Updated on: 23/Mar/09 VOLUNTEER PROGRAM DESCRIPTION GOLF ASSISTANT COACH ECUADOR BRIEF PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The beautiful Andean views of Ecuador make of this destination one of the favorite ones for golfers to share their knowledge on the game with children and spend a fantastic time in this magnificent country. Based on a beautiful country club on the outskirts of Quito in the Valley of Los Chillos, in a stunning 10-hectare area- volunteers will be assisting golf coaches at the 9 hole course. Volunteers will be working with children from ages 6 to 16 years old in the afternoon program from Tuesday to Friday. Participants, along with the coaches will be organizing practice sessions, warm up routines, fitness exercises, practice drills and more. Volunteers will help the children improve: chip, bunk, put, swing techniques, drive, long irons and course management. PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS *Enjoy living in the capital city of Ecuador. This beautiful city will take you back through 500 years of history, cultural sites and places you will never forget. Quito has colonial churches, structures and historical sites of hundred of years such as La Iglesia de San Francisco, La Plaza de la Independencia, the mighty Basilica and more. * You can’t miss the Teleferico, this is a sky tram that takes passengers up the flanks of the Pichincha Volcano to the top of Cruz Loma. The view form here is something spectacular. * Adjacent to the Old City in Quito, El Panecillo is a large hill on top of which a large statute of the Virgin of Quito sits and is visible from miles around. From the top there are marvelous views of the whole city and the volcanoes. * Just outside of Quito is where measurement were first made that proved the shape of the Earth is in fact an oblate spheroid. Commemorating this, there is a large monument that straddles the equator called Mitad del Mundo- you cant miss stepping on both the northern and southern hemispheres. *Take a weekend tour to and hike the Cotopaxi volcano. The Cotopaxi National Park is located in the “Avenue of the Volcanoes” a breathtaking place. Hike to the glaciers and enjoy the view!

The club provides services to children and adults. They offer classes for different sports for all ages. All the teachers at the club have a teaching certification and have experience in their field. 2. SERVICES THAT THE ORGANIZATION/INSTITUTION PROVIDES (DESCRIPTION) The club offers various sports programs such as tennis, golf, volleyball, squash, football and others. The club’s facilities include a 9-hole course, driving range, tennis and football courts, a swimming pool and more. Volunteers can use the facilities during their free time when they are not coaching.

VOLUNTEER INFORMATION 3. How many volunteers can the Project employ monthly? The club can have up to 3 volunteers at the same time. 4. Has the organization received volunteers in the past? Some of the staff members at the country club speak English. They welcome foreigners and are extremely open to have volunteers help in the teaching of golf to the children. 5. If it has received volunteers in the past, please write since what month and year: N/A 6. Are there any special features to which the volunteers have to pay attention to when

working at this project? (Religion, illnesses, extra-vaccination, etc) The club requires volunteers to know the rules of the sport in order to help with the assisting coaching. 7. Are there any requirements to attend this programme? A strong desire to help golf students to learn the sport. 8. The project receives volunteers all year round? No, the club closes for holidays. 9. volunteers: December 15 to January 10. 10. Is there a minimum amount of weeks volunteers can work at the project? 1-week minimum 11. Is there a maximum amount of weeks volunteers can work at the project? No maximum 12. Please give detailed description of tasks and duties of the volunteer: Volunteers will be assisting the main coaches. Volunteers will be part of all practice sessions, helping with warm up routines, fitness work and drills. You will be assigned specific duties by the coach you will be working alongside them doing various activities such as drills to improve skills and techniques to better the play. Volunteers will also help with the organization of local tournaments and competitive matches. You will work with the group as well as on an individual basis with the players helping them improve their swing technique, chipping and putting, driving and course management. Volunteers will be working with children in the afternoons; children attend golf classes when they finish school. Each session approximately last 2.5 hours. Volunteers are welcome to help as well during seasonal tournaments. 13. Indicate the times and days the volunteer will be working in the week: Volunteers will be working from Tuesday to Friday from 3pm to 5:30pm.

(from the north area of Quito) 16. DESCRIBE THE SORROUNDINGS OF THE PROJECT (country side, urban, town) The Valley Los Chillos lies southeast of the center of Quito. Once the city’s market garden, it still holds a few undeveloped spots. It is a place with a mild climate. Sangolqui is the largest city in the Valley it has a small but inviting park and church. Sangolqui gets busy on Saturdays due to the market. Also in the valley of Los Chillos you can find thermal pools at El Tingo and La Merced (approximately 40 minutes from Quito).

ACCOMODATIONS AND MEALS 17. Type of Accommodation? Volunteers will be staying at a home stay. All home stays are located in good residential neighborhoods of Quito. Home stays have been selected after an application process to make sure they have everything you need. 18. Are meals included? Lunch and dinner is included at the home stay.
