• - An isolated setting where people depend on the authorities of a particular organization

(goffman, macionis,2009)

TOTAL INSTITUTIONS

• All aspects of life of residents are supervised by staff members

• Rules and routines followed and life is standardized

(macionis, 2009)

FIVE CATEGORIES

• 1.- est. to care for those thought to be incapable and harmless

• Ex. – homes for the blind, aged, or orphaned

• (goffman,2009)

RESOCIALIZATION

• The purpose of total institutions is to control an individuals environment to extremely change their personality

(Macionis,2009)

• 2. – est. to care for those thought to be incapable of looking after themselves and is a community threat

• Ex.- mental hospitals

• 3. – organized to protect the community from the dangers of individuals whose welfare is not the immediate issue

CONCLUSION

• AFFECTS OF TOTAL INSTITUTIONS BRING ABOUT POSITIVE CHANGE, SUCH AS REHABILITATION, YET SOME INDIVIDUALS EXPERIENCE LITTLE CHANGE CONTINUING TO LIVE DISASSOCIATED WITH SOCIETY AND THE WORLD.
