Message from Monsignor René Mathieu: (1) The gifts of Epiphany have always aroused the interest of believers. Gold is believed to symbolize the royal kingship of Christ, frankincense to indicate his divinity, and myrrh to symbolize the mortal human condition that the Son of God assumed at his conception and birth. Because myrrh was used in the Middle East to embalm corpses, it was understood to refer to Christ’s coming passion, death and burial. Ever since I served my first

Christmas Mass as a third-grader, I have been particularly interested in incense because the priests carefully trained me how to light the charcoal on which the incense burned (so I wouldn’t burn down the church)! In biblical times, Sheba (Yemen of today), had a monopoly on the frankincense trade, and the substance was worth its weight in gold. In our day, trees in the Horn of Africa provide most of the world’s supply. Top-quality incense sells for about $100 a pound in the West, though lower quality can be bought for much less. As a student of the liturgy, I have come to appreciate that our Catholic ceremonies appeal to all the senses, including that of smell. (2) Several years ago, we introduced FORMED as a free gift for parishioners! Formed is the Catholic Faith on-demand, something like a Catholic Netflix, giving parishioners access to the best Catholic teaching videos, books, movies & audio talks – series such as Catholicism, Symbolon, Lectio, the Fr. Gaitley programs and much more. With FORMED, you can view programs at home, in small private groups or in a large group. The parish code (7XMFPP) allows parishioners to gain free access to all its programing. Our parish website (www.GoodShepherdParish.us) is frequently updated. You can find information at that location about many of our ministries including St. James School, our faith formation programs, the two Catholic cemeteries; almost a year’s worth of weekly bulletins, includ-ing the most current one; scripture readings for weekday and Sunday Masses; photo albums of parish events; ways to grow in one’s spiritual journey; information about pre-paring for and celebrating the seven sacraments in our parish; the parish schedule of events; links to Catholic radio, the diocese, the American bishops, the Vatican, and much more. Facebook & Twitter are other ways to communicate with us. Several parishioners have mentioned how they were pleased to receive storm notices about our Mass schedule and other updates via our parish app (application). Finally, some 350 parishioners are current users of our Good Shepherd Parish app. You can download this app at myparishapp.com or search on your phone’s app store; or text app to phone number 88202. This app can also download to iPads and iPod touch for devices supporting iOS 10.0 or later and various Android devices as well. (3) Shepherds of Hope: Our parish capital campaign continues. Quarterly statements will be mailed this month; note that these are not invoices but a statement of where things stand on your 3-5 year pledge. The “Inv.” on the statement does not mean “invoice” but “invaluable gift”! Counting 648 pledges or one-time gifts, we reached a total of $1,382,224 on December 19 (the most recent update before this bulletin went to the printer). Thanks to all who have supported the campaign thus far. Pledges & gifts grow steadily week by week; the totals have in-creased every week since we began the campaign. Projects will begin as soon as adequate cash has been collected. Currently, we are firming up quotes for stained glass restoration work at St. Joseph Church and seeking quotes for window replacements at St. Margaret Church. As payments on pledges gradually add to the cash totals, this will allow us to make our way through the project list in the priority established at the start of the cam-paign. Additional pledge envelopes are available near church doors. (4) The cold and flu season is upon us so I urge church ministers including ushers, servers, and ministers of the Eucharist to make use of the anti-bacterial solution available at all locations. Parish-ioners should not drink the Precious Blood if there is any concern over spreading illness. For the same reason, parishioners may want to avoid physical contact during the sign of peace, but a gesture or a few words is also appropriate. (5) Thank You of the Week: There were nearly 250 deaths in the parish during the past year. Preparation for and cele-bration of the various liturgies, attention to mourners, music ministry and the services of parish staff including cemetery personnel make this collaborative ministry a significant focus of Good Shepherd Parish. Volunteers who prepare and serve funeral luncheons are an important part of this pastoral care for the bereaved. Devoted parishioners also see to accurate record keeping. On December 17, members of the administrative staff served a luncheon to volunteers who work so hard week after week who express condolences and prayerful support on behalf of the parish for those who mourn. Thank you!

PARISH LITURGIES

Good Shepherd Parish The Epiphany of the Lord January 5, 2020

We try to list the name of the priest who will cele-brate every scheduled weekend Mass. However, this schedule may be changed without notice.

SHEPHERDS OF HOPE PLEDGES: For parishioners that have not yet made a pledge, we need your HELP! Please pray about taking that step. There should still be cards at each church or the parish office, so fill one out or take it home for prayerful consideration. Bring the pledge to

the office/mail to: Good Shepherd Parish, 271 Main St, Saco. NOTE: Any Checks/Cash can be dropped in the collection basket, in-side a blank envelope, AND must have a name & ID number in order to receive credit on a pledge. Check payments should be made out to: Good Shepherd Parish with “Shepherds Of Hope” in the memo line.

Current totals: 648 household gifts * $1,382,224 * 69% of goal

We have created a live link with the Shepherds of Hope logo on the Homepage of our website (https://goodshepherdparish.us/). Just click the logo and it will take you to where you need to be to get started. If you need assistance, call Amy Loring at the parish office: 282-3321x105. Please be aware that with the convenience comes a price. WESHARE does charge a fee on each transaction as follows:

* ACH withdrawals from bank account - the fee is a flat 10 cents per transaction plus 1%, calculated as follows: For example, a $50 donation will have a charge of 50 cents, plus 10 cents, for a total fee of 60 cents. The $50 donation results in a net donation to the parish of $49.40.

* Credit Card / Debit Card Transactions - the fee is 3.25%, calculated as follows:

Using the same $50 donation example as above, the 3.25% transaction fee will amount to a charge of $1.63. The $50 donation results in a net donation to the parish of $48.37.

Since the Credit/Debit card fees are more than double ACH fees, we do prefer use of ACH. Please consider this when deciding on your source of payment. Thank you for your generosity.

SHEPHERDS of HOPE PLEDGE PAYMENTS: Please note that if you intend on using ACH or your Credit Card for payment and/or installments on your Shepherds of Hope pledge, you must do so by signing into the parish’s online giving service: WESHARE. Please do not include your bank account information or credit card number on the pledge card. Simply go to the parish website to sign up and make a payment or set up recurring payments. If you do decide to use WESHARE please mark that on your pledge card so we handle the pledge properly. Thanks so much.

Notes regarding Masses/Mass Times:

During the winter months please check weather listings for school opening delays, cancellations, and parking bans in each church community. Cancellation of the daily Mass is tied to these community advisories as well! Consult the parish website and/or app during storm conditions for updates on closings. Our decisions are based on safety for all concerned when snow & ice

create hazardous travel conditions. Overnight winter storms make cleaning our parking lots and priest travel in the early morning hours,

very difficult. Thank you for your understanding.

Epiphany tradition: Use chalk to write 20 + C + M + B + 20 above your door; the letters are the initials of the Magi and the inscription is a prayer that

Christ bless the home & stay with those who dwell therein throughout the year.

SPEND TIME WITH SCRIPTURE: The Epiphany of the Lord

“We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage.”

The star revealed the way to Jesus, and their gifts to the newborn revealed his true identity – (his royalty, divinity, and eventual death). We all experience moments of epiphany: moments when darkness is dispelled and we see the

world in a new way, moments when we find the courage to travel outside the safe borders of our normal lives. On this feast, consider where the star is leading you and how Christ is being revealed in

your life. (From LTP Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families)

However, smaller amounts donated by check to the collection basket that are not in Offertory Envelopes are not recorded, but simply are scanned and deposited to the bank. You must then rely on your canceled check and bank statements, as record for your donation. If you would like to receive Envelopes, please contact [email protected].

THANK YOU ALL in advance for your cooperation and generosity throughout the year! We wish you all God’s Blessing, Peace and Joy

this Christmas Season.
