THE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE by John & Carolyn Melstrom

Wow!! What a change to the Trailblazer newsletter! After two weeks square dancing in Mesa, Arizona, and having only limited access to the internet (our resort wanted $9.95 per day), I got a chance to look at the handiwork of our new newsletter editors, Hal Anker and Rod Anderson. The new

format for the newsletter is very impressive. Readers will find new fonts, more pictures, special events and happenings in the feature “Swing Along the Trail”, and much more. Of course, the big change is the change from a newsletter every two months to one every month. And, to throw in a few more twists, the newsletter will be issued two weeks after our monthly dance instead of the week before our dance. So, we are trying to speed up the process, creating a January and a February issue going to press at almost the same time. One nice thing about the new publishing timeline will be that news will be more current – no more talk about a dance that took place two months earlier. Another positive will be shorter President’s messages due to the need for more immediate material and less rambling. Members who are reluctant to write articles may now flock to sign up for the office of President! Trailblazers and dancer friends were treated to a great weekend by Bronc Wise. Memories of his fall dance undoubtedly inspired many to return for even more fun. The dance attendance at all sessions was our highest in a long time. His lovely wife, Fia, filled in many times so no square dancers were left sitting out a tip. Bill Haynes comes to town in February. Hopefully I will be prepared since I spent two weeks dancing at his workshops and classes in Mesa. While there, I had the pleasure of running into former Trailblazers and other dancers who I have not seen for a long time. In addition I met many new friends and spread the word about our Trailblazer dances.

See you on the dance floor.

Bill Haynes

Trailblazers February 2012 Caller

Bill Haynes of Mesa, Arizona was born in Texas and moved to New Mexico in 1957. Upon completion of basic square dance lessons in 1959, he danced for two years before beginning his calling career when he taught his first class. Ever since Bill has been pursuing square dance calling and promotion of the activity.\ Bill taught school for a short time before fulfilling his Army ROTC military obligation by serving as a Platoon Leader in Korea for 2 years. He returned to Las Cruces, New Mexico in 1971 to resume both his teaching and calling careers; while teaching school he received a master's degree in Education Administration and his calling ranged from Basic through C-3B. Bill has attended several caller seminars with Bob Fisk, Melton Luttrell, Marshal Flippo, all of whom are well known callers. He has been the featured caller at many festivals in the United States and has an especially good following in the Southwestern states - Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, California, and Arizona. In 1984 Bill moved to Mesa to open up a new RV park, Carriage Manor, calling full time. He also calls for other RV parks in Mesa. In the summer months he calls at the Vallecito Resort in Durango, Colorado. Bill is a member of both the American Callers Association and Callerlab.

Saundra Bryant

Trailblazers December 2011 Caller

"And I'm the one with the low voice". Whenever introductions take place, this is the statement she makes. Saundra’s deep voice is only one of her many assets of her chosen career. Saundra began square dancing in 1960 and has been behind the microphone since 1979. Swersie Dumetz Norris, Saundra’s Girl Scout

leader, close family friend, and first caller to whom Saundra square danced, provided calling tutelage as well as a plus group for Saundra’s first calling endeavors. To further her calling knowledge, she attended her first Callerlab in Kansas City, Missouri in 1980. There, she became familiar with calling’s finer points, and she also developed close friendships with many of her peers. Saundra called at various local conventions before calling at her first National in Detroit, Michigan in 1982. Her pursuit of calling did not diminish her desire to dance. She joined Bill Heimann's tape workshop group and to this day still sets aside one night a week to dance with that group

allowing her to continually improve her dancing ability by dancing to other callers as well as occasionally dancing to herself which she considers one of her greatest challenges. Saundra's accomplishments are on-going. She is on the calling staff for AACE (Academy for Advanced and Challenge Enthusiasts) and various festivals. Saundra lives in the Chicago area and calls dance programs from Mainstream through C-4. Saundra is a Callerlab member and has called at numerous conventions and in many states as well as Canada, Denmark, Germany, Japan,

TRAILBLAZER Publishing Change Starting in 2012 TRAILBLAZER will be published monthly. Publication date will be approximately 2 weeks after a Trailblazers Square Dance weekend rather than the weekend before a monthly Square Dance. In cases when the monthly Square Dance is dark, a newsletter will not be published. The new publishing schedule will be launched for a 1-year trial period. By implementing the use of currently available electronic tools and messaging, conveying necessary materials for the TRAILBLAZER can be expedited, hence, allowing for a shorter publication
