DEAR PARTICIPANTS, GUESTS AND SPECTATORS OF THE VI INTERNATIONAL PLATONOV ARTS FESTIVAL!

Within a short span of a few years, the festival has earned a reputation of a major regional cultural event, whose venues draw art lovers from all over Russia and abroad. Over 200 thousand people have visited its shows so far — the tickets sold out long before the performance dates. Such an ardent response on the part of the citizens of Voronezh and its visitors reveals how great demand for high art is and how close and understandable its ideas are to ordinary people. 2016 festival edition will see an unprecedented number of premieres, reflecting an unimaginable variety of genres and creative solutions. This celebration of art, which promises to be truly unforgettable, will converse in eighteen languages of the world.

There are more than a few surprises in store for the audience. For the first time in Russia, a world-famous Paris theatre will present its opera production. The opening of a new venue — the Green Theatre in the central recreation and entertainment park — will take place within the festival programme. I am convinced that the festival has all the makings of a successful future: its own style, aesthetics, combining innovation with timeless classics and a moral compass, set by the genius writer. What makes the event truly “Platonov-like” is its unique atmosphere of friendship, mutual understanding and freedom — all that our prominent countryman used to refer to as “lifelong creation of good”.

I sincerely wish the VI International Platonov Arts Festival success and creative longevity, and its participants, guests and spectators — unforgettable impressions, bright emotions and high spirits, always derived from a contact with high art! Let these festive days be full of exciting meetings and artistic discoveries!

— Governor of the Voronezh Region Aleksey Gordeev

DEAR FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES!

Once again, we welcome all the guests and participants of our festival. It lives and, despite all the difficulties of our time, continues to evolve. This year, on the festival grounds we receive theatre actors, musicians, artists and writers from twenty three countries represented by Europe, Asia, Africa and North America. Platonov Arts Festival is known in the farthest corners of our planet, and is undoubtedly one of the most important points of crossing, recognition and convergence of different cultures, ancient traditions, and modern art. We are happy that we are introducing the people of Voronezh and other spectators to the fine examples of art and literature and, of course, the continued learning and understanding of the creative legacy of Andrey Platonov.

This year, we emphasize the theatre programme, which includes modern Russian and European theatre in its entire variety of shapes and styles. More than ever all areas of the festival are multi-faceted in form and content.

Interntational Platonov Arts Festival is the main annual cultural event for the city and the entire region. I hope that we are lucky with the weather, since many festival events are held outdoors, on squares, streets, parks, and suburbs of Voronezh. I hope that both the participants and spectators of the VI Platonov Arts Festival will receive the best experiences and impressions.

Welcome!

— Artistic director of the Festival Mikhail Bychkov

DEAR FRIENDS!

International Platonov Arts Festival has been gaining strength and momentum with each passing year. This talent show has become a powerful symbol of high art, in many respects defining the contemporary cultural image of Voronezh as that of a modern, dynamically developing city, comfortable for those who live in it and attractive for those who enrich its culture.

The Festival enjoys immense popularity as one of the most large-scale, exciting and high-profile projects. For six years, it has been accomplishing an important mission of bringing together outstanding, enthusiastic and truly dedicated artists. It has involved new participants in a creative dialogue and put our city on the cultural map of the country.

It should be noted that the art-event never stops expanding the geography of its participants. Nor does it cease to amaze us with its premieres and new theme scenes. The best Russian and foreign production companies will acquaint the Platonov Arts Festival’s spectators with the global art trends. Such a high concentration of unique talents, inspiration, intellect and mastery is bound to create a special atmosphere, to saturate the city with spiritual ambience of good, perfection and creative generosity. I have no doubt the festival’s current edition will live up to most demanding audience’s expectations.

For a few days in June, the whole city becomes one cultural space, where everybody can find something to their liking. Let the festival become a celebration of art for everyone. I wish you all happy discoveries!

— Mayor of Voronezh City District Alexander Gusev

Platonov was imitated with a certain success, he was manifested, but it all still was external. To the extent with which the writers of that wave were realized, they have absorbed as many features and style – and were forgotten. Now it dissolved in the indirect form...

And when you’re trying to read not how Platonov wrote, but what he wrote, there appears this inexplicable difficulty of reading, some fall, the gap between pleasure and pain. Due to, perhaps, the solemnity of the moment, and, maybe really, I do not know any other writer at any time or era who would manage to transmit empathy, compassion and love for a living with such force and intolerance. Pity and love so strong that they are almost equal to murder. Love is something inexpressible, in that lies most of its content. About love, but not write with love... Secrecy, sympathy expressed in Platonov’s texts, sympathy towards a person, a living being, doomed to suffering and death, is expressed with such force that you start to suffer and die yourself in the same way that heroes suffer and die, and it is not an area of sweet imagination and empathy from any other reading of good literature, but something more, something almost pathologically impossible. <…>

Maybe, at the level of a feeling and great suffering comes the meaning of what Platonov said. So, proclaiming him after fifty years the writer of the twenty-first century and the writer of the future, I am not only happy for the fate of a genius that can be finally recognized, but I also fear the future in which he will be understood. But then, he willbe as essential to us as air. <…>

Platonov’s fate is known to the reader in its main parts — namely, birth in the proletarian family in Voronezh, full interior young adequacy of revolution and change, and then, after the weak “blacksmith” poems, all of a sudden inexplicable genius breakthrough. Genius that was never learned, but at the same time immediately recognized. How nevertheless brilliant of a critic was our leader and teacher, Joseph Stalin. He did not miss a single genius. He wrote across Platonov’s name with bold red colour: “Bastard”. He also called Pasternak to find out the scale of Mandelstam. Each time he reacted with the same level of attention as in Dneproges. But maybe the counselors were also trained. Platonov did not sit, Platonov died, catching a tuberculosis from his son, who brought it from concentration camps. Did Platonov die or was killed? He lived for half a century. Exactly half a century in the twentieth century. And another half a century we did not have him. Some important half is determined by the life of this man. The sense and the spirit of his texts was so ahead of its time, that neither censorship nor ideological bans have not stopped his prose in our minds. And today, greeting Platonov in the twenty-first century, this part of taboo is more important. <…> For my generation Platonov arose in the thaw, the year must have been fifty-eighth, along with Faulkner. And still I can not separate these two books in my mind — "Seven stories" and the blue book "In the beautiful and violent world". Everything that could be printed in there was printed. Good, knowledgeable and understanding people filled both finger-thick books with maximum that could be allowed. We hunted for these books for a month, asking every day whether they arrived. And finally caught. Platonov binge has begun. But it was a binge in its pure form. Platonov’s books were liberated from the ideological content. Only tenderness, only love, only children. And a whole new language. And that, so to speak, children’s edition of Platonov completely merged with our childish minds, and yearning for fresh, unclaimed style fused young stylistic hunger of the emerging authors ...

The festival programme features works within four fields: “Theatre”, “Music”, “Visual Arts” and “Literature”, presenting world art in a variety of genres and traditions such as drama, choreography and opera, visual and synthetic theatre, classical music, jazz and world-music, painting and graphic design, video-art and installations, prose, poetry and dramaturgy. We pay close attention to the uniqueness of the projects and try to facilitate as many Russian premieres as possible.

The festival, bearing the name of an outstanding writer of the XX century Andrey Platonov, has been held in his home town since 2011. A special “Platonov Programme” comprises the performances based on the writer’s works as well as the art that is in sync with Andrey Platonov’s spirit and epoch. The festival venues include all the theatres and concert halls of Voronezh, its exhibition halls and galleries, most of which are located in the city centre, not far from one another.

Besides conventional auditoriums and exhibition halls, parks and squares, the festival’s “geography” encompasses extraordinary, unique in their natural beauty or history venues: the park in front of Princess Oldenburg’s Palace in Ramon, where music concerts take place; art-centre “Commune”, situated in the former printing house of the “Commune” newspaper (Prospect Revolutsii, 39 B), the very one Andrey Platonov used to write articles for, or the

lake side of the White Well Quarry, which has become a traditional venue of the World music concerts.

The festival also offers the city a number of free events. The most spectacular ones are the Theatre parade down the Revolution Avenue, with stilt-walkers, mime-artists, dancers and musicians from all over the world, and the performances of street theatres.

Owing to the rich festival programme, whose events run for two weeks without a break, summer in the city is heralded by a grand celebration of art.

In a span of five years the art forum has become one of the most large-scale and eventful arts festivals in Russia. In 2015, Voronezh was awarded the title of the “Cultural Capital of the CIS” in many respects due to Platonov Arts festival, whose events drew over 70 000 spectators from different cities.

“RHINOCEROS”, a play by one of the founders of the Theatre of the Absurd Eugene Ionesco, was produced in the playwright’s home country Romania. Ionesco and Wilson were acquainted: they met in Paris, where the famous absurdist offered the American director to stage one of his plays.  It took Robert Wilson almost 45 years to put his mind to the idea and, eventually, he chose one of the playwright’s most complicated works.

ROBERT WILSON is a cult figure in thetheatre, one of the world’s foremostvanguard theatre artists of the XXXXIcentury. He creates on stage hismathematically precise universe atthe junction of the drama theatre andcontemporary art, dance, MIME andshadow theatre.

“Deafman Glance”, produced in 1971 in Paris and enthusiastically received at Festival d’Avignon, brought Robert Wilson worldwide acclaim. In 1976, in collaboration with a composer Philip Glass, he created the famous opera “Einstein on the Beach”, after which he started working more and more often in Europe.

In the past years, the director has been collaborating with Berliner Ensemble theatre, where he has created a number of productions including the famous “Shakespeare’s Sonnets”. Recently, the Theatre of Nations in Moscow saw his “Pushkin’s Fairy Tales” performance, which became a sensation of the Russian theatre season.

Robert Wilson is a holder of numerous awards in theatre and arts, an honorary member of several universities in the USA, Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters (France).

THE NATIONAL THEATRE OF CRAIOVA  With over 165 years of its history, “Marin Sorescu” National Theatre of Craiova is one of the world’s greatest theatres by the awards and honors obtained over the years at the most important international festivals like Festival d’Avignon, Edinburgh Festival, Wiener Festwochen and others from all around the world, being present more than 150 times during the last 25 years and receiving 48 prizes.

The “Marin Sorescu” National Theatre of Craiova witnessed great productions directed by famous theatre makers such as Silviu Purcarete, Peter Brook, Eimuntas Nekrosius, Robert Wilson and Lev Dodin.

The National Theatre of Craiova — a member of the European Theatrical Convention (CTE) since 1995 — has become the first theatre from a Central and East European country entering this international association’s guild. The famous British magazine “The Stage” compared the National Theatre of Craiova with Brecht’s Berliner Ensemble and Peter Brook’s Royal Shakespeare Company. It is the only theatre in Romania to be awarded the «Cultural Merit» Order in the rank of Commander.

The performance contains all the ingredients that the wilson brand has us accustomed to: impressive glowing backgrounds, rapid changes of color; spectacular videos, expressive and extravagant costumes, interesting decor elements. Yet if all these were to be expected, it was the intellectual approach of the play that surprised us, and very pleasantly too

“BIANCO SU BIANCO“ is a moving theatrical clowning production performed by actors with circus background. The plot follows two characters — an actress and a stage technician — and carries the audience into a surreal universe and the world of memories. The performance epitomizes Finzi Pasca’s theatrical vision — delicate and light, abounding in twists, turns and nuances; his inimitable style combining drama, buffoonery, circus and acrobatics. Danielle himself calls this technique “theatre of the caress”.

The production stars a Brazilian actress Helena Bittencourt and a Dutch clown Goos Meeuwsen.

DANIELE FINZI PASCA is a renowned Swiss director, clown, choreographer and actor. The holder of Hans Reinhart Ring, the highest distinction of Swiss theatre, the Swiss Award in the Show Business category, the American Drama Desk Award and many other accolades.

He has created and directed productions for Cirque du Soleil, the closing ceremony of the Torino 2006 and Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games as well as the opening ceremony of the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Games. He directed the operas Aida and Requiem, by Giuseppe Verdi, at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia, and created Donka — A Letter to Chekhov, a production in collaboration with the Chekhov International Theater Festival.

COMPAGNIA FINZI PASCA was founded in 2011 as a result of the union between Teatro Sunil (Danielle Finzi Pasca’s project) and a production company Inlevitas. The company builds on the aesthetics of the so-called “theatre of the caress” — a theatrical technique based on “the invisible gesture and the state of lightness”.

“PLEXUS” is a fabulous example of a “physical theatre”, a dancing portrait of Japanese ballerina Kaori Ito, created by a French choreographer Aurélien Bory. The word “plexus” comes from Latin and means “intertwining”. Later on, the ordinary sense of the term used in the context of anatomy meant “the network of nerves or blood vessels”. The very definition of the word refers to the muscles’ inner mechanics: the impulses from the nervous system and the flow of oxygenated blood, as well as the external mechanics of dance: intertwinings of movements, driftings, bodies and body parts.

“The way I intended to portray Kaori Ito mostly implied portraying her body, — says Aurélien Bory. — I’m not interested in an anatomical study, but in the memory of a body substantially shaped by dance; I care about the innermost marks her art has carved in her living body. How has her every cell taken part in this wonderful network of muscle tissue? How has dance shaped, sculpted, and eventually expanded or crippled her inner space? Plexus deals with a dialogue between Kaori’s inner world and the outside world. Isn’t this dialogue one of the quintessential features of the universal human experience? Is this also the hub of our frailties?”

Plexus received the International Applause Joan German Schroeder of FAD Sebastià Gasch Awards in Barcelona.

AURÉLIEN BORY is a French choreographer and director, founder of the Compagnia 111. He develops a “physical theatre” singular and hybrid, a crossbreeding between different, converging fields in the performing arts — theatre, circus, dance, the visual arts, and music. His interest for sciences influences his esthetic. Aurélien Bory’s works are driven by the question of space and leans on the scenography.

His shows toured all around the world, Russian audience saw one of its productions in 2012.

Aurélien Bory is the recipient of the Créateur sans frontières trophy (France), FAD Sebastià Gasch Awards (Spain), nominee for the “Best new dance production” to the Olivier Awards (Great Britain).

KAORI ITOis a famous Japanese ballet dancer and choreographer, the recipient of lots of trophies and awards. She collaborated with such choreographers as Philippe Decoufle, Angelin Preljocaj, James Thiérrée, Aurélien Bory and others.

“DEEP DISH” shows how a dinner party may turn into an adventurous ride through the dimensions of macro- and microcosms. The live-images of a handheld camera, directed by the performers dancing on stage, lead through bizarre parallel worlds of organic objects.

Methods of film-making, along with acoustic contortions, evoke metaphors of baroque gardens, earthly delights and their inevitable collapse. A society driven by longing and curiosity, flamboyantly but also callously celebrates its own transience in the manifold dimensions of reality, blown up on a big screen. In this still-life, all movement and human behavior is inexorably absorbed by the opulence of nature.

CHRIS HARING is a famous Austrian choreographer, recipient of lots of awards, among them — “Outstanding Artists Award” for performing arts from the Austrian Federal Ministry of Arts (BMUKK). One of his main influences for his performances is science fiction and the human body as a cybernetic landscape. Chris Haring collaborated with different dancers and choreographers all over the world, he staged performances in Great Britain, Germany, China, France and Russia.

LIQUID LOFTwas founded in 2005 by choreographer Chris Haring, musician Andreas Berger, dancer Stephanie Cumming and dramaturge Thomas J. Jelinek. Combining modern dance, sound and light design, they create complex synthetic performances. In 2007 Liquid Loft won the Golden Lion for the Best Performance at the Biennale di Venezia, in 2008 the company’s performance opened the Austrian Pavilion at the World EXPO in Zaragoza.

“THE CITY” is a gritty and darkly comic whodunit hip-hop opera. It is a mesmerizing musical tale of vanity, lust and murder inspired by black music, hardboiled fiction and 40’s detective films. This sharp and fast paced production includes elements of film noir, rap, hip hop, beat boxing and operatic style sung dialogue, all woven through a riveting murder mystery starring small-time detectives, sultry singers and hard-hitting policemen. The story is about a young fatal beauty in a red dress named Sarah Bennett, who comes to Joe’s office (who represents Humphrey Bogart and Jay-Z all in one), and tells him about the mysterious disappearance of her sister. Joe decides to take the case, a decision that could cost him his life.

The story about vanity, passion and murder is put on music, the characters communicate with the audience via the language of beatbox and rap, and a female vocal is accompanied by classical guitar and keyboard. This is a sharp and fast paced production with a good sense of humor and parodical plot.

”THE EPIFAN LOCKS”  is a story of never-ending motion of the wheel of the Russian history, when human life stories of Peter the Great’s time mysteriously resemble those of the industrialization era. Or, maybe, even those of today.

Marina Brusnikina, the director, infused the complex production with new meanings. The whole performance is a lesson of the Russian literature. The set design has been created by Nikolai Simonov — one of the most famous and peculiar contemporary set designers. Ivan Shibanov, Igor Petrov and Alexander Fisenko are starring supported by the graduates of the Oleg Tabakov Acting School.

MARINA BRUSNIKINA is a theatre director and a teacher, actress, assistant artistic director of the Chekhov Moscow Art Theatre, Honored Artist of Russia. Marina Brusnikina is widely acclaimed as a brilliant master of productions based on the Russian prose.

OLEG TABAKOV THEATRE was founded in 1978. It is not for the first time that one of the most renowned Russian theatres has turned to Platonov’s prose. In 2007, Mindaugas Karbauskis directed ”The Story of Gleeful Moscow” — the production that has been awarded The Golden Mask Prize, shown in Voronezh within Platonov Arts Festival and enjoying great popularity among the public for almost a decade now.

“CHEVENGUR“ by Yuri Pogrebnichko blends two works —fragments of “Platonov’s one and only complete novel“ and scenes from Hemingway’s short story “The Killers“. Such an unusual symbiosis is one of the stylistic hall marks of the Okolo Theatre, where priority is given to associative rather than logical connections.

In this anti-utopia, time has stopped and the characters seem suspended in ether, in the waters of Lake Mutevo, where no voice can ring out loud, phrases drift from one work into another in a repetitive motion like water in a whirlpool. Nothing is impossible here: at the world boundary, somewhere between Vologda and Kerch, Schastlivtsev (the happy one) runs into Neschastlivtsev (the unhappy one) yet again, and the list of characters on the theatre programme features Nino Katamadze and Frank Sinatra.

YURI POGREBNICHKO is a theatre director and a teacher, People’s Artist of Russia. He is a multiple Golden Mask Award laureate, Fringe First laureate at the International Theatre Festival in Edinburgh and holder of many other accolades.

Yuri Pogrebnichko has created his own directing system based on live experimenting with numerous elements. He makes a convincing combination of different works in one production, relying on elements of video-art and biomechanics and thus getting the audience to notice new philosophical logic behind a familiar text.

THEATRE BY STANISLAVSKY’S HOUSE (KNOWN AS THE OKOLO THEATRE)was founded in 1970 as the Vyacheslav Spesivtsev Studio, later on renamed to the Moscow Youth Theatre on Krasnaya Presnya. In 1987 Pogrebnichko became the artistic director and the theatre received a more geographically accurate name —“OKOLO (next to) Stanislavsky’s House“. Though it is not only the location next to Leontievsky lane that is implied, but also the attitude to Stanislavsky’s ideas, which the theatre exists next to — OKOLO, rather that adheres to.

POGREBNICHKO’S “CHEVENGUR” SOUNDS LIKE AN EPILOGUE TO ALL THE HUMAN DEEDS: THE MAJOR FOUL-UPS AND PETTY SCAMS, GRAND DREAMS AND TRIVIAL SCHEMES— Natalia Kaminskaya, “The Best of the Worlds“

A SEARING MIX OF VISUAL AND HEARING SENSATIONS, DARING METAPHORS, PARADOXICAL COMPARISONS, INESCAPABLE BITTERNESS OF ANTI-COMMUNIST PHILOSOPHY BETWEEN THE LINES, — ALL OF THESE HAVE FOUND THEIR REFLECTION IN YURI POGREBNICHKO’S NEW PRODUCTION— Natalia Vitvitskaya, “The Best of the Worlds“

It is not for the first time that the students of Victor Ryzhakov’s workshop at the School-Studio of the Chekhov Moscow Art Theatre have turned to Platonov’s texts.  Last year they presented “Platonov. The First Meeting“, a play composed of extracts from the writer’s several works. The production is followed by yet another premiere — “Fro“, based on one of the most popular staging texts by Platonov.

The key to “Fro“ was found in the old Soviet film: the production design is dictated by the aesthetics of that time and the actors play within the constraints of the genre.

VICTOR RYZHAKOV is a theatre director, teacher and the artistic director of the Meyerhold Theatre Centre. He is the Honored Artist of Russia and the laureate of Stanislavsky Award in the nomination “For the Development of Theatre Pedagogy“, the national “Golden Mask“ Award and others. He is engaged in productions at the Chekhov Moscow Art Theatre, Praktika Theatre, DOC Theatre, Petr Fomenko Theatre, Satirikon Theatre, Theatre of Nations and abroad.

Searching for the key to the text, largely worn by numerous interpretations, the director finds an unexpected and unique technique: the performance is played in the sign language. Chekhov’s text is transmitted to the screen as subtitles, and “sounds“ in the viewer’s imagination with the very intonation he wants to read it. Leaving provincial backwater, serving science, working —everyone in Prozorov’s family agrees with each other, and everyone strives for happiness. The characters cannot understand until the very end how the tragedy is born from this common impulse, not only because they truly do not hear each other. The further into play the more rapidly mood and atmosphere changes and recognizable Chekhovian motifs sound more desperately.

The play was successfully shown at the “Territory“festival in Moscow.

This is a reformatory situation for the psychological theatre! Kulyabin deprives the actors of speech and taps into other reserves of performer properties. The “Three Sisters” ensemble is superb, the cast are brilliant. — Marina Dmitrevskaya, “Petersburg Theater Journal“

TIMOTHY KULYABIN is one of the most famous modern Russian directors. Born in a theatrical family (his father, Alexander Kulyabin is a director of the “Red Torch“ theatre, creator of “Siberian Transit“ and “Novo-Siberian Transit“ festivals), he graduated from the Directing Department of GITIS, Oleg Kudryashov workshop. Timothy Kulyabin debuted on the professional stage with a play “On Nevsky Prospect“ in Omsk.

Since 2007, Timothy Kulyabin is a director, since 2015 he is a chief director of the Novosibirsk Theatre “Red Torch“. In addition, he staged performances at the Theatre of Nations, at the Riga Russian Theatre of M. Chekhov and other stages. In 2014, his “Onegin“ production received the “Golden Mask“ Jury’s Special Award.

“RED TORCH“ is one of the leading theatres of Novosibirsk known throughout Russian theatre. Founded in 1920 in Odessa, the Theatre was fit-up for 11 years and in 1932, it settled down in Novosibirsk. Theatre performances have repeatedly been nominated for the “Golden Mask“ National Award; also, there is a theatre festival “Novo-Siberian Transit“ held on the basis of the “Red Torch“ .

“DRUNKS“, based on the play by Ivan Vyrypaev, renowned director and playwright of the new generation, was produced on the main stage of Tovstonogov Bolshoi Drama Theatre by the artistic director Andrey Moguchiy.

«Drunks» is a story telling us not to be afraid of living, loving, forgiving, and changing ourselves and the world around. It is a philosophical comedy about learning the truth. All of its characters are desperately drunk and thus fearlessly sincere. Having cast the formalities away, they are passionately babbling on the most heartfelt topics — liberty, love and God. The state of inebriation in the play is not only an artistic device to ironically distance the spectator from the characters, but also an integral condition for reclaiming the once lost contact with reality.

The play is a winner of the “Golden Mask“ in 2016 in the category “Best director“ (Andrey Moguchiy) and a winner of the “Golden Mask“ Jury’s Special Award for the ensemble cast.

ANDREY MOGUCHIY is a theatre and artistic director of Tovstonogov Bolshoi Drama Theatre. He is the founder of the independent theatre group Formal Theatre, the winner of the main prize at the Edinburgh festival in 2001 and Grand Prix at the BITEF festival (for the play “School for the fools”). He has directed over 40 plays and theatre performances.

Andrey Moguchiy is the organizer and a participant of a great number of theatre festivals. He is a multiple laureate of the «Golden Mask» and «Golden Sofit» awards (for the plays “School for the fools”, “Between a dog and a wolf”, “PRO Turandot”, “Ivany”, “Izotov”, “Happiness”, “Alice”). Also, Mr. Moguchiy is a laureate of the European New Theatre Reality award, International Stanislavsky theatre award and many others.

TOVSTONOGOV BOLSHOI DRAMA THEATREwas foundedin 1919 as the “tragedy, romantic drama and high comedy theatre“. Today, BDT is a theatre with a great history, taking its origins from Maxim Gorky and Alexander Blok, passing through the “golden age“ of GeorgeTovstonogov. It is a theatre for which artistry, modern content, and search for modern theatrical expression have been traditional priorities.

Love is the leitmotif of the play. Love for the godlike in human nature. Drunkenness in the play is not actually mundane, it shouldn’t be taken literally — it is a metaphor of epiphany, immersion in the current of life, love, the miracle of here and now… “Drunks” is a play for people who are free from stereotypes and prejudices — Andrey Moguchiy, director of the play

Supported by:

“SVANHILD” is a world premiere of an unfinished 1860 manuscript by Henrik Ibsen, which received its first public performance in 2014 under the direction of Lars Øyno. Some of the elements and characters from this work were later folded in to his 1862 work, “Love´s Comedy”. The main characters — a strong and independent Svanhild, who anticipates several of Ibsen’s later heroines, and romantic poet Falk — appear in both versions.

The director and actors manage to recreate the picture of society of mid XIX century, and it seems as if time has stood still. And despite the fact that the play was written over 150 years ago, it remains pertinent.

LARS ØYNO is a founder and artistic director of the Norwegian Grusomhetens Teater. The recipient of the "Oslo Prize for Best Performance" for his world-premiere direction of "Svanhild" in 2014. Not for the first time has the director referred to little-known texts of the great Norwegian playwright. His production “The Mountain Bird” (2009), based on the unfinished opera libretto by Ibsen, still successfully tours all over the world, in Russia it was shown at the festival “Territory”. For “The Mountain Bird” Lars Øyno was awarded the International Ibsen Scholarships.

Lars Øyno’s theatrical ideology is inspired by the visions of Antonin Artaud — a French dramaturge, actor and director. Antonin Artaud believed that theatre should be a force for the liberation of the human subconscious and revelation of man to himself. “The Theatre of Cruelty” has been created in order to restore to the theatre a passionate and convulsive conception of life, and it is in this sense of violent rigour and extreme condensation of scenic elements that the cruelty on which it is based must be understood.

GRUSOMHETENS TEATER is one of the most unique theatres in Europe. Founded in 1992 in Oslo, the company has performed on stages in Great Britain, Germany, India, Poland, Russia, Turkey, France, Sweden and Japan.

The directors of the performance are trying to question the outstanding baroque opera by Henry Purcell. Musical foundation in a new production becomes a play of jazz musicians, while actors move from opera singing to dramatic dialogues and improvisation. Under question are both music and performance mentioned in the original opera — acting/singing posture, relation to the space, musical transpositions and reformulations, relation to a convention, the approach of tragedy, rewriting of a myth and its themes: love, leave, devour, grieve to death. Characters have become more psychologically developed, less arrogant and epic.

“The Deceitful Crocodile” has been awarded by the Molière Academy as Best Music Theatre performance of the year.

SAMUEL ACHACHE is a young and already well-known actor and director. “The Deceitful Crocodile / Dido and Aeneas” is the first work under his direction. Achache’s second stage production “Fugue” was included in the main programmme of the Festival d’Avignon in 2015.

JEANNE CANDEL is a director and actress. The director of several productions, including an evening dedicated to Pina Bausch, in the Théâtre de Vanves.

THÉÂTRE DES BOUFFES DU NORDwas founded in 1876. It received worldwide fame thanks to the director Peter Brook, who worked there from 1976 to 2008 and put on the stage his greatest performances. Today, the theatre is under the direction of Olivier Mantei and Olivier Poubelle.

The company includes stilt-walkers, acrobats, musicians and dancers. Their bright costumes mesmerize spectators of all ages and their fancy characters take the audience on a journey to their magical world.

The repertoire of this Spanish theatre features a great number of amazing shows, marked by unfailing humour and resourcefulness. Their costumes evoke associations with a world of dreams and fantasies.

Andrey Bartenev is an artist, designer and author of a number of well-known sculptural performances such as “The Gogol-Mogol (Egg-Flip) or The Adventures of Invisible Warms in Russia”, which put into action art-ideas of a falling sculpture, “The Botanical Ballet”, “The Snow Queen”, “Mineral Water”, “The Royal Family Returns”, “Hunting for the Seal” in Manhattan Express and others. Bartenev’s works have been exhibited on multiple occasions at major museums in Russia and abroad. He also acted as a project co-author with outstanding artists and filmmakers of our time, including Andrew Logan and Robert Wilson.

“Fire People” theatre is a laboratory of images and special effects, mobile carnival workshop demonstrating its fire-and-pyrotechnics shows to the Russian and international public. Working simultaneously with strict forms and improvisation “Fire People” maintain a balance between a theatre and a circus, a trick and human sincerity, danger and fun.

Street Theatres Parade was added to the Platonovfest programme in 2014. The sight of stint-walkers, mimes and musicians dressed up in fabulous costumes and marching down the city’s main street has become one of the most spectacular and massive events of the festival.

This year, the Theatres parade is going to take place in a new format — not only specially invited guest companies, but also participants from Voronezh who have applied and gone through casting will join the parade.

After the parade its participants will give free performances in the city squares and parks.

Traditionally, the Theatre Parade of the Platonov Arts Festival is attended by Voronezh teams: The Governor’s Brass Band and Lady Drummers.

This year, for the first time ever, there will be local creative teams in the Parade, who have applied for participating and qualified. These are circus and dance troupes as well as amateur clubs.

“BUBBLES OF HOPE” ANDREY BARTENEVThis performance was conceived in a workshop of an English sculptor Andrew Logan. Andrey Bartenev was doodling circles with snowflake eyes, longing for snow, so untypical for winter in London. This is how the phrase was coined — “bubbles of hope” meaning hope for snow. The words morphed into numerous bright costumes of balloons and a vibrant show, which has successfully toured London, Munich, Vilnius, St. Petersburg, New York, Miami, Berlin and Norilsk.

“Bubbles of Hope” is a performance of floating sculptures, hiding a human body, whose movement causes transformation of shapes by almost a second.

“The Last Bastion” is an amusing play, where the audience are shot at with a catapult. The characters build barricades, attempt to desert, throw up the white flag… And fight again for their fragile painted stronghold — the Last Bastion.

This is a story about a gilded Pierettahiding an “adrenalin-amped” hooligan inside. The provocative play explores the issues of hidden aggression and imaginary boundaries, its message is simple and clear— in order to preserve the Last Bastion, instead of fighting external enemies, one has to resolve internal problems.

In 2005, Yusupov’s Viola Tango Rock Concerto — written specially for the violinist Maxim Vengerov — enjoyed a triumphant world premiere in Hannover. During the performance, Vengerov plays the viola, improvises rock on an electric violin and dances tango with his Brazilian partner Christiane Palha. According to Vengerov, Yusupov’s concerto is “the greatest concerto ever written for the viola”. In Voronezh, the composition will be performed by Maxim Rysanov.

THE CONCERT IS ATTENDED BY:argentine tango champion of Russia and Europe Dmitry Vasin and participant of national and international argentine tango championships Sagdiana Khamzina.

MAXIM RYSANOV, who will be conducting in the first part of the concert, studied viola and conducting at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. It is for the first time that Platonov Arts Festival invitesnot only soloists, but also a composer to its music programme. The author will present his own works.

THE CONCERT PROGRAMME features familiar to festival fans pieces by Robert Schumann and Platonov’s contemporary — Ottorino Resgighi, as well as Nino Rota’s music, which will be played in Voronezh for the first time. The Italian composer, a laureate of Oscar, the Golden Globe and Grammy awards, has attained worldwide acclaim, first of all, due to creating the musical score to the films by Federico Fellini, Luchino Visconti, Franco Zeffirelli and Francis Ford Coppola. His serious music — concertos and operas — are not so familiar to the general public, which does not detract from its brilliance.

“Romantic and rebellious Nito Rota… His music reflects the Italians’ spirit. For me his music is a whole world, a world of harmony and beauty, and I’m happy to introduce you to a new, unknown Nino Rota”, says Mario Brunello.

SAMOE BOLSHOE PROSTOE CHISLO/THE LARGEST PRIME NUMBER is a project of a journalist from Saint Petersburg Kirill Ivanov and ex-musician of "Christmas tree toys" Ilya Baramia. It is a Russian response to all of transatlantic intellectual hip-hop, abstract electronics and indie rock along with psychofolk.

SBPCH was formed in 2007, and they released their debut album the same year. In 2008, band members carried out the project with the help of fellow musicians called SBPCH Orchestra, and recorded a self-titled album. 17 different musicians participated in the project, including Stas Bareckii, Larik Surapov, ObschejitiE, Klever, and many others.

In the spring of 2009, the band returned to the trio. SBPCH moved away from the original electronic genre IDM and shifted towards live guitar music. As a result, the third album "Flash Drive" was released in 2011. With the same "live" sound, the band recorded "Forest oracle" together with the drummer Sasha Zakharenko.

In 2013, Alexander Zaitsev is leaving the band to devote himself entirely to his electronic project. Kirill Ivanov and Ilya Baramia wrote the fifth album while having a large tour in Russia and Ukraine. In 2014, "I think they have not come up with a word for it" album was released, and "Here and always" was released in 2015.

“Here and always” is perhaps the most vigorous album twinkling with all the color filters of disco music about rhythms, love and eternal matter... Almost every song contains a line urging for the manifest, the meaning of which is reduced to the seemingly simple, but not always equally clear sense to everyone: live, love, dance, burn, because there is nothing more than that. I will subscribe under this.

WE ARE THRILLED AND EXCITED TO RECEIVE THE GREAT HONOUR OF BEING INVITED TO RUSSIA TO PERFORM AT THE PLATONOV ART FESTIVAL, IT WILL BE OUR FIRST VISIT TO RUSSIA AND WE ARE EAGER TO IMPRESS THE AUDIENCE AND PROVIDE A WONDERFUL EVENING OF ENTERTAINMENT! RUSSIA HAS LONG BEEN TOP OF OUR WISH LIST TO PERFORM!— Alex Mendham

ALEX MENDHAM & HIS ORCHESTRA play an outstanding repertoire from the Golden age of Jazz with modern energy and passion. Pieces by George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and others favourites of the epoch take the audience into the times of Great Gatsby — roaring 1920s and charming 1930s. The eleven-piece Orchestra is resident orchestra at the Savoy Hotel. The bandleader is a charismatic conductor and vocalist Alex Mendham, pearl of the Orchestra — fabulous vocalists Dunlop sisters. The musicians preserve the sound of vintage Hollywood by playing original instruments of that time. The Orchestra has steadily earned itself the reputation of being the “go-to” group for television and film alike. Band members have appeared in ITV’s “Downton Abbey” and “Mr. Selfridge”.

CASTLE PARK IN RAMON is one of the most beautiful stages of Platonov Arts Festival. It is a Neo-Gothic architectural monument of the late 19th century. Palace of princess Oldenburg in Ramon is the only palace complex in the Central Black Earth Belt associated with the Romanov dynasty.

Open-air "World Music in White Well Quarry" is a project, successfully launched within Platonov Arts Festival-2015. The music marathon set against the backdrop of a picturesque lake brought to the chalk quarry (which has now been dubbed “Voronezh Grand Canyon”) about two and a half thousand spectators.

World Music in White Well is an essence of current folk striving for a modern rendition, a mixture of genres and styles, giving a rise to something new out of fusion of seemingly incompatible elements.

Premiere in Russia!

MINISTRY OF ECHOLOGY is one of the most popular young Lithuanian bands, a household reggae-dub name in the country. Actually, reggae is a rare genre on Lithuania’s stage, the country itself having little in common with sun-kissed Jamaica. Fortunately, one advantage of the world music is that it does not necessarily have to be performed by the indigenous population of a particular region.

Summer 2013 saw the “ministers” take the floor at a number of alternative music festivals in Lithuania. The band has got 10 members — almost an orchestra with drums and percussions, solo and bass guitars, a saxophone, a trombone, and horns.

Their debut album Notes & Quotes was released in 2014. Vilnius still remembers that legendary concert, whose venue with 1000 + people capacity could not accommodate all those wishing to get inside and enjoy the young band’s first performance; and the queue stretched for about 50 metres from the entrance.

After that event, Ministry of Echology gave a series of con-certs in Poland, Germany and France, where they received a warm welcome from the public. Soon their remix-album Version Excursion was released. The band’s songs can be heard in several Lithuanian films as well as on the national radio LRT and Opus radio. The band was nominated for the Lithuanian music M.A.M.A. award. The “ministers” have recently released their new album Wanderer.

The culture of reggae / ska / dub and fairly large community of fans in Lithuania formed a long time ago, but there were practically no “live” local performers in this genre until recently. And only when Ministry of Echology appeared and gained popularity incredibly fast, it became apparent how empty this place was. It is worth noting that the group performs songs not only in usual for such genre English, but also in their native Lithuanian language. Together with a wide range of musical stylistic elements, it was apparently the reason why Ministry of Echology today is not just an adaptation of foreign standards, but also a local phenomenon attracting even those who used to be quite far from most of the manifestations of reggae / world

JAMBINAI, a band from Seoul playing post-rock with traditional Korean instruments, creates some of the most innovative sounds in East Asia’s underground scene. Considering various attempts contemporary musicians make to bring traditional Korean music into the XXI century, kormore.com portal hailed Jambinai as “the first and the best”.

The band was founded in 2010, when they released their first EP. Ilwoo Lee (a guitarist, piri and oboe player), Bomi Kim (haegum (a cello-like instrument) player) and Eun Youg Sim (geomungo (zither) player) used to study Korean traditional music at university and felt it needed to find a new way to present itself. That is how they came by the idea to mix meditative tunes of the past with elements of metal, and electronic music.

In 2011, the band was invited to play at the Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival, one of South Korea’s largest music festivals. A few months later, Jambinai came in second winning the “Jury Prize” at the EBS Hello Rookie Final —an award show created to highlight South Korea’s top young bands.

In 2012, Jambinai released their debut full-length album, Différanc, which won Best Crossover Album at the 2013 Korean Music Awards and also earned the band a nomination for the Best Jazz & Crossover Performance award at the same ceremony.

Looking to build upon their success at home, the band is making their strides abroad. Jambinai are the first musicians in the history of Korea to be invited to Glastonbury (Great Britain), which is one of the most prestigious international music forums. As a quintet (plus a drummer and a bassist), they have performed at the World Village Festival (Finland), Cena Contemporanea (Brazil), WOMEX (Great Britain), Oslo World Music Festival (Norway), SXSW (the USA), Roskilde Festival (Denmark), Exit Festival (Serbia), Primavera (Spain) and Liverpool Sound City (Great Britain).

This band plays a fascinating, entirely original brand of post-rock music through the use of various traditional Korean instruments. This is the kind of music that is a breath of fresh air for someone who loves post-rock, but is tired of the lack of progression the genre seems to be plagued by— Sputnikmusic

An exotic duet of a rapper from New York and a virtuoso kora player from Guinea has toured the world in the past couple of years. Sekou Kouyate and Joe Driscoll blend hip-hop, funk, Afrobeat and reggae; they won the hearts of both the music critics and the public of at least 30 international festivals.

SEKOU KOUYATE, already a phenomenon in African music circles, has blown minds and ears with his hypersonic electrified riffs on the kora, bringing the exalted West African harp into the XXI century with use of distortion peddles, effects and previously-unimagined technical prowess. In France, where Sekou lives now, he is known as the “Jimi Hendrix of the kora” because of his unique style of playing with various effects, in a variety of genres, and with an extreme intensity.

JOE DRISCOLL is a popular American rapper performing a fusion of hip-hop, beatbox, reggae and folk. His colleague and a multiple Grammy laureate Cee-Lo Green has labelled the musician “the gangsta with an iron lung” for his glibly intoned patter. Joe Driscoll has toured all over North America and Europe and performed at the world’s major music festivals, including Glastonbury (Great Britain).

JOE DRISCOLL AND SEKOU KOUYATE first met at a music festival in France in 2010. Their debut album Faya, released in 2012, made it to the top ten world music albums on iTunes. The duet has participated in such festivals as WOMAD, Secret Garden Party, Greenman Festival and over 30 other music forums in Great Britain, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria and Canada besides giving a series of concerts in India and Africa.

They were nominated for the Best Cross-Cultural Collaboration award from Songlines magazine, and their track “Lady” was selected for the Songlines compilation album which sat at the top of the Amazon world music charts for a long while. The duet received the 2015 Transatlantic Bridge Prize (Canada).

Their latest album Monistic Theory was at No.1 in the iTunes World Music

HINDI ZAHRA is a Moroccan folk, jazz and blues singer living in France. She is one of the most well-known singers on the contemporary European stage.

Hindi Zahra made her radio debut in 2005 as a vocalist of Oursoul band. Her first solo EP came out in 2009. A year later, she recorded Handmade album, which shot to the top of World Music charts in Europe and was awarded a prestigious Victoires de la Musique prize as the Best World Music Album and Prix Constantin (a springboard for young budding singers) as the Best Album. Handmade brought the singer international acclaim: Hindi Zahra toured the 5 continents and gave over 400 concerts.

Today Hindi Zahra is one of the more renowned singers in Europe. Her new, hotly-anticipated album Homeland (2015) received favorable reviews and was nominated for the Victoires de la Musique award. Hindi Zahra’s first concert in Russia in support of the new album will take place in the White Well Quarry within Platonov Arts Festival.

Hindi Zahra mostly writes her songs in English, though her repertoire features compositions in Berber and French. Her voice is often compared to those of legendary Billie Holiday, Patty Smyth, Norah Jones and the Portished vocalist Beth Gibbons.

Hindi Zahra is a frequent guest of international music festivals, such as the International Jazz Festival in Montreal (Canada), Nice Jazz Festival (France), Oslo World Music Festival (Norway), Nour Festival of Arts in London (Great Britain), Festival des Libertés in Brussels (Belgium), Gnaoua Music Festival (Morocco), Torino Jazz Festival (Italy) and others.

HOMELAND ALBUM, as is obvious from the name, was inspired by Zahra’s motherland — Morocco. The country is situated on the crossroads between America and Europe, it is a focal point where India, the Middle East, Africa and Asia, the desert, the mountains and the ocean, the hot and the cold all converge. This is what Hindi Zahra’s songs are like — they are not confined to one style, they intertwine the Berber and Egyptian music with soulful jazz, eastern blues and even Brazillian Bossa Nova. Her music is unpredictable, graceful, mysterious and tender.

It’s an impressive set that shows off her fine, controlled vocals on cool torch ballads in English and French, flamenco-influenced compositions and, best of all, desert blues — The Guardian about Homeland

The band was founded in Edinburg in 2004. Their debut full-length album Lightweights and Gentlemen came out in 2007 and received numerous accolades, including the Best Band prize at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards (in fact, they won the award 4 times — in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2013).

VIOLONS BARBARES (translated as “Barbarian Violins” from French into English) is a multi-cultural project bringing together virtuosos from Mongolia (Dandarvaanchig Enkhjargal known as Epi-overtone vocals, morin khuur), Bulgaria (Dimitar Gougov — vocals, gadulka) and France (Fabien Guyot — vocals, percussions). The name of the band can be accounted for by the fact that two of the musicians play folk stringed instruments.

Their music is a refreshing mixture of the national traditions of the three countries, at times reminiscent of a rock song. They take the listener on a journey throughout the world: one can hear the thudding of hooves across the wilderness of the Mongolian steppe, mellifluous tunes of romantic France and soulful songs of open-hearted Bulgaria.

I LIVE AND SEEEXHIBITION OF WORKS BY NONCONFORMIST ARTISTS FROM POET VSEVOLOD NEKRASOV’S COLLECTION

”I LIVE AND SEE” EXPOSITION includes about 100 paintings, graphics and photographs by nonconformist artists from poet Vsevolod Nekrasov’s collection. These works were donated to the Pushkin Museum by Galina Zykova and Elena Penskaya (the poet and his wife Anna Zhuravleva’s heiress.)The exhibition features works by artists belonging to the Lianosov group, which became a hotbed of the Russian “unofficial art” of the “thawing” period: Evgeny Kropivnitsky, Olga Potapova, Lydia Masterkova, Oscar Rabin, Vladimir Nemukhin, Oleg Vasiliev, Erik Bulatov, Francisco Infante and others.

Vsevolod Nekrasov (1934 — 2009) is a Russian poet, art theorist, one of the leaders of the Second Russian avant-garde and the founders of Moscow Conceptualism. Since 1950s, he had been a member of the society of Russian poets and painters, centred around Evgeny Kropivnitsky and Oscar Rabin.

Nekrasov’s collection was accumulated for over 50 years. It is not as much a collection as a part of Vsevolod Nekrasov’s life: every work, every piece speaks of friendship and affection between its creator and the collector. In 1960—1970s Nekrasov composed a series of the so-called picture poems combining poetry with visual art, one of them becoming the flagship for his friend Erik Bulatov. A number of Bulatov’s prints and paintings were inspired by the poet’s life motto: ”wanting I / want not/ and seek not/ I live and see”

The museum stores over 683 thousand exhibits. Its current exposition features a wide range of tinted plaster casts of works, spanning ancient times, Middle Ages and Renaissance, as well as a collection of genuine pieces of art, sculpture, graphics and applied arts.

THE CHAMBER THEATRE in Moscow existed since 1914 till 1949. It became popular all over the world (with tours in Europe and even in South America) and it became the brightest phenomenon of XX century theatre scene. The theatre was admired by Bernard Shaw, Bertolt Brecht and Eugene O’Neill, but even worldwide recognition did not save the theatre. Nowadays Moscow Pushkin Theatre is situated in the historical building.  The name of the founder and stage director of the Chamber Theatre — Alexander Tairov — is in line with the names of Stanislavsky, Meyerhold and Vakhtangov. The stage reformer wanted to create a “synthetic theatre” and to grow actors who master stagecraft, music and pantomime.  For Alexander Tairov and Alisa Koonen, his muse, wife and a lead actress, the theatre was not only a place of work but also a home because their flat was situated in the theatre. Artists who decorated the plays lived there. Among them, there was Pavel Kuznetsov, Alexandra Ekster, Alexander Vesnin, brothers Vladimir and Georgii Stenbergs, Vadim Ryndin and others.

THE EXPOSITION “THEATRE OF TAIROV AND KOONEN” contains more than 70 original objects from the collection of A.A. Bakhrushin Museum — stage models and models of characters (dolls), reconstructions of costumes, costume and set designs. The most significant plays of the theatre are “Sakuntala” (1914), “Salomea” (1917), “Fedra” (1922), “Optimistic tragedy” (1933), “Madame Bovary” (1940) and “Bogatyrs” (music by A.P. Borodin) (1936), opera-farce, which led to the tragic end of the theatre. Alisa Koonen was a lead actress in all these plays.

A. A. BAKHRUSHIN THEATRE MUSEUM is the largest Russian museum that specializes in the history of theatre and a creative partner of Platonov Arts Festival. The Festival and the theatre have collaborated for the third time preparing the exposition “Theatre of Tairov and Koonen”.  The Museum was founded in 1894 by a famous Moscow manufacturer and art patron Aleksei Alexandrovich Bakhrushin. Almost 1,5 million exhibits are stored in the reserves of the Museum: costume and set designs by great masters, photographs and portraits, costumes worn on stage by prominent actors, programs and posters, rare editions on theatrical art, items of decorative and applied arts.

The curator of the exhibition — famousVoronezh gallery dealer and collectorof Contemporary Art Alexey Gorbunov

“WHEN I GROW UP” is an exposition that presents vibrating paintings in our memory from dream, childhood memories, details from daily routine and invisible changes in our life.  The exposition features works based on the illustrations by Vladimir Konashevich, a Soviet artist. In one of the illustrations, called “When I grow up”, Vladimir Dubossarsky fills black and white pictures with colours and creates an insight into history from his book for children.  The exposition consists both of the early artist’s works (the end of 80-s of the XX century) and the new works (2013-2015). The exposition is mainly connected with the childhood of the artist, but at the same time it is in tune with the works of Andrey Platonov, especially the works created on the decline of the USSR. There are paintings connected with peasants’ history “Ground (Great-grandfather)”, “Funeral” and “A Girl with a Hen” referring to the rough style of the 60-s. There is also a new painting “A Toy-soldier of Fortune” (2015) that depicts a toy, which arouses memories of war and orphanage. Intonation and images from these paintings are in tune with the mood of Platonov epoch.

“Glass-holder” and “Burner” are images of household items and symbols known subconsciously by people from several generations. They are depicted without any piety or nostalgia, but they seem to be important enough to be saved in paintings. “Party” and “Postcard” are family photos and illustrations transmitted to canvas and artifacts valuable for the artist. “Flag” is a memory about the time in the army, “Window” and “Bird-Sirin” are images of something ancient seen in childhood in the countryside. The paintings shown at the exhibition are different in their style, some of them were created in different time periods, but all of them are connected with the inner logic and make a panorama of the artist’s life.

VLADIMIR DUBOSSARSKY is a famous Russian artist, whose works are on a display in the State Russian Museum, the State Tretyakov Gallery, the Centre Georges Pompidou, Avignon Museum of Contemporary Art and in many other museums and galleries. He collaborated with Alexander Vinogradov, they founded a gallery “Art-Strelka” and a festival “Art-Klyazma”.

“There is a phrase “I am from the childhood”. This exposition is to some extent a way in which a child looks at things: a big flag, big glass-holders, big postcards and a small child who is looking at all this. We will never grow up in a way. We live in the world of illusions: we think that we can become cleverer and stronger, but this does not happen. We have grown up, but we haven’t changed … I thought that I had made a long way but I realized that I was practically where I had started with some slight changes. An artist has a lot of thoughts but only one remains forever with me”

THE EXHIBITION “UNFINISHED EISENSTEIN” is basedon the famous director’s unfinished film “Long Live Mexico!”and the idea that life and work of geniuses are not finished with their death — they extends to other times, acquiring new value.

The exhibition includes 300 frames of the film “LongLive Mexico!” (1930-1932), 40 photos of the workingmoments, 40 printed copies of the Mexican drawingsby Sergei Eisenstein, and 16 “frames accompanying”drawings. These are the copies of the drawings. The originaldrawings are in The Russian State Archive of Literatureand Arts. The exhibition is created by Naum Kleiman specially for Platonov Arts Festival. Naum Kleiman is a historian of cinema, one of the greatest authorities on Sergei Eisenstein’s work, director of “Eisenstein-Centre” and editor of the magazine “Kinovedcheskie zapiski”.

The history of the film “Long Live Mexico!” is amazing. The film crew that consisted of three people — Sergei Eisenstein, a director, Eduard Tisse, a cameraman, and Grigori Alexandrov, a filmmaker, went to Mexico in 1929. Joseph Stalin made the film crew return to the USSR in the middle of film shoot. All the materials were left in America because all the footage belonged to the film company.  The film returned to the USSR almost 50 years later when Eisenstein and Tisse were dead. In 1979 Grigori Alexandrov finished the film-making process on the basis of libretto written in the 30-s of XX century. There also is the second version of the film “Sergei Eisenstein. Mexican fantasy” created in 1998 by Oleg Kovalov, a scriptwriter, director and historian of cinema.  The two versions, the retrospective on Eisenstein’s films, the documentary about Eisenstein “Master’s house” and other films will be shown in the art centre “Commune”.

THE STATE FUND “EISENSTEIN CENTRE OF CINEMA STUDIES” (“EISENSTEIN-CENTRE”) was founded in 1994 by famous art experts, philologists and historians of cinema: Alexander Troshin, Naum Kleiman, Leonid Kozlov, Valentin Mikhalkovich and Oleg Aronson. The centre specializes in research and publishing.

THE RUSSIAN STATE ARCHIVE OF LITERATURE AND ARTS is the largest archive in Russia that has a great number of documents in cultural sphere. It was founded in 1941. It was listed in the National Register cultural heritage sites of the Russian Federation.

The art centre “Commune” will host a large installation of Alexander Shishkin-Hokusai “The Practices of Growing Up”. It consists of multiple plywood figures, hand-made and hand-painted by the artist. Depending on the characteristics of a building and light, the installation is adapted to a new stage. The installation was shown for the first time at the exposition “Remember Tomorrow” in the Street-Art Museum in St. Petersburg in 2015. The installation visited Ufa and is now coming to Voronezh.  The installation shows knowledge transfer as a ritual —a lesson looks like a mass. Shishkin-Hokusai thinks that growing up amounts to becoming a part of absurd and repressive system of social relationships, which is shown in culture by such institutes of upbringing and education as church and school.

ALEXANDER SHISHKIN is a famous Russian theatre artist, winner of K.S. Stanislavsky Theatre Award and multiple winner of National Theatre Award “Golden Mask” and others. He collaborates with such directors as Andrey Moguchiy and Yury Butusov. He worked in Alexandrinsky Theatre, G.A. Tovstoganov Drama Theatre, Lensovet Theatre, A.P. Chekhov Moscow Theatre, Russian Academic Youth Theatre, Satirikon Theatre and others. This year, Platonov Arts Festival will present the play “Drunks”(director — Andrey Moguchiy, scenographer— Alexander Shishkin). The artist uses a pseudonym when he works outside the theatre. Alexander Shishkin-Hokusai is a painter. He creates installations

and performances where, like in the theatre, he artfully fills up any space. He has gained nomination for Kandinsky Award. His expositions have taken place in Russia, Ireland, France, Finland and other countries. Hokusai is a pseudonym taken from a great Japanese artist: “... I play around my surname. Shishkin worked with nature. I added an antagonist Shishkin-Hokusai to the surname. Hokusai worked with characters, figurative plastic arts, even actors in some way. I have chosen two vectors for myself: Shshkin accounts for an environmental aspect and Hokusai stands for a psychodrama, work with Homo sapiens”, — the artist says in one of his interviews.

INVERSO MUNDUS is a video installation of the group AES+F, in which the artists referring to the late Middle Ages and Renaissance transmit the idea of the “World Inside Out” to the XXI century.  The inverted world is a popular theme used in the European Art of the transition period that appeared due to the destruction of the medieval system of values under the weight of the new knowledge of the world order. Folk art (folklore and lubok, in particular) reacted to these changes with acidulous satire laughing at the union of what cannot be united. Great painters also referred to this theme: motives of the «inverted world» can be traced in the works by Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Bruegel the Elder and Francisco Goya.  Old engravings in the genre of “World Upside Down” (The World Upside-down, El Mundo al Revés, Le Monde Renversé, and other translations in different languages) depict such scenes as a pig gutting the butcher, a child punishing his teacher, a man carrying a donkey on his back, man and woman exchanging roles and dress, a beggar in rags magnanimously bestowing alms on a rich man, demons, chimeras, fish flying through the sky and death itself, variously with a scythe or in the mask of a plague doctor. Mundus — the Latin “world” and Inverso — is both an Italian “reverse, the opposite” and the Old Italian “poetry”, which alludes to the art processing. In the interpretation of the art group AES+F absurd stories of bygone eras take place in the modern everyday life and the history repeats itself: the world is being transformed again and the established values are again questioned.

The video installation “Inverso Mundus” was shown for the first time in the parallel program of the 56th Venice Biennale in May, 2015 (the works of the art group AES+F had been shown in Venice a great number of times before). The project was shown in Russiafor the first time in the program of the 6th Moscow Biennale of contemporary art.   The project is created with the support of the fund FAENA ART and Blavatnik Family Foundation.

THE ART GROUP AES+F is popular among contemporary art lovers throughout the world. The group consists of such artists as Tatiana Arzamasova, Lev Evzovich,  Evgeny Svyatsky and Vladimir Fridkes. They use in their works photography, video and new technologies as well as other traditional media such as painting and sculpture. AES+F explores the values and conflicts of the modern global culture in its works.  The art group AES was founded in 1987 by Arzamasova, Evzovich and Svyatsky. Fridkes joined the group in 1995, at which point the group was renamed to AES+F. The expositions of the group took place in Australia, Austria, Argentina, Belgium, Great Britain, Venezuela, Germany, Spain, Italy, Canada, Cuba, China, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Serbia, the USA, Finland, France, Switzerland, Sweden, South Korea, Japan and other countries.

MULTIMEDIA ART MUSEUM, MOSCOW/ MOSCOW HOUSE OF PHOTOGRAPHY is an expo centre, the first museum in Russia that specializes in photography and video and media art. It was founded in 1996. The exhibitions of such photographers as Alexander Rodchenko, George Petrusov, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Annie Leibovitz and others took place in the museum.

THE GALLERY “TRIUMPH” was founded in 2006 and it focuses on contemporary art. Among well-known Russian artists with whom the gallery works are AES+F, Alexander Vinogradov, Vladimir Dubossarsky, Alexei Beliayev-Guintovt and Recycle Group. The gallery showed the works of Damien Hirst and Jake and Dinos Chapman for the first time in Moscow.

NEXT TO THE LAST HUT THERE WAS SITTING A NAKED MAN, HIS CREASED SKIN HANGING IN FOLDS LIKE OLD, DISTRESSED CLOTHING; HE WAS PICKING AT REED STALKS IN HIS LAP TRYING TO MAKE A PIECE OF HOUSEWARE OR AN ORNAMENT — Andrey Platonov , "-Djan"

In a project, developed in collaboration with an actor and producer Kamil Tukaev, a photo-artist Alexey Bychkov visualizes Platonov’s “innermost” man.

This character ponders and doubts, sometimes suffers and starves, he senses the flow of life with his skin, feels himself an integral part of the huge world and the people inhabiting it. One comes across the innermost man in Platonov’s different works, not only in the eponymous novella. It abounds in understatement and generalization, muted expression with little regard for detail, and yet, makes it possible to identify a contemporary man.

Who is he, this vessel of the Innermost — a wise man, a martyr, a prophet or just a physiological landscape? An actor of Voronezh Chamber Theatre Boris Goloschapov has become the face and body of Platonov’s universal character.

ALEXEY BYCHKOV, a photographer, cameraman and director from Voronezh, studied in the Russian State Institute of Cinematography named after S. A. Gerasimov (VGIK). He has worked as a cameraman at “Russia-1”, “Russia-2”, OTR, “Culture” and other channels. As a photography director, he participated in filming “Rita’s Last Fairytale” movie, directed by Renata Litvinova. He also worked as a director and cameraman on a short feature film about Samuil Marshak “Natanelle” (2016), filmed in Voronezh.

This year, the Platonov Arts Festival is coming back to that place to fill it with new events.
