April Good News 2019 Our ministry vision for the Virginia Annual Conference is “to be disciples of Jesus Christ who are lifelong learners, who influence others to serve.” From Pastor Liz Without Easter, the Christian faith is a waste of time. That's what the apostle Paul says: "If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins.” (1 Corinthians 15:17). The reason for this is that Christ's Resurrection not only gives us hope for eternal life, but because God used the Resurrection to confirm that what Jesus said in his earthly life was true. Jesus said he would rise from the dead. If he hadn't, who would have taken his teachings seriously thereafter? "But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead," Paul says (1 Corinthians 15:20). The resurrection was God's stamp of authenticity on Jesus, proclaiming, "Yes, Jesus is my Son. Yes, he has overcome death. Yes, what he told you is true. Trust him! Follow him!" There will be special worship opportunities at Chestnut Hill UMC during Holy Week and on Easter Sunday. These include: Palm/Passion Sunday Palm parade and worship on April 14; Holy Thursday Worship – April 18 at 5:00 pm; Easter Sunday Worship – April 21 at 10:30 am, and our joint Cantata at Timberlake UMC, April 28, at 11:00 am at Timberlake UMC. There will be Sunday School, but NO worship service on the 28 at Chestnut Hill UMC. We hope you can join us for all of these and on Easter Sunday and bring a guest to join in celebrating Christ's resurrection. ~Blessings, Grace and Peace, Liz Holy Thursday (also called Maundy Thursday) Early Christians began to regard the Thursday of Holy Week as a special time for participating in the Lord's Supper. The day came to be called "Maundy Thursday," a reference to Christ's giving a "new commandment" (John 13:34) to His disciples. The word "maundy" comes from the Latin word for "commandment." Holy Thursday(also called Maundy Thursday)

Early Christians began to regard the Thursday of Holy Week as a special time for participating in the Lord's Supper. The day came

to be called "Maundy Thursday," a reference to Christ's giving a "new commandment" (John 13:34) to

His disciples. The word "maundy" comes from the Latin word for "commandment." On Holy Thursday, April 18 at 5:00 p.m., we will gather with others for a special service of Holy Communion, as we connect with those who shared that first Lord’s Supper.

Easter SundayApril 21 at 10:30 a.m.

Easter is the most important holy day of the Christian faith. Its roots are tied to the Jewish Passover, which was the season in which Jesus was executed. Passover is when Jews remember how God liberated them from Egypt. For Christians, the more proper name is Resurrection Sunday, and it marks the discovery of the empty tomb and the return of Jesus from death. It is the liberation of all humans from the consequences of our stubborn refusal and inability to follow God. The Easter Service is not some sort of a stand-alone thing. It is part of a series of events, the devotions of Holy Week, that the early Church treated as one worship service. It starts at the 'Holy Thursday' or 'Maundy Thursday'), which marks Jesus' mandates to serve, to take Holy Communion, and to love as He loved. On that day Jesus was

betrayed and arrested. Good Friday is the day of Jesus' execution, the first day of Jesus' death The Easter season isn't just Easter Sunday. It's 50 days long, and the last of those days is Pentecost, marking the birth of the Church and the coming of the Holy Spirit with power.
