Why spend time abroad?

You get financial support to go abroad
It is possible to go abroad and still finish your bachelor’s in 3 years
It is fun: last year’s student’s rated their stay abroad with an average of 8.2
Options
StudyA mobility window in the third year makes it possible to go abroad and still finish your bachelor’s in 3 years. This window is in the 3rd year of bachelor’s programme, but you can also go abroad during your master’s.
InternshipIf your programme includes an internship, you can do your internship abroad. This is not possible at all departments. For more information, contact your departmental coordinator. An extracurricular internship abroad is also possible.
ThesisWriting your thesis abroad is also an option. Again, this is not always possible, so contact your departmental coordinator for this.
Study1. Europe with Erasmus+
• Studying in countries of the EU plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Macedonia, Switzerland and Turkey
• Standardised and straightforward procedure. Good chance of going where you want to go.
• Lots of options: combined our faculty has over 130 contracts (and counting)
• Every department has its own contracts. If you go abroad on e.g. a Sociology contract, you will have to choose Sociology courses, even if you are not a Sociology student.
• In France & Spain courses are only in the national language. In Germany, Italy and Portugal some universities only offer courses in the national language. Good knowledge of French, Spanish, German, Italian or Portuguese is essential.
• All other countries offer courses in English and in the national language. No need to learn Polish, Swedish…
• You can apply for a grant from the EU (minimum €150,- per month)
Study2. Rest of the world
• We have contracts with countries in all continents
• Some of these are specifically for the Faculty of Social Sciences, others are general RU-contracts
• With the RU-contracts you have to compete with students of all faculties, so you chances of going are smaller than with our own contracts
• Not standardised en less straightforward that Eramus+ because every university has its own rules
• You can apply for a grant from SNUF (Stichting Nijmeegs Universiteitsfonds) and the Internationalisation fund of our Faculty (maximum of €2100,-)
Study3. USA, via ISEP
ISEP is partially funded by the USA-gouvernment and offers the opportunity tostudy in the USA. It also has a standardised procedure, but this procedure is quite time-consuming.
• Choose 10 universities (out of 100)• Selection based on motivation letter• €3175,- (€635,- per month), but this includes 3 meals a day & a room in
a dormitory • Extra costs: mandatory language test (TOEFL), visa, insurances,
service fees, ticket
• You can apply for a grant from SNUF (Stichting Nijmeegs Universiteitsfonds) and the Internationalisation fund of our Faculty (maximum of €2100,-)
Deadline: 8 January, but because of the Christmas holidays: effectively half december!
