy it with them.

4. Stop comparing: don’t look at others to set the bar of how happy you should or could be and instead develop your own goals.

5. Step away: if you’re spending too much time obsessing over someone’s profile, turn the computer off and start living!

it’s easy to fall into the habit of convert-ing every moment into your life into a witty status update. you stop enjoying the view and instead take a snap of it ready to upload.

So next time you see a svelte snap of a friend, or a boastful status update about a job promotion, smile, ‘like’ and take it with a biG pinch of salt!

this place before your automatic polite hasn’t been programmed to expect anything. being alert is the best place to meet yourself and monitor your responses.

the more we learn to understand ourselves the more secure we feel in the world.

this is really important – we don’t need to know how others are going to behave, we need to know how we are going to react to situations regardless of how unexpected they might be. if we are confident with our own self we will know instantly how to rebalance things.

the person with the most self-knowledge controls what happens next. One of the main aims of the study of phi-

losophy is to ‘know thyself’. only when this is achieved can we have a better control of our own experience. when we know what we like it’s easier to make choices. when we know what we think is correct behaviour it’s easier to respond to situations that appear incorrect.

one of the best ways to learn about you is to move out of your comfort zone. Most of the time we never ask ourselves to deal with the unexpected and just travel around inside our comfort zone. it’s a safe secure place to dwell.

in your regular day you have a certain idea of what to expect, which might explain how you can be driving your usual road and suddenly realise you hadn’t been paying attention to the last few minutes. your automatic pilot was in control while your mind was day dreaming on something else.

a great way to leave your comfort zone is to travel. when in a foreign place expectations can be almost a waste of time. if the people we are dealing with don’t have the same culture or even the same language there isn’t much point having expectations about their behaviour. Most of the time we spend trying to guess how other people are going to behave when the only control we ever have is over own actions. even the lonely planet Guide won’t be much help – it might give clues on local customs, but it won’t have a clue about your response!

you will be confronted with your own preju-dices (the word means pre –judge) and put in situations that you haven’t rehearsed, where you need to make quick responses to things you have no previous experience with. at times your own behaviour can be surprising.

in a foreign place you are more likely to be in the present because you haven’t experienced

KnOW THYSeLF

We judge other’s intelligence by our ability to understand them.

example: on a subway in rome two kids steal a mobile phone. one hands it to the other who slips it into his pants. when a passenger spots this she knows it’s not right and so she grabs his shirt, quickly and loudly telling the other passengers he has stolen something. with the co-operation of other passengers the phone is retrieved and things brought back to balance. the kid had studied other’s behaviour but didn’t know himself well enough to have an appropri-ate response when things were not as expected.

when you know what you think is correct you don’t need to rehearse scenarios because you will have the knowledge of how to achieve bal-ance at all times without needing to think about it. planning is unnecessary – the father who lifts the car off his child didn’t have time to think about what to do, he already knew he wanted his child to be safe and the inner knowledge on how to achieve that was there when needed.

the passenger on the train hadn’t rehearsed the situation, didn’t need to understand the kids behaviour. by being alert she knew how to respond quickly without thinking.

the only person in the world you need to understand is yourself. the only place you ever need to be is in the now.

SOULSPeAK

What is your religious/spiritual belief and its lineage?i am Muslim. the islamic faith heralds from arabia. it is our belief that islam is timeless and has always been in existence but that it was revealed by God, to the prophet Muham-mad around 610 bce.How did you come to your beliefs?i have grown up in a traditionally religious family, although not everyone in my family was devout. islam and its daily prayers, fast-ing and the life story of prophet Muhammad have appealed to me since the age of ten. i consider the natural human disposition to be inclined towards belief and religion. perhaps my attraction to islam was a result of this fact. however, when i was at university, my faith was challenged with the arguments of materi-alistic philosophy. this prompted me to search deeper answers to theological questions about God and islamic beliefs. i found my answers in the Qur’an and particularly in the theological writings of Said Nursi (d. 1960).How have they shaped you personally?islam and my beliefs are at the core of who i am as a person. they helped define how i see the purpose of life and existence and my role within the scheme of creation. My beliefs enable me to interpret the world in the way that explains human condition on earth and our place in history at this point in time. islam has also helped me develop and mature as a person. it has taught me the see myself holisti-cally with mental, spiritual and emotional needs and faculties. What are your challenges spiritually?there are many challenges in life. i often strug-gle to keep the integrity of my inner and outer self. this is expressed wonderfully by rumi (d. 1273) “either be as you appear or appear as you really are”. another challenge is to keep a family-community balance. i feel both my fam-ily and the community needs me and i do not always get the balance right.

How does your practice take form? (traditions: prayer? ritual/ceremony? food? gatherings?) My practice is oriented around the five pillars of islam especially five daily prayers and fast-ing. i fast twice a week outside of ramadan. this fast is optional and was practiced by the prophet Muhammad. i also practice the important act of reflection (tafakkur) over the creation as recommended by the Qur’an. with all these practices though is to maintain sincerity and a constant awareness of God’s presence in everyday life.To what end do you practice your beliefs? Where will you go when you leave your body?i believe there is an afterlife. if God created the universe and placed me on earth showing me countless signs of his compassion, it would not be consistent with God’s compassion that i would be sent to eternal oblivion. i am believe i will go to a better place than the earth and be able to see God in paradise and be with wonderfully good human beings. Please share with us a short quote, lyrics, prayer or short teaching that has inspired you lately.“o you soul at rest! return to your lord, well-pleased (with him and his treatment of you), and well-pleasing to him. enter, then, among My servants! and enter my paradise!” (Qur’an, 89:27-30)

Achieving emotional Balance using Herbs

Herbs have long been utilised to help address emotional issues and mood disorders,

which can ultimately affect us physically if left unresolved.

both in eastern and western cultures there are a number of herbs renowned for their ef-ficacy in addressing nervous system problems. for example, Tulsi is wonderful for stress relief; its uplifting and calming nature can help ease anxiety and mild depression. another herb Ginseng, helps keep energy levels up whilst reducing stress and anxiety. it promotes a calm, clear mind and is useful for concentration and focus.

a class of herbs great for balancing mood are the nervines. these are plants that calm the nervous system for relaxation during times of stress or fear. Lemon Balm is one such calming herb that is also useful for palpitations caused by anxiety.

for more chronic and entrenched mood problems St. John’s Wort is an uplifting plant that is perfect for treating mild depression. its bright yellow flow-ers are an indication of its sunny nature. on an energetic level, it is associated with the light, and is thought to help people “see the light” in a dark situation.

herbs come in many forms from fresh, through to dried, as a tea, capsule or liquid tincture. choose the form you are most likely to stick with – for instance the liquid extract form may often be stronger and more easily absorbed, but can be bitter and not so pleasant tasting. Check with your health provider before taking herbs or supplements.

This year has been a big one for singer/song-writer Kita Alexander. From busking at markets to FeSTiVAL GiGS and the release of her first eP, this talented seventeen year old’s natural charm shines through it all…

the festival before, but I know it is one of great-est in the pack. I’m looking forward to playing to a crowd which will be the biggest yet, and being in the presence of many other amazing artistic wizards.

Q: You also do some modelling work?Yeah I do a bit on the sly. I have a few friends

that have successfully launched their own label. They inspire me to the moon.

Q: One of the themes we’re looking at in this issue of the magazine is ‘Envy’. Some people say it’s just part of human nature – when do you think it can become a negative thing?

I don’t like envy at all. I admit I have been guilty of experiencing the emotion. But I try so hard to steer clear from it. I suppose in some cases you can use it to further yourself more, but at the same time I’d prefer to reach my per-sonal goals than to just try and be better than someone else.

MUSiC

Q: Your first EP, Lion Hat, is just out – it’s beautiful! What’s your favourite track? What was the recording process like for you?

Thanks a billion! Hmmm I love them all equally, they’re my children. But I love playing “Don’t Push It” and “Sundaylood” live. The proc-ess was so much fun because I recorded with a really good friend of mine, Jordan Millar. We had a ball!

Q: What music are you listening to and who were you influenced by?

At the moment I’m listening to a lot of old tunes from The Doors and Fleetwood Mac. Plus a relatively new artist, Jake Bugg. I am influenced by anything and everything. A lot of my lyrics come from mishearing the words of songs!

Q: You’re playing Festival of the Sun this year. What are you most looking forward to?

Yeah I am! I’m super keen. I haven’t been to

Q: How do you think the popularity of new social medias and sites like youtube have changed how people perceive success?

I try not to get caught up in this either. It’s cool to have people following you, but even if I had ten loyal followers then I’d rate that as success.

Q: Your blog (kaelaearth.tumblr.com) has some cool recipes – what food are you loving right now?

Thanks! I started it up just for my own amuse-ment and recollection. I love whole, tasty foods. But quinoa sushi is always on my mind these days…

Q: What are three things that are essential to you everyday – what three things couldn’t you live without?

My mum, the sun and the ocean.

Q: A creative life can be a bit of a juggle, yet you seem like a grounded kinda gal – how do you keep things in balance for yourself?

I do struggle to keep focused sometimes with all my ideas. I hang out with friends, spend a lot of alone time in nature and try not to get caught up in the materialistic world. I was lucky that I was brought up in a family that taught us to appreciate everything and not take anything for granted.

wanted or needed to wear it.

opening our hearts to the notion of not being a violent person asks us to look at ways in which we are complicit to violence. as our circle of compassion widens personally (and as a society) we make different choices. Slavery was at one time a com-mon, albeit learned, socially acceptable norm. compassion and rational thinking allow us to refine and redefine what we will continue to accept and how we will choose to behave in the future.

what is to be done when something is no longer right or correct for you? how do we incorporate a new way of being when our conditioning has told us that the old ways are normal?

practice. Noticing the discomfort is the first step. feel-

ing ill at ease with what was once normal.first, we might mock others for it. then we

might feel guilt for knowing better but still choosing it... then comes the day when we realise that the sword has become too heavy. this is not the way we choose to be anymore. and we put down the sword. – Emily Holstein

The notion of accepting Ahimsa or “non vio-lence” begins as a seemingly possible task.

“don’t stab anyone,” you think to yourself “right, i can handle that...”

but of course it’s not that simple because we are all already practising violence (in some form) whether we realise it or not.

is it the need to be right? is it the clothing or products you buy? is it how you communicate? what you eat? who and what you ignore?

Violence hides, sometimes in plain sight. it is on our tV’s, at our workplaces, in our interac-tions, on our dinner plates...

does thinking about this make you uncom-fortable?

with the feeling comes the opportunity to change something that is incongruous with who you really are. let go the notions of what’s socially acceptable, what is culturally condi-tioned, what is just in the “too-hard” basket.

what are you willing to change to become more peaceful?

it’s important to remember each action of unkindness we perpetrate daily can also be compounded when we berate ourselves for it.

we must also remember to place ourselves within the circle of compassion.

A STORy…. william penn became a Quaker as a grown man. penn gathered with his new found friends but continued to wear a sword as was the fashion for men of that time. before long he began to feel uncomfortable as a member of this non violent congregation whilst continuing this old tradition. he ap-proached a friend and asked his advice. “ what do i do abut this sword?” he asked. his friend answered, “wear it for as long as you can.” penn found it was not long before he no longer

Ahimsa is an ancient Sanskrit word meaning non-violence to all living things. harmlessness in thoughts, words and actions to all life is an important tenet of many indian religions such as hinduism, buddhism and Jainism. Gandhi, who believed ahimsa to be a creative energy force, used it within the spheres of social and political reform during the early 1930’s in india. he extended his “harm none” belief even to his political opponents. this stead-fast, unapologetically honest stand behind gentle truth later inspired other significant leaders such as Martin luther king Jr.

What is Yoga?

in the western world, yoga is sometimes regarded as a form of exercise which is only practiced by very fit and flexible people. this concept is totally incorrect. yoga is an ancient indian system of philosophy which outlines 8 methods or

tiers aimed at quietening fluctuations of the mind. the human mind tends to drift off into thoughts of past experiences or future expectations.

these thoughts have an effect on a person’s wellness as the mind constantly fluctuates between the past and future without ever being “present”. the past can’t be changed, it’s happened! you can’t live in the future, it hasn’t happened! what we do have is the present moment. So embrace now – be happy now.

the aim of yoga is to control the incessant stream of thoughts that drift across the mind-scape by moving the body, focusing the mind, breathing consciously and relaxing.

yoga movement (or “asana”) is simply a place to consciously focus your mind. when the movements are performed in synchronicity with the breath, a union of body and mind takes place creating incredible states of mindfulness. the present moment has been established and the mind becomes peaceful.

yoga is a great coping mechanism for a hectic modern life. it offers practical methods aimed at developing wellness through movement and relaxation. practising yoga will help alleviate stress and tension, boost your energy and most importantly improve your health and well being.

Mary recently visited Europe as part of a Gnostic Exchange program (We exchanged Mary for funny travel stories for four weeks).

Day – Rocamadour, south west france

This morning we headed out before the flies and the heat arrived and drove to roca-

madour. this spectacular town was everything that was promised – including steep, with hundreds of stairs. the pilgrims of the past had gone this way on the road to salvation. they would climb the stairs on their knees, praying that even the sins of their thoughts would be forgiven. Modern tourists, with remnants of christian guilt still in their genes, sometimes walk the stairs backwards hoping for absolu-tion. this is a very dangerous practice – if you fell you would not stop until you reached the bottom and forgiveness would not mend your battered body!

Jenni walked all the way including the stations of the cross. this was like the super upgrade for forgiveness, guaranteeing absolu-tion for future sins as well. chris, John and i took the cable lift through the mountain which we now could see was solid rock all the way to the summit.

all this physical exertion made us hungry. as we had been mostly cooking and eating at the villa until now we chose a rather nice place with linen tablecloths, a sure sign of an upmar-ket establishment. George clooney seated us and politely interpreted the menu into french/anglaise. the food and wine was ordered. with-out realizing it i ordered a 1/2 bottle of wine and the others ordered glasses of beer.

i enjoyed the crispy duck legs and the potato something that came on the side. Jenni and John weren’t impressed with their steaks but chris was happy with his selection of lamb, which disappeared from his plate very quickly. they each had desert, mine was another glass of wine. when the account arrived i produced the famous loadngo travel card which aust post had promised would be the best way to

TRAVeLFRAnCe

manage my funds overseas. i had left every-thing else back in the Villa, taking only the camera and a small purse with the magic card and notes – two euros and one 50 euro.

i know that the french people don’t appreci-ate fuss or showy gestures, so i quickly and quietly slip one of the 5s under the receipt as a tip and handed back the silver plate. our waiter takes a glance at the offering “oui! Merci beau-coup Madame!” and vanishes from sight. as i put my trusty loadngo travel card back into the purse i see that i have 2 $5euros – which means i have just rewarded the waiter with $50 euro.

travel tip #17 – do not let the woman who orders and drinks the wine pay the tip.

once the laughing stopped and the car started we all sat in silence till we reached our villa. during afternoon siesta i dreamed that i had been overcome by some religious fever and had been drawn into the waiters prayers for financial improvement, my climbing half way to the top of the mountain had been misinter-preted as a sign of willingness to co-operate in someone’s else’s salvation.

MY Babushka doll Theoryby laureN “MoNty” MoNtGoMery

One morning as i sat at my desk, sipping on a freshly brewed coffee and completing

my morning pages, i found myself pondering my inner child. i thought; “My inner child needs some love, but i think my inner teenager needs way more!”

this got me thinking why we never hear the term “inner teenager” or “inner 21 year old” – and i realised, they’re all still in there. we are like a set of russian babushka dolls!

with each stage of our lives, we grow another ‘layer’ of ourselves. this new ‘layer’ is roughly the same model as the previous one; only it looks and feels slightly different. as we grow we change, but the old self is still inside – all the experiences and memories are there, – forming the blueprint for the next ‘doll’.

as we get older, some of these dolls may start to cause problems. they have conflicting views and beliefs to who we are today, sometimes

causing us to feel as though there are different parts of us at war deep inside.

without identifying and transforming these layered beliefs we adopt at each level, the war rages on unchecked. we must seek out those which no longer serve us, no longer feel true for us or feel as though they are holding us back.

these ‘dolls’ represent various aspects of self or stages of development within our psyche. by exploring our various ‘dolls’ and addressing whatever it is that is causing us to feel unrest within our self, we can move toward integrating each doll and become whole again.

f lowers of unparalleled

elegance and grace, orchids are one of the world’s great floral pleasures. their delicate form and colour lend the plant a rarefied quality, but their impact is immense. possessed of an almost hypnotic beauty, they draw in our gaze, which lingers, but never tires, so exquisite in their presence.

Spotted orchid, lady’s Slipper, early purple and lady orchid (the latter named for the resem-blance its petals bear to a crinoline gown) are some of the native orchids of woodland, marsh and meadow, and were well known during the Victorian era. but few of them excited the im-agination as much as the tropical varieties that began to arrive in europe from central america, africa, india and the far east as empires grew and their floral wealth was plundered. by 1885, nearly two thousand species were in cultivation.

the Victorians were in thrall to the orchid: everyone wanted to possess a little of its elegance and exotic beauty. an orchid worn in the hair, an arrangement in a vase, an entire orchid house even, never failed to impress, not least because it was so costly to buy. a favourite

OrchidRefined Beauty

variety was Dendrobium nobile from the far east: it was the easiest to grow and the most affordable, and its large pink and white flowers with velvet crimson splashes at the throat were said to have the scent of grass in the morning, honey at noon and primrose at night.

… as a gentleman’s buttonhole flower, the orchid was perfect: it had the virtue of simplicity and its beauty ensured that the wearer stood out from the crowd. in Jacques-emile blanche’s famous portrait of Marcel proust, the young writer, pale and dandy-ish, sports a white orchid on his lapel. in Swann’s Way, proust uses the flower, the lovely purple-pink cattleya orchid in particular, to symbolize love-making.
