What is Naegleria fowleri and how does one get infected by it?

Naegleriais is an amoeba (single-celled living organism) which is commonly found in warm freshwater (eg. lakes, rivers and hot springs) and soil. Only one species (type) of Naegleria infects people which is known as Naegleria fowleri, (Primary Amoebic Menoingoenecphalitis).

Naegleria fowleri infects people when water containing the amoeba enters the body through the nose. This typically occurs when people go swimming or diving in warm freshwater, like lakes and rivers. The Naegleria fowleri amoeba then travels up the nose to the brain where it destroys the brain tissue. Diseases or conditions caused are known as Naegleriasis.

Naegleria Fowleri: Symptoms and Precautions

One cannot be infected with Naegleria fowleri by drinking contaminated water. In very rare instances, Naegleria infections may also occur when contaminated water from other sources (such as inadequately chlorinated swimming pool water or contaminated tap water) enters the nose, for example when people submerge their heads or cleanse their noses during religious practices, and when people irrigate their sinuses (nose) using contaminated tap water.Symptoms of Naegleria fowleri

Initial symptoms of Naegleria fowleri start about 5 days (range 1 to 9 days) after infection. The initial symptoms may include headache, fever, nausea or vomiting. Later symptoms can include stiff neck, confusion, lack of attention to people and surroundings, loss of balance, seizures, and hallucinations. After the start of symptoms, the disease progresses rapidly and usually causes death within about 5 days (range 1 to 12 days). How can Naegleria fowleri be prevented

The only certain way to prevent a Naegleria fowleri infection due to swimming is to refrain from water-related activities in warm freshwater. Personal actions to reduce the risk of Naegleria fowleri infection should focus on limiting the amount of water going up the nose.

go, the fastest growing oil marketing company, signed an MoU with Nuway, a South Korean company at the GO head office in Lahore on August 29, 2019.

In collaboration with Nuway, GO will be setting up charging stations for EV - electric vehicles - in major cities and on highways all over Pakistan.

Electric vehicles are considered to be the future of road transportation and most developed countries around the world have already announced their electric vehicle policies.

It is expected that the sale of conventional fossil fuel vehicles will be gradually reduced and 30 – 50% vehicles will be EVs, running on electric

battery power by the end of 2030. Auto manufacturers in Pakistan are also aligning their production

facilities to EVs and the Pakistan government is actively working on drawing up a national policy on Electric Vehicles.

Use of EVs will decrease environmental pollution and reduce the nation’s fuel import bill.

Since electric vehicles are already becoming a part of Pakistan’s transportation mix, GO intends to join the value chain of EVs by developing a charging infrastructure and battery swapping stations (BSS) across its growing network of retail outlets.
