Goteo is an open-source social network for crowdfunding (based on donations & rewards) as well as distributed collaboration (services, infrastructures, microtasks and other resources) to encourage the independent develop-ment of creative and innovative initiatives contributing to the common good, open knowledge.

It’s also a platform for collective investment focused on open projects with social, cultural, scientific, educational, technological, or ecological impact that generate new opportunities for the improvement of society.

Goteo offers a range of innovative digital services including training, advocacy and “Cloudfunding”, a social investment pool for match-funding with contributions from public and private institutions, integrated in a value system based on collective returns for the development of the Commons.

What is Goteo

Page 4: Goteo from crowdfunding to crowdvocacy

4

An open standard funding policy model

Under Goteo’s conditions, each project is expected to adopt licenses like Creative Commons for its valuable content, to open up its data or its designs.

Goteo is the only platform with Open Licenses Integration

Goteo has developed the clearest and best articulated framework I have come across so far to break down not only the needs of prospec-tive projects, but, equally important, what are they supposed to give back to the community.

The crowd beyond money: In Goteo, apart from monetary contributions, people collaborate offering services, material resources, infrastructure or by partici-pating in specific microtasks needed for the development of projects.

Fostering transparency: Each project that wants to be crowdfunded through Goteo must give specific details about where the money collected will go. Coupled with the two-rounds scheme, it makes even very successful campaigns responsible in their use of the extra money obtained. Further-more, Goteo establishes a legal agree-ment signed by both the promoter and our organisation, which guarantees the production of archives, activities, products and services associated with the project as described in their crowd-funding campaigns.

Trustworthy and advantageous manage-ment model: The organisation that manages Goteo is managed by a non-profit foundation, Fundación Fuentes Abiertas, designated as a public-interest organization and officially listed in the Register of Foundations of the Span-ish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports (nr. 1438). This management model offers some tax-deductible benefits for both co-financers and promoters.

Collective return: encouraging open culture, Goteo seeks social return on investments. That’s why, aside from individual rewards for backers, all cultural and social initiatives must contribute to the Commons.

Why are we different

Page 6: Goteo from crowdfunding to crowdvocacy

6

Training: More than 2,000 people from cultural, social, academic, entrepreneur-ial, environmental and many other areas have been trained and advised through 60 workshops. We call it #learnbyfunding!

Community of local nodes: Goteo is grow-ing as a community of communities, a network of local, independent, inter-coordinated nodes which serve to localise the digital, contextualising it. The first one has already started in the Spanish region of the Basque country, supported by Basque government. The second one is in the region of Andalusia. The third one is in Barcelona, supported by the city council. More nodes to come in France and South America.

Public / Private matchfunding: Goteo is a pioneer in promoting the involve-ment of public/private capital in the development of open culture projects, through a bottom-up process designed for the citizenship to be the measure of this support, which means a more fair process. Through our calls for ‘Cloud-funding capital’, each euro a project receives from a person is matched by another euro from institutions within this social investment fund.

Open source: The core code of Goteo is freely available under a GPL3 license, allowing its use as well as participatory development of the tool:

• Intense support and an active community: Our team loves to help! Goteo provides opportunities for individuals and organizations with non-generalist initiatives, or who have difficulties accessing resources, to help launch projects that will later become sustainable and durable. We make our assess-ment based on ethics and professionalism, fostering cross-pollination, solidarity and cooperation among users.

Lesson 1: Today’s backers are tomorrow’s entrepreneurs; we call it #learnbyfunding!

• Culture of generosity: Achieving one of the best statistics in the crowd-funding sector, i.e. a 70% campaign success rate with higher than average donations of €45 and 1 out of 3 backers not wanting any reward in return!

Lesson 2: The more open the process, the bigger the social impact!

• Open advocacy: Goteo creates an ecosystem for the Productive Commons and Peer Collaboration, based on openness and transparency. Beyond disruptive benefits for creative communities, we also see crowdfunding as a tool for raising awareness and facilitating a deeper democratic engagement, creating open standards for the economy.

Lesson 3: Crowdfunding plus crowdbenefitsequals #crowdvocacy!

Our 3 Main Pillars

“ In Spanish, Goteo means “drop by drop”, and describes an irrigation method for arid zones that permits optimum water

usage – possibly the most important innovation in agriculture.

In Goteo.org, resources – monetary and otherwise – take the form of “drops” from the crowd, a natural way to fertilize

initiatives and help them grow, while also favouring collective digital empowerment.

Goteo’s mission, far transcending its funding purpose, is also to recruit and train entrepreneurs them make their initiatives more open/shareable/actionable. They can also learn how to benefit from other, previous open initiatives, building upon prior efforts, existing knowledge, etc.

Open Data/Government and new modes of Internet-enabled citizenship, Open Design, Open Science, Open Ecology, and Open Business Models are new fields for social entrepreneurship to explore.

Only through these explorations can a new type of entrepreneurship rise: the social + open entrepreneur (SOE).

Irekia: department dedicated to open government and civic participation within the regional government / administration of the Basque Country.

What happened

David Cabo is a programmer and member of an NGO that promotes the right to access information within Europe.

David attended a workshop organized by Goteo to intensify the opportuni-ties available in opening up projects, building communities around them and mobilizing resources.

David, realizing the potential in using the platform, decided to work with Goteo to publish and mobilize support for his initiative. Goteo helped define the project (from an open perspective) and advised David on how to launch

and conduct the fund / resources raising campaign.

The campaign was strategically designed to run in parallel to the dead-line the national government promised for working on a Transparency Act.

The campaign was a success, raising 150% of the funds needed to develop the application. More than 150 participated, and 80 more offered voluntary collabo-rations including translation and data mining. The campaign itself was featured in many national media outlets.

Impact

40 days later, the initiative David proposed was up and running in a beta version, and under a free license so everyone could use/improve/replicate the code (sharing the code is just one exam-ple of how initiatives can be made open through Goteo).

Goteo was invited to a meeting on open data/open government organized by the regional government of the Basque Coun-try. As a result

As a result of the visibility obtained by the platform created through the initia-tive David promoted in Goteo (called: “yourrighttoknow”), a new foundation was created by the working group that gathered around the project: Civio

The regional administration got involved and promoted the idea that other regional governments should start financing and supporting open projects run by the citi-zenship, that contribute to the commons.

6 months after the launch of “yourri-ghttoknow”, Fundación Civio promoted yet another project through Goteo: an application for in-depth research of data on the fires that burnt more than 100 hectares in Spain from 2001 to 2010.

Once again, the campaign was a great success. As a result, the Ministry of Agriculture made all data related to fires in Spain accessible and available in a format that can be used for further research and policy-making in fire prevention.

A year later: David is in charge of a weekly segment about open govern-ment on a Spanish national TV programme called “el Objetivo” (la Sexta). Prime time!

Who’s behind Goteo

Unlike other crowdfunding platforms, Goteo is an initiative managed by a non-profit foundation (Fundación Fuentes Abiertas - Open Sources Foundation) in order to ensure that the core principles of openness, neutrality, transparency and independence are maintained throughout its development and management.

The Foundation also promotes an experimentation laboratory through practical workshops and co-creation processes which are applied in turn for the benefit of the common good and open knowledge looking for social, environmental and ethical impact.

The current focus of this network is “Connecting Culture, Communities and Democracy” for the creation of a common agenda on advocacy issues surrounding culture as a change and democratic regeneration agent.

Since 2013, this programme has aimed to promote and establish the basis for creating and propagating civic innovation spaces (Citizen Labs) in Latin America, supported by public institutions as spaces for conceiving, prototyping and launching cultural and entrepreneurial innovative projects.

From translations to distributed communication, even developing parts of software and data visualizations, Goteo has an emerging network of volunteers and open enthusiasts supporting the daily work of our core team.

In addition, we have an increasing number of recurrent backers, whose main motivation is the same: to help open projects and shared resources grow, even when they’re from very different areas or take different shapes. All of these are great signs that we’re on the right track.

This way, investing organisms can give wings to some of their areas of concern and their programs in an innovative way, as well as to their political obligations and social responsibilities. And yes, we have the right experience-based knowl-edge to assist them throughout the process.

Through our cloudfunding program we have helped fund cultural and educational innovation projects with the International University of Andalusia, open entrepreneurship initiatives through the #CoFinancia call of the Government of Extrema-dura, as well as health projects through #Crowdsasuna promoted by Innobasque, the innovation agency of the Basque Country.

We also have to acknowledge the support of the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) and other major institutions in the fields of educa-tion and social responsibility.

In addition, we’re part of ambitious programs and strategies at the European level.

What we have ahead...

We think we can revolutionize (even more!) the way people support projects online, changing the paradigm of crowd-funding to one of more openness, social responsibility and effectiveness around the user’s experience (how they fund in relation to others) and motivation (why they fund in relation to society). In order to achieve this, we have more ideas, awesome plans and ongoing processes, such as:

Alternative payments/currencies Rather than just making the platform available in other countries curren-cies, we’re talking and aligning with experienced partners to help give alternative and social currencies a real role in crowdfunding. Imagine people backing projects through time-banking, or using open, digital coins obtained from other platforms - or, a personal wallet for socially responsible spending! We’ve imagined these things already, and now we’re looking for ways to put it in practice and make it happen.

Page 31: Goteo from crowdfunding to crowdvocacy

31

Improvement of open data and social tools/badgesAnother field of improvements has to do with reinforcing the platform as social network and open data forge of collaboration, where users are not only recognized by their monetary support but also skills and areas of knowledge, and campaigns by their performance and impact. We’re plan-ning a badges system, as well as more stats and indicators of activity based in shared data which could be nicely visualized. This way, open crowdfunding could be also a gate for more constructive learning, economic opportunities and community building. And more fun, also! :)

Agile Crowds, Agile FundingMerging scrum and co-creation methodologies with open crowdfunding dynamics, to design a comprehensive, instructive lab context that gathers together the entire process: conception, design, prototyping, and financing for project development. We call it Crowd Incubation...

SMART CROWD INCUBATIONAn open, modular set of P2P methodologies

and tools for: · Cooperative development of civic innovations · Standardized measurement of social impact

What if we had an agile way to embed crowdfunding and crowdsourcing into

hackathons, on one side...

and into social innovation / open knowledge product and service delivery on the other?

Page 33: Goteo from crowdfunding to crowdvocacy

33

“ Growd is a centrifugal process based on a modular cycle to incubate projects from the “Idea stage” to the “Delivery stage”, passing through a co-creation phase, crowdfunding processes that incoporate matchfunding to multiply impact and stakeholders involvement, agile and scrum methodologies for the development process and a transversal module for impact tracking.

”We have packed it all together. We think it would be very valuable as part of a digital - and physical (why not?) - platform to incubate open and commons-based projects. And - to promote hybrid economic and sustainability models.

We need individuals and civic organizations, but also public and private entities of all stripes, whose common focus is an interest in the development of a collective, open source, knowledge-based society.

So if you’re an institution that want to... • Redefine your approach to social responsibility: We can work with you in creating your own call for open projects in a specific area or location, assessing throughout the process and ultimately enabling a successful campaign to add value and solutions for the common good.

• Develop tools for digital social innovation: If you can share resources and priorities with us, we would quickly increase our ability to provide more tools and technical improvements at the crossroads between collec-tive funding, community building and distributed collaboration.

• Support world-changing institutions: We’re ready for big commitments with leading global partners which share our vision: that not only is open-ness good, but each day it is more critical for creating better societies and social development. Maybe we can multiply resources and help more open projects grow together?
