Lent is the period of preparation in the church liturgical year leading up to Easter. The traditional purpose of Lent is the preparation of the believer--through prayer, penitence, almsgiving, and self-denial--for the annual commemoration during Holy Week of the death and resurrection of Jesus. Conventionally, it is described as being 40 days long, though different denominations calculate the 40 days differently. The 40 days represent the time that, according to the Bible, Jesus spent in the desert before the beginning of his public ministry. This practice was virtually universal in Christendom until the Protestant Reformation. Some Protestant churches do not observe Lent, but many, such as (Disciples), Lutherans, Methodists, Presbyterians, and Anglicans, do. Prayer Team To Distribute Pretzels This Sunday The Prayer Team will distribute pretzels at this Sunday’s worship services, as an encouragement for all of us to make prayer a priority during Lent. If you’re looking for something to “give up” or sacrifice during Lent, the Prayer Team suggests giving up some of your time to spend extra time in prayer. The pretzel was an early Christian Lenten food. Roman Empire Christians made a special dough, which they shaped into the form of two arms crossed in prayer. This reminded them that Lent was a time of prayer and penance. They called this bread bracellae, which translates “little arms” (crossed in prayer). From this Latin word, the Germans later derived the word brezel, from which comes our word pretzel. Ash Wednesday Worship Planned Ash Wednesday worship services are planned for 10:00-10:45 am and 6:30-7:15 pm March 9 in the Sanctuary. HMCCC’s elders have arranged these special services. Brief messages will be shared by Linda Herrin in the morning and Cindy Miller in the evening. Communion and ashes will be offered. Ashes are a sign of our penitence for our sins. Lent Begins With Ash WednesdayLent begins March 9 with Ash Wednesday. This practice was virtually universal in Christendom until the Protestant Reformation. Some Protestant churches do not observe Lent, but many, such as (Disciples), Lutherans, Methodists, Presbyterians, and Anglicans, do.

Prayer Team To Distribute Pretzels This SundayThe Prayer Team will distribute pretzels at this Sunday’s worship services, as an encouragement for all of us to make prayer a priority during Lent. Baby Dedication and All-Church Potluck Celebration Luncheon Planned

Mary and Bob Everitt and Christopher and Julie Hanes request the pleasure of your company at the Baby Dedication of granddaughter/daughter Loralie Barbara Hanes at 11:00 am in the Sanctuary and the All-Church Potluck Celebration Luncheon at 12:15 pm in the Fellowship Hall on Sunday, March 13. The family will provide the meat (brisket and turkey), dessert, and drinks. Everyone else is asked to bring a vegetable dish or salad. RSVP for the luncheon by March 8 to Mary at 816-645-9599 (cell) or 816-765-1806 (home).

All-Church Spring Breakfast ScheduledAn All-Church Spring Breakfast is scheduled for 7:30-11:00 am Sunday, March 20, in the Fellowship Hall. This year, this big breakfast celebrating the beginning of spring (March 20) is replacing the Palm Sunday breakfast. A breakfast will not be held on Palm Sunday because of the scheduled all-church luncheon preceding the presentation of Jesus Christ Superstar that day.

Forgiveness Café Draws NearThe Forgiveness Café is planned for 6:30-7:30 pm on four Thursdays of Lent: March 24, March 31; April 7; and April 14. This special event would be wonderful for you if you are having trouble forgiving someone who has hurt you or someone you love; however, it will also be beneficial for everyone. Douglas Hundley will lead the Forgiveness Café. He began a small-group study about forgiveness called The Forgiveness Café in 2006, and since then, has led forgiveness studies in several churches in Kansas City. Doug has Bachelor and Master degrees in Journalism from the University of Kansas. He also has a Juris Doctor degree from KU and has practiced law for several years. He is an elder at Second Presbyterian Church in Kansas City, Missouri. Before joining Second Church, he was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Wellington, Kansas. Doug and his wife, Molly, live in Leawood.

Sermon Series To BeginA new sermon series will begin on the first Sunday of Lent, March 13. The series will focus on “10 Questions That Are Transforming The Faith,” as posed by Brian D. McLaren. It has been said that “A new reformation is taking place in Christianity. Brian McLaren is one of its leading voices.” The first question facing today’s church, to be addressed March 13, is “What is the overarching story line of the Bible?”

All-Church Luncheon And Jesus Christ Superstar Scheduled

An All-Church Luncheon (12:15) and Jesus Christ Superstar (1:00) are scheduled for Palm Sunday, April 17, at HMCCC.

What a wonderful way to begin Holy Week!

Notes From MaryJo Simmons 2/11 Mission Trip To Haiti...After the world’s best oatmeal and toast, and after our devotions of a Creole prayer from the book, God Is No Stranger, we squeezed into our tiny van for a “quick” visit to the construction site of the church we visited two days ago. It took us an hour to get there on the same difficult roads....Jordan certainly had to demonstrate his skill when squeezing through several tight spots with an inch to spare on either side....Anyway we spent about 20 minutes at the Evangelical Church of Salem, observing the two dump truck loads of rock and lime, a pile of re-bar, and the 40 foot length of 5+foot deep ditch that has been dug by hand during the last 48 hours. The church members certainly are working industrially to begin their new church. It seemed to take us much longer to get to CONASPEH because Jordan drove us by the airport, the area behind the docks, past the first U.S. Naval Base, the hospital, the street of auto parts stores, the street of pharmacies, and lots more earthquake damage, and lots of USaid trucks hard at work, and parks filling with the debris, crisscrossing streets on more than one occasion. We arrived just in time for Michael and Suzanne and I to observe our Food for Children money in effect, as 93 different children received overflowing Styrofoam containers of chicken legs (with that Costa Rican sauce), rice and beans, pickleeze, and tomatoes....There was so much food in each container that I am assuming that after their own lunch, these children will be taking what remains in their container home to feed others in their respective families. The other four of our group from a church in New Jersey met with the nine children and their parents that the church sponsors. They were brought to CONASPEH and were waiting for our group. Reports are that both the children and the members of our group found this to be very enlightening and satisfactory encounter. Back again in two vans, this time we went to a merging church with a school of about 80 students who were waiting after their school day was over just to greet and sing to us. This is where we left all of the combined school supplies brought to Haiti by our group—about 30 pounds of pencils, pencil sharpeners, ball point pens, and many lined packets and note pads of paper. Lunch was at the same Sun Spot service station as yesterday.  This time we all had chicken sandwiches (and Costa Rican sauce) before going on to an unbelievable, destitute orphanage, which I cannot possibly describe in this document. The 40 children of all ages and sizes sang to us in English. There, we left them all of our hygiene kits from HMCCC. We were exhausted, physically and emotionally, when returning to Walls for a great lasagna dinner with pickleeze. Devotions ended our day.

Circle NewsThe Hope Circle asks that you keep those who are unemployed or underemployed in your daily prayers. Often this situation can lead to a sense of hopelessness, however we know that God does answer prayers. Hope Circle will be posting frequent updates in the Information Room on Area Job Clubs including meeting times and locations as well as dates that speakers will be at the various job clubs. Job Clubs can be a great support system providing encouragement as well as assist job seekers in networking and techniques to finding employment. A good resource online is www.jccc.edu/jobclubs. We also would like to thank everyone who donated to the hats, scarves and gloves drive for CAC and GAP during Dec, Jan and Feb. These organizations were thrilled to receive these from HMCCC. Winter is not quite over and there are many still in need of these warm items, so if you still have them, we'll take them. And when the season draws to a close these items typically go on sale, so if you are able, please pick up a couple extras as we will be collecting them for the next cold weather months. For any HMCCC member who has an immediate family member actively serving in the military, please let us know his/her name, address, birthday. We would like to start sending notes and cards of encouragement to them from our church family. We greatly love and appreciate the dedication and courage our servicemen and women provide to keep our country free. If you have questions or would like to join our circle, please contact Sue & Ron Hickman, Fran & Chet Cousins, Jana Schartz, Gene Martin, Suzanne Thomas.

The Compassion Circle baked and took cookies to the Fire Station on Red Bridge Rd. and the Police Station on Hickman Mills Dr. We also sponsored three community members to come to the dinner and play on February 18. Compassion Sunday is April 10.

Koinonia Class Continues New Study SeriesThe Kononia Class is continuing the new study series by J. Ellsworth Kalas entitled “OId Testament Stories From the Back Side.” Each week the class watches a 10-minute video on one of the Old Testament stories. Kalas opens up new possibilities of insight into selected stories by entering them through a unique starting point creative retelling, or the eyes of a minor or unsympathetic character. The class meets 11:00-00 am-noon every Sunday in Pastor Terry’s office. All are welcome to join the class any or all weeks

Music Theory Class ContinuesThe Music Theory Class continues at 6:30 pm Thursdays. This first-level class is being taught by HMCCC Director of Music Ministries Ric Jefferson.

Youth Academy BeginsHMCCC’s Youth Academy is beginning this month! Actors, vocalists, and instrumentalists are welcome! Students must be 18 or younger to participate, receiving a free lesson each week. Out of respect to Director of Music Ministries Ric Jefferson’s time, however, students are required to show up on time for scheduled rehearsal time. There is a sign-up sheet outside the Music Room. Please sign-up for the time that works best for you. Space is limited.

Women’s Spring Draws NearThe Regional Women’s Spring Retreat draws near. It will be held March 11-12 at the Tall Oaks Conference Center. The keynoter will be Rev. Suzi Goldt, pastor, Countryside Christian Church. The cost is $65. If you are interested in attending this retreat, please contact Fran Cousins.

Giving Trees Grow At HMCCCHave you noticed the “Giving Trees” growing at HMCCC? If our community has a need, we need to know about it.  So, if your committee, class, or circle has a need, please write it on a postcard and then pin the postcard on the giving trees (located by the Red Bridge Sanctuary entrance and in the Information Center). Please be as specific as you can about your need.  For example: if coffee is needed for Sunday morning, pick up a postcard and write the brand name and amount needed, as well as your name.  Also, as you go by the tree, check out the cards.  If you can help, take the card and bring what is needed and leave it under the tree.    Lin Barr will check the trees and make sure that the donations get to the correct persons or locations.  If your are not able to post your need or if you have any questions, please call Lin Barr (816-331-1348) and leave a message.  She will be more than happy to help you. No matter how big or small the need, let’s all work together to help each other out. Thanks for your support.

Regional Board Reps NeededPlease contact Pastor Terry if you are willing to represent HMCCC at one of this year’s Regional Board meetings, scheduled at 6:30 pm on the fourth Monday of April, July, October, and

December.   The April meeting will be at Overland Park Christian Church.
