K/1/2 News

What would you say your favourite book is?

For speaking and listening K/1/2 shared their favourite books. They shared their favourite pages, story lines, who first read it to them and why it’s their favourite. The audience asked some very good questions throughout question time.

Here are some of our favourite books.

For maths we were using counters and blocks to do addition. Look at some of our sums.

There were hardly any students at school on Friday due to Rugby tryouts and cross country. The remaining 3-6 students joined us for some lawn bowls. Here is Jarod, Enara and Charlie pointing to their scores. Lucy found a spider!

3/4 News

This week students will focus on learning and revising their multiples of 7. This will assist them with the multiplication and division focus during independent activities this week. Students will be learning strategies to solve more complex multiplication problems. In measurement, we will be working towards improving our understanding of time and how to use a calendar.

Last week students enjoyed watching the remainder of the movie BFG and have outlined their arguments about what they like better, the movie or the text. Students will continue to build on their introduction and

write their three paragraphs for the body of their persuasive text.

5/6 News

Congratulations to all our Year 5 and 6 students who represented the school in various sporting events last week. I am very proud of all your efforts. Special mention must go to Joshua who made the zone cross country team to compete at the Riverina carnival and Tevita who made the Riverina rugby union side.

Each morning we continue to complete vocabulary, grammar, writing and reading activities. I am getting a little sad that we have nearly finished our class text Unreal by Paul Jennings. All the students have thoroughly enjoyed reading the series of short stories and making predictions.

Patterns and algebra are our weekly focus in maths. By the end of this week, I hope students will be able to continue, create, determine the rule and describe number patterns in their own words.

For technology, the students are planning and shooting a short film. They are in charge of writing the script, deciding the camera angles, locations and editing. I cannot wait to see their finished movies once editing has taken place.

Rehearsing for KROP is a major priority this week, as our audition in next Thursday.

Mortimer Shield - Boys

Thursday 23 May

Driving forward in the tackle, making all the metres you can. Doing the best to make your team proud. Dylan, Dusty, Tevita, Jordon, Kadon and Charlie travelled to Jubilee Oval in Griffith on Thursday to participate in the Mortimer Shield gala day.

Their first game was at 11:45am and they faced St Pats Catholic School and lost 24 – 0. In their second game, they played Griffith Public’s No. 2 side. In a one sided contest and they beat them 32 – 4. After the results were collated, the boys were happy to have made the final. In final game, they played Griffith North. In a tightly fought contest, it was nil all at halftime. Unfortunately, a few run away tries from North in the second half put them in front and we were defeated 18 - 6.

Mortimer Shield - Girls

One of the highlights of our sporting calendar is the Mortimer Shield gala day.

On Thursday 23 May Charlotte, Annabell and Haley travelled to Jubilee Oval to play league tag with the Griffith Small School’s No. 1 team.

Bang! St Pats Coleambally kicked off the ball to begin our first game. Right from the kick off, our team was in control and gained an early lead. At the end of the game, everyone was puffed and the final score was twenty to nil. It was a great start to our day and boosted our confidence.

In our second game, we were supposed to play Lake Cargelligo but at the last minute, they forfeited and we won. To make up for the game we missed, we played a friendly game against the other Small School’s side. Even though it was a friendly game, we were still happy to come away with a win.

The final game of the day was also our hardest. It was against a very well trained Griffith East team. The end score was 24 to 4. Overall, we all had a great day and enjoyed playing with students from other schools. We would all like to thank our parents for transporting us, Ms Sim for organising it, Mrs Liddicoat for organising us on the day and Mrs Star for being the team manager.

Cross Country

The loud noise of the gun goes off and many people sprint in their age groups on the dusty cross-country track. Last Friday was a lovely warm and sunny day perfect for running. Many students were cheering on their friends in the large crowd of people on the hill. The lines at the canteen were long with students rushing to get a snack after their exhausting race.

At the Griffith Zone cross country carnival, there were 16 schools from around the area. Everyone got a sticker at the start of the race. We were not allowed to take them off until we finished our race. The day started with walking the track and then the first race was the 8 and 9-year-old girls and then boys. The second races would be 10 year olds, they also had to complete a 2km course, and then it was 11 year olds turn.

The 11 year old boys had to do a 3km course, which was two laps. One lap small and the second one much bigger. After that, it was the last race before the presentation. The 12/13 year olds. This age group also had to run 3km.

After the final race, it was time for the presentation, which you had to stay at if you were one of the top 6 in your race. I placed 4th in my 11 year old boy’s race and gained selection in the Zone Cross Country team to head to Gundagai in Week 7 for the Riverina Carnival.

Other students who placed in the top 20 were Austin, Dylan and Charlotte. Every student who represented Goolgowi at the Zone cross country ran extremely well and never gave up. They should all be very proud of their efforts.

Riverina Rugby Union Trials

Three long hours in a bus and we finally arrived at Wagga Wagga to see if we could be selected in the Riverina rugby team.

There were around eighty hoping to make the team. At the start of the day, we were split

into four teams. Charlie and I were placed into a team together. Jordon and Kadon were put together and Haley was in a team on her own.

We warmed up and completed some training drills such as tackling and decision-making. Finally, it was time to start playing some games and trying our best to impress the Riverina selectors.

Charlie and I played against Haley’s team first. We did some good hit ups and made some good metres.

Later in the afternoon, there was a possible versus probable game. Haley and myself played in the last match. The aim of this game was to give the selectors another chance to see us play.

By Tevita

Congratulations to Tevita who after a long day of rugby union was selected in the Riverina side as a forward. He will now go on to represent the Riverina at the State Championships at the end of August at St Mary’s in Sydney.

Thank you to Robertson Bus Company and David Williams for transporting the students to Wagga and allowing them to experience this great opportunity.

Vegetable soup is on the menu this week.

There will be no more lasagne to order, just spaghetti bolognese.

Convincing Win To Rabbitohs In Round 1

Last fortnight’s winners of the Knockout, Narrandera, were simply outclassed by Goolgowi in Round 1 of the ProTen Cup on Saturday. The Rabbitohs piled on 28 unanswered points at Rankins Springs and in turn went straight to the top of the ladder

Goolgowi had a great deal of solid defence to get through in the opening stanza and this possibly set the foundation for keeping the Lizards scoreless for the entire match.

Billy Hale was able to make the first line break of the day, and went on a 60 metre run before the evergreen John-Michael Cahill was unstoppable and able to find the line next play.

Goolgowi were almost in again 8 minutes later after receiving successive penalties and enjoying some good field position, but a forward pass was ruled in the last play. They didn't have to wait much longer though and Anthony Star barged over 15 minutes from the break, with Billy Hale adding the extras for a 10-0 lead.

Johno Morris was denied a try moments later for being offside after Goolgowi swooped on a loose ball and fullback James Fallon put in a smart kick.

The Rabbitohs had more defensive work to get through in the back end of the first half as Narrandera hammered their line for three sets in a row but the score would remain the same heading into halftime: GOOLGOWI 10 NARRANDERA 0.

After a Narrandera player copped ten in the bin in the first five minutes of the second half, The Rabbitohs were able to capitalise on the overlap and although denied earlier Johno Morris was able to pick up a 4 pointer this time and see Goolgowi up 16-0 after the conversion.

Six minutes later hooker Laurie Sandford made a 10 metre dash for the line and score under the posts untouched. Billy Hale made no mistake picking up the extra 2 and have Goolgowi looking set for victory at 22-0 with just over 20 minutes remaining.

10 minutes later Narrandera were pressing the Goolgowi line again after repeated sets but an intercept and a 90 metre bolt to the try line by Billy Hale for his second wrapped it up for the Rabbitohs. He landed his 4th goal for the day, made it a personal tally of 16, and pushed the Rabbitohs’ lead out to 28-0.

Three minutes from the siren the Lizards crossed with centre Wade Williams but with a fumble over the line the full time score would be GOOLGOWI 28 NARRANDERA 0.

New forward Nick Johnson had another solid performance in the front row picking up the thee votes from the panel, while Ethan Byrne earned the players’ player mug with another tough display with his equally tough back row partner Nathan Sanders, as prop Ben McRae gained some valuable yards also. Both wingers Damien McPherson and Vaughn Higgins were safe in defence, as well as impressive in attack, while Brad Turner and Alex Brown orchestrated the backs and forwards brilliantly. Replacement forwards Rory Brown and Dane Halliburton had an impressive impact, as did brothers Guy and Brett Weber. Simon McClure and Harry Robertson added spark as well when injected into the play.

The big win has now set the stage for a Grand Final replay in Narrandera at 12pm Saturday when the Rabbitohs take on The Rankins Springs Dragons.
