History of Golf
Historians do not agree on the exact origins of the game, but most believe it originated in Scotland over 500 years ago. The name is thought to have come from the Dutch word KOLF, which means club.
Play the ball from a teeing area to a hole, a prescribed distance from the tee, in the fewest strokes possible.
An official round is 18 holes.
Purpose of the game
The Course
From the tee, the golfer will hit to an area called the fairway, then to the green where the hole is located. The areas to the right/left of the fairway is called the rough.
Most courses contain obstacles in the rough such as – sand traps, bunkers, water hazards, out-of-bounds and trees.
Scoring
The par designation is the number of strokes that an expert would take to play the hole. It usually takes 2 hits to get to the green and 2 to putt the ball in the hole. A score of 1 under par is birdie, 2 under is an eagle, 3 under on a par 5 is a double eagle, 2 under on a par 3 is a golfer’s dream – hole in one!
