The 2013 Minnesota Legislature charged the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) with providing grants "for distribution in equal amounts to each of the state's county fairs to preserve and promote Minnesota agriculture". Funded by AGRI (Agricultural Growth, Research and Innovation Fund), the grant program is distributing $1 million in state fiscal year 2016, in equal amounts to each of the state’s county fairs. Thanks to this grant, the Goodhue County Fair is happy to have the following event and improvements to the fairgrounds during fair week.

“Animal Talks” wildlife display **NEW**

At least 15 species of exotic animals will be on display Thursday thru Sunday from 9am - 9pm. Anticipated animals include camel, kangaroo, tortoises, dingo, several different birds, llama and others. This display is free of charge to the public.

The Mitchell Marionettes

Presented from the stage of the Mitchell’s own custom-made 1911 Reo Circus Wagon, “Haybale Hullabaloo” will use the appeal of the American circus to introduce farming in a fun new way. From zany puppet acts that are pure circus (Pow-Pow Powers, the Human Cannonball) to others that are more agricultural (The Cluckettes Precision All-Chicken Drill Team), the show will mix laughter and learning, 3x a day, every day of the fair. Emcees for “Haybale Hullabaloo” are 4 farm animals: Patty the cow, Grunt the pig, Lucy the lamb and Peking the duck. A puppet-making workshop based on those characters will also be held during the fair. Children and their parents will be invited to attend a workshop free of charge and to make and color their own paper-bag hand puppet of their choice: the cow, the pig, the lamb or the duck. www.mitchellmarionettes.com

Goodhue County Historical Society

Visit the Schoolhouse and see if you are smarter than a 1940s 8th grader! The Goodhue County Historical Society is offering a family-friendly game that combines “Jeopardy!” and “Are You Smarter Than a 8th Grader”. Can you pass all 5 subjects and get to the top of the class? Participants will answer questions taken from actual 1940s middle school tests as they try to score enough points to pass each subject and graduate. Are You Smarter than a (1940s) 8th Grader will run at least once per hour. Make sure to also visit the Schoolhouse for a variety of

activity sheets and coloring pages from the 1940s & 50s.

Friday, August 12 @ 3:00 pm “Icons on the Farm – Silos and Windmills” Travel into rural Minnesota and learn about these forgotten structures of the farm. From the earliest wood stave silos to the modern (low oxygen) Harvestore, Doug will share images, stories and information on the importance of these structures to the agricultural vitality of the Midwest. Along with silos, Doug’s program also looks at the evolution of wind power. The earliest were simple wooden windmills which accessed water resources to the farm. Today wind power is an important source of clean electrical energy.

Friday, August 12 @ 5:00 pm “Farm Equipment of Yesteryear – Tractors and stuff” Step back in time when the family farm was one of the most important pieces of American Agriculture. Doug will take you on a visual tour of the older equipment that has become obsolete in the modern age of farming. His pictures and stories will be enjoyed by all who remember their youth growing up in rural America.

Sunday, August 14 @ Noon “Heart of the Farm – Barns of Minnesota” Enjoy a photographic journey with Doug exploring the greatest of all rural icons, the barn. From the early days of statehood to the era of agribusiness, barns tell a story. This story will bring you back to the farm and explain the importance of our rural roots and how the barn has evolved with the changes in rural life.

Sunday, August 14 @ 2:00 pm “Prairie Skyscraper – Grain Elevators” Enjoy a visual journey through the Midwest looking at these most magnificent structures on the prairie. From some of the nation’s largest grain elevators near

Explanation of Ribbons

At the Goodhue County Fair, the 4-H competitive exhibits are judged according to the Danish system where everyone receives an award based on their “score” for their entry.

The open class competitive exhibits are judged according to the American system. The items in a lot are judged against each other. Every lot may receive only one blue (1st), one red (2nd), and one white (3rd). The judge has the final say if one is given in each lot.

When it comes to Champion and Reserve Champion, each division may handle this differently. But a general rule may be to award a champion and reserve champion in each class or age division. The Best of Show may then be chosen out of all of the champions in the division. Award of Merits and Honorable Mentions may be awarded to blue ribbon winners that were considered for champion. Again, each division and judge may handle and define these special awards differently.
