BY: MATT LOUNSBERRY Hard work and preparation paid off for Gobles’ competitive cheer team at the 7th annual Holi-day Cheer Bash. The team finished in 2nd place for Div. 4 schools and had the 6th best score of the day out of 18 varsity competitors. “I’m so proud of them, they did amazing,” said head cheer coach Liz Bereczki. “They gave it ev-erything that they had, they left it all on the mat and I could not be prouder.” Gobles scored 202.20, 178.08 and 235.10 in the three rounds of competition, finishing with a score of 607.38, just a couple points shy of Div. 4 winner Bangor (611.00). “We did pretty good, we tried to stay [on time with each other],” said junior cheerleader Bri-anna Gildea. “People were getting frustrated in the beginning, but overall we realize how close we are and how much of a family we are.” The Holiday Cheer Bash was Gobles’ first com-petition and they were excited to host their sea-son opener. “It was comforting,” Bereczki said. “It was nice to be on your own mat, in your own comfort and having your hometown crowd. Gobles tra-dition is our theme this year, so it was awesome to start it where that tradition starts.” The high school gym was overflowing with sup-porters of all the participating schools but it was clear that the majority of the support cheered

on the hometown Tigers. “It was great. It’s always nice being home be-cause everyone gets to come out and you get to hear a lot of cheering. So it’s kind of like a boost for preparing for the season,” Gildea said. The cheer team has been training since their tryouts began on Nov. 10 and had been practic-ing relentlessly two week prior to this event. “The past two weeks we’ve practiced almost ev-ery day, including on a Sunday,” Bereczki said. “Long practices with a lot of tumbling, stunting and changing up stunts to see what’s working and what’s not working. If a stunt is falling you have to figure out what you can do to replace it. And while you’re preparing for that you keep in mind the points that everything adds up to in order to get the scores you want to get.” “It’s been kind of stressful trying to figure out new things [to put into routines],” Gildea said. “We had to rework a lot of things but we tried to stay together and tried to stay positive about everything.” Despite the stress of practices, Gildea said the team does not get angry with one another when mistakes are made and that they are commit-ted to remaining a close family throughout the season. Bereczki called her team “phenomenal” for both its attitude, their work ethic and their commitment to improve every day.

GOBLES’ COMPETITIVE CHEER STARTING OFF STRONG

BY MATT LOUNSBERRY Gobles’ wrestling is starting the season strong following a solid performance in their home invitational last Saturday. The Tigers are 6-1 on the year and wrestling well, but head coach Vince Lindel said the team has a long way to go. “We’ve definitely progressed this year but we have a long way to go before we can call ourselves ‘good’,” Lindel said. “We wrestled real well today, I’m real proud of the guys. We still make some fundamen-tal mistakes. Fortunately, today, it didn’t cost us a whole lot of matches.” Gobles battled Coloma, River Valley, Homer, Unity Christian and Allegan and won four of those five matchups. The lone loss was a 24-45 defeat to Homer, the winner of the invitational. “We knew Homer was going to be fairly decent,” Lindel said. “Not a powerhouse but we didn’t match up real well against them and they were able to [beat] some of our better kids.” Two standouts for Gobles were Alex Wait and Isaiah Smith, who both went 5-0 on the day. Wait, a returning regional quali-fier from last season, returned to the mat after a knee injury had sidelined him for two weeks. “I’m coming off an injury, so I thought I wrestled pretty good for my first meet back. I’m happy with my performance to-day,” he said. “Under a lot of circumstances he prob-ably shouldn’t even have wrestled today and he came out and won five matches,” Lindel said of Wait. “He had a big day.” Smith, a sophomore, didn’t wrestle as a freshman and is getting his first taste of high school wrestling. “He showed a lot of guts. He made some mistakes that you expect a younger wres-tler to make but was able to overcome those,” Lindel said. Gobles began the day by defeating Co-loma by a score of 42-36 and got pins from Mike Myers, Mike Collins, Bran-don Dembenski and Mason Lawson in

the match. The team then tallied six pins against River Valley and cruised to a 42-21 win. “A lot of our opponents today are kind of where we are, struggling to fill weight classes.” Lindel said. “As a whole, the com-petition for us wasn’t that strong.” Following the Homer loss, Gobles finished the day with victories over Unity Chris-tian, 36-17, and Allegan, 39-27. Lawson and Wait each recorded two pins in the final two matchups of the invitational. “I suffered a tough loss [against Homer], but other than that I wrestled pretty good today,” Lawson said. “I had a lot of tech-nique when I was wrestling and I wrestled smart so it was a good day.” The junior was a state qualifier last sea-son and is motivated to being even better this year. He has set the bar high for him-self and his team this season. “My goal this season is to place in state. Last year I didn’t do that, so I’m trying to place in the top 5 for state,” Lawson said. “Over the summer I did a lot of wrestling. I did some summer camps. This year I’m pushing the team more so that we all get better. Our team goal is a district title. It’s going to be a tough goal because we don’t have all the weight classes but I think we can manage it.” Lindel also has concerns for the Tigers as they approach conference matches be-cause their lack of personnel makes filling the weight classes impossible. “The league is really strong. We are prob-ably going to do well outside the league, but inside the league it’s pretty fierce,” he said. “We are forfeiting five or six weight classes in every match we have.” Despite the challenges ahead, Lindel won’t allow the Tigers to back down to any competition that they face this sea-son. “Our expectations are, even though we may have trouble winning as a team, we feel most of our guys are competitive,” he said. “We feel that everywhere we go we can give [an opponent] a good go.”

GOBLES WRESTLING OFF TO STRONG START

GOBLES WRESTLERS ExPERIENCE THE UPS ANd dOWNS

On Jan 3rd the young Tiger grapplers won 4 duals to a single loss while at home. Isaiah Smith and Alex Wait finished 5-0 with Myan DeHaan, Mike Collins, Brandon Dembinski, and Mason Lawson finishing 4-1 on the day. On Jan. 7th the team dropped a pair of league matches to Bangor and Bloomingdale. Indi-vidually the team won 6 of 8 contested matches against Bangor in a 48-30 loss, and won 5 of 8 contested matches to Bloomingdale in a 39-30 loss to the cardinals. Myan DeHaan, Isaiah Smith, Brandon Dembinski, and Mason Law-son all won both matches on the night. On Jan. 14 the tiger wrestlers dropped a 33-28 heartbreaker to Marcellus and a lopsided loss to #5 Decatur 65-12. Mason Lawson and Mike Myers both won a pair of bouts for the Tigers. 7Th GRAdE BOYS BASkETBAll FiNiShES AT ThE TOp OF ThE S.A.C. NORTh!

The 7th Grade Boys’ Basketball Team completed their season with a 10-2 re-cord giving them the best record in the S.A.C. North. The season was filled with many exciting games and valu-able lessons learned. As a team we are able to look back over the season and know that the pieces are in place for much success here at Bloomingdale, however we must continue to improve for that to happen.Improvement was evident from the beginning of the season through the end as each individual player made great strides in their basketball skill sets and academic standing. Basket-ball concepts such as transition, help defense and sharing the ball were dis-played on a consistent basis by the team throughout the season. We ended the season as a very good basketball team which lacked arrogance and still had much room for growth. We began every game expecting to win, yet knew that if we did not play well there was a very good chance we would not win. This occurred once in a loss to Sau-gatuck and was a valuable learning experience. The season included very

exciting wins against Gobles, Martin, and Fennville (twice). Each of these games found us trailing at some point with the game in doubt, but the team responded well to the pressure to fight back for the win.Working with seventh grade boys is akin to trying to get all chickens in the coop to stand in a row. It may hap-pen once, but it is likely because they are sleeping. This group was able to harness their energy and craziness to come together as a team. It wasn’t always easy and included much con-sternation, but they pulled it off. As a coach I am excited for their future and the future of Bloomingdale Basketball. Congratulations to the team on a great season!Players on the 7th Grade Boys’ Bas-ketball Team: Michael Ellis, Robert Boyer, Hunter Underwood, Pierce Manning, Tyler Starbuck, Stewart Yar-brough, Anthony Latham, Aiden Car-dinal, Julian Ly, Saveon Lewis, Devin Gibson, James Dickerson, Steven Si-vak, Joe Finch and were coached by Mike Douglas.

8Th GRAdE BOYS CARdiNAl BASkETBAllThis was an exciting year for the Boys’ 8th Grade Cardinal Basketball program. A year that saw the Cards compete in a middle school basket-ball tournament for the first time in recent years. The cards saw great improvement over the course of the season and should be proud of their hard work. This year’s team included Kohl Tourangeau, Derrick Hawthorne, Ja-cob Hammond, Ryan Harrison, Ca-den Wechsler, Blake Kowalski, Ciff Farmer, Tim Douglas, Eric Gumpert, and Tony Westerhoff. Each student improved this year and as a team worked very hard. Their improve-ment was scene on both ends of the floor. On defense they learned how to defend as a team--guarding more than one player at a time. They be-gan rotating and helping pick up of-fensive players when a teammate got beat. It was a joy to see the improve-ment. On offense they struggled early on running an offense. Spacing and flow were an issue. But by the end of the season no matter who was on the

floor the offense could produce shots and it looked smooth as it operated. It was a great team effort. The team ended with a record of three wins and nine losses. While that kind of record might be easily dismissed, the second half of the season showed the team was improving as they made the picked up two of their wins and were more competitive with teams they lost to. Overall these were a great group of young men who worked hard and wanted to be better as players. The overall success of this season can-not be measured in the short term but in the years to come. What kind of high school players and what kind of young men do they turn into? The goals of our program are to produce players who are coachable and be-come honorable, contributing mem-bers of the community. These young men showed that so far they are doing just that. We all can be proud of their efforts.

CARdiNAlS VARSiTY

wRESTliNGLast week Wednesday, the Blooming-dale Varsity Wrestling team traveled to compete against Gobles. The Car-dinals wrestled really tough and beat Gobles 39-30. The cardinals followed Wednesday up with a 14 team indi-vidual tournament in Bangor on Sat-urday. The Cardinals finished tenth and had a six individual placers, three in which eared medals. Tournament placers were Brandon Smith 7th, Del-fino Salinas 6th, and James Baranoski 5th. Tournament placers earning med-als were Antonio Salinas 3rd, Brian Paquette 2nd, and Jeremiah Durian won the tournament with a 1st place finish! Nice job to all wrestlers for a great week! Cardinals will be in action again this Saturday in Mendon. Come out and support your wrestlers!

VARSiTY BASkETBAllHappy New Year from the Blooming-dale Boys Basketball Family to You and Your Family! We are back at it again this season and I’m Blessed to be coaching our guys once more. After a very disappointing first season at Bloomingdale, we are really looking at making some strides towards getting better...and I feel we have done that! It’s always tough los-ing an All-Conference level player (Lawrence Bigda, 2nd Team All-Con-ference) but we had players get better over the off-season, which helped a great deal.Unfortunately, we are 0-4 (Hartford, Decatur, Fennville & Watervliet) at the moment and this might have people, from the outside looking in, think that, “It’s the same team from last year”. That is not the case. The practices, the effort, the talent, the

skill sets, the basketball IQ and even the play is better than last season but we just haven’t been able to get over that proverbial hump quite yet. We are getting there though and like all things, it is a process. We are very young with 7 sopho-mores on varsity but they are growing up fast because our 5 leading scorers are cur-rently sophomores. We are hoping to turn things around this week with back to back games vs Martin (the Winterfest game) and Zion Christian. Please continue to support Derek Westerhoff, William Mills, Tre’ Jaun Smith, Austin Martin, Tony Gil-lette, Kyle Bodfish, Casey Dolfin, Devon Asberry, Austin Bertuca, Wyatt McNees and Our Seniors Tyler Davis and Sam Siler! Go Cardinals!
