BACKGROUNDOn the heels of their inaugural 2018 Goal Zero Campaign , Shell Canada’s Sarnia Manufacturing Centre is once more raising funds for a vital local resource through an innovative safety initiative: for every day in 2019 that the manufacturing site does not experience an incident or injury—also known as

“reaching goal zero”—a $500 donation is made from Shell to Pathways Health Centre for Children.

Thanks to the great care that Shell workers and contractors have put into keeping themselves, their workplace, and each other safe, $43,500 has been raised for Pathways. These donations go directly towards ensuring local children with physical, communication, and developmental needs receive quality support and treatments as soon as possible.

In striving to ensure that everyone can safely return home to their families at the end of the day, Shell employees are also looking out for the wellbeing of children that they or their neighbours come home to. Through Shell ’s Goal Zero Campaign, the workers’ common goal of maintaining their safety has thus joined into our whole community’s goal of caring for the safety and health of everyone in our big family, including the youngest and most vulnerable members.

Founded in 1975, Pathways Health Centre for Children is a family-centred agency that primarily serves Lambton County children and youth with physical, communication, and developmental needs. As one of 21 Children’s Treatment Centres in Ontario, we provide a wide continuum of rehabilitation and support services, as well as integrated child care services and therapeutic aquatics programs.

The Centre receives funding from the provincial government, and additional support from partners such as Shell help us close the great gaps between the available funding and the growing needs of our community.

In the 2018-2019 fiscal year, Pathways:

Early assessment, diagnosis, and treatment are crucial when it comes to children’s health; not addressing needs right away can lead to frustration, complication, and exacerbation in the short term and the long term. Through the Goal Zero Campaign, Shell is helping to reduce these wait times and increase our local children’s accessibil ity to timely, quality care .

“Between the therapists, social work, resources,

recreation, daycare, and education, Pathways offers

many opportunities that would not otherwise be available to

Sarnia-Lambton — and not just for children, either.”

MEET THEBEAUCHAMPSThe Beauchamps have been using Pathways’ services since their son, Gibson, was three years old.

“We were very concerned our son was not meeting his milestones,” Valerie Beauchamp recounts, “and his doctor was not l istening to our concerns. Pathways listened—Pathways truly put us on a path to understanding and diagnosing and helping our son through this new world with autism.”

Since being introduced to Pathways, the Beauchamps have engaged in a variety of services, including C.A.C.H.É. Child Care, the SoundStart preschool speech and language program, occupational therapy, speech therapy, recreational therapy, and augmentative communication services. They’ve worked with parent advisors, social workers, service coordinators, and other qualified staff in navigating different programs to provide Gibson with a complete and personalized support system. He will soon be enrolling in the Teen Transition program, a program that supports for youth with disabilities throughout their transition from child to teen to adult.

Some of the Beauchamps’ biggest takeaways from Pathways are not only from our clinical services, but also from the community that they have found here through the parent support groups, webinars, events, and workshops that they attend. Pathways’ financial information sessions, inclusive restaurant outings, and parent pamper nights offer families a chance connect with others that have similar l ived experiences and give each other continuous support.

As well as being a ‘Pathways family,’ the Beauchamps are also a ‘Shell Family.’

Mike Beauchamp is a contract boiler maker that works within Shell . Regarding the Goal Zero Campaign, he says, “I am thankful that Shell recognizes and supports the families and community at Pathways, and I am proud to know that my employer cares about my family struggles and wants to help this community and these kids.”

The Goal Zero Campaign is focused on safety, but what does safety mean to Mike? “It’s care and concern, creating a healthy and stable environment that allows me to work hard and come home to my family every day.” This is a vision of safety that extends beyond lip service and orientation videos, and it is a vision that Shell is making possible through grassroots initiatives l ike the Goal Zero Campaign, which not only incentivizes safety practices in an affecting and effective way, but also promotes this ‘environment of care and concern’ to the greater public. From the workplace to home, this campaign acknowledges how multifaceted pil lars l ike health and safety can be for all of the different members of our community.

MEET THEHOGANSErin Hogan is an employee at Shell whose husband is a pipefitter that worked during the Goal Zero Campaign.

Their son was a past client at Pathways. Erin explains, “He was set up with an Occupational Therapist who came into the school and worked with him on exercises that developed hand strength and proper pencil grip. We also attended a learning program at the Therapeutic pool. This was great because it had been developed to teach skil ls while swimming in the pool; my son looked forward to going and didn’t even realize he was learning. We also had CAP (Central Auditory Processing) Testing done over a couple sessions and the therapists were great: given his young age, they were able to chunk it out and provided fidget toys to keep him focused.”

Erin was happy to learn that Shell would be supporting the organization through this year ’s Goal Zero Campaign. In her opinion, Pathways is one of many services that we are fortunate to have right inside of Sarnia-Lambton. “As a busy sports family with 3 kids and 2 working parents, I ’ve found when you need to go to appointments, it certainly is nice not to have to drive to London or other places for support.”

Of course, geographic distance is not the only barrier that families may face in terms of service accessibil ity. Wait times continue to be a problem in l ight of l imited funding; Erin’s son, for example, had to wait over six months before receiving his initial assessment. Erin believes that this $43,500 contribution from Shell will thus make a “noticeable difference” to families just l ike hers in our community, adding that “getting children assessed and developing a plan to help them with their issues can become a time sensitive issue. If they are struggling at school and don’t get the help they need, they are losing out on learning everyday they have to wait.” The fact that she herself can take action and help combat this issue by promoting workplace safety is a point of pride and a testament to Shell ’s commitment to community care.

“Knowing that my husband’s hours and mine were going towards Pathways and helping other families access their services was so much more meaningful than a trinket for good safety.”

BUILDING A COMMUNITY OF CARE

Caring about our families

Caring about

our children’s

health

Caring about our workers’

safety

...Is caring about ourWHOLE COMMUNITY.

The 2019 Goal Zero Campaign is just one of many ways that Shell Canada’s Sarnia Manufacturing Centre has given back to the local community. The site has a ‘Sarnia Our Way’ vision, which promotes a culture of care to workers and general community members alike.

Pathways continues to expand its programming to meet community needs, all the while enriching and growing its current portfolio of vital services. Much of this growth is possible thanks to invaluable partners l ike Shell . Any community member can make a difference, however; participating in a fundraiser, volunteering your time, or donating to one of our programs goes a long way in supporting families just l ike the Beauchamps and the Hogans.
