GOPHER FITstep Pro Pedometers: Physical Education Tips “An essential teaching tool for student self-reflection, assessment and program data collection. Perfect for any physical education program or classroom teacher.” ~ Jessica Shawley Overall Setup Guidelines: *Also refer to GOPHER’s FitStep Pro instructions included in the box. 1. Turn pedometer on and affix safety leash. 2. Number each pedometer with permanent marker on the inside and outside (outside will rub off so inside is essential). 3. Assign each pedometer a number in the computer system 4. Upload class lists and assign a student to each number *VERY FAST & EASY! No Matter What: (whether you use a computer to download or not)... 1. Assign each student a pedometer number – save as a list. 2. Post the class pedometer list for daily quick reference & attendance. 3. Place pedometers in an easily accessible storage system. *I use the GOPHER QuikID 64-spot Pedometer Storage System (see picture) and hang on wall with large, plastic “Command” Strip Hooks. Even though I do not have 64 students, it allows me to fold it up nicely at the end of the day. Some Examples of Set-up I’ve used: Class list on pocket chart & strung up. DailyRoutine:STARTofClass• Hanguppedometersandclasslistongymwall.• Turnonlaptopandopenupsoftwareforfirstclassoftheday.• Afterstudentsenterclassroom(elementarylevel)orexitlockerroom

(secondarylevel)theytaketheirpedometerandputitonattheirplacementpoint.Theyshouldknowtheirspotthatismostaccurate(30-steptest).

• Studentsresettheirpedometer.*Studentscandouble-checktheirplacementpointweeklybydoinga30-steptestontheirown.

• Studentsarenowreadyforwarm-ups.Atminimum,mystudentswalkthegymvisitingwhilemusicisplayingoranotherwarmupisoffered.

• Whilestudentsarecompletingthewarm-uptheteacherlookstothepedometerlistandstoragesystem.Anyremainingpedometersarestudentswhoaremarkedabsent.Takeattendanceandmoveontostarttheday.

DailyRoutine:ENDofclass

• Findatimeframethatworksbestforyou.Irecommendallowing2-3minutesforaclassof35studentsusingthreedownloadingdocks.

• Afterlessonclosure,dismissstudentstodownloadstation/cart.• StudentsmakesinglefilelineandfillintotheopendownloaddocksOR

assignstudentstoacertaindock.Example:No.1–10usedock#1,No.11-20usedock#2,andsoon.

• Afterdownloading,studentswrapthesafetycliparoundpedometersotheydon’thangoutandplacepedometerbackinstoragesystem.Pedometersarenotallowedinthelockerroom.

• Teacherchecksallpedometersarereturned.Thehangingsystemallowsforaneasyvisualchecksoyouknowyoucandismissclass.

• Afterdismissal,checkthedatafromlastclassandseehowitalignsyou’reyourlessongoals.Getprogramreadyfornextclass.

Studentsfinditisnoteasytoprovetheirparticipationwithdataiftheydon’thaveapedometeron.I’veneverhadtodothis.

3.“Onceon,neveroff”–Pedometersonlycomeoffattheendofclass.Studentscanstillchecktheirdataand/orshowtheteacherwithpedometeropenoffwaistband.4.Pedometersarearequiredclassroommaterialcheckedouttoyou:Ifabusedormisusedthisschoolpropertymustbereplaced(aschoolfineisissued).OverallDailyClassGoal:Onmostdays,IstrivetohavestudentsachievealevelofMVPAthatis50%oflessonactivitytimeormore.
