“Kindness is the only service that will stand the storm of life

and not wash out. It will wear well and will be remembered

long after the prism of politeness or the complexion of

courtesy has faded away.” Abraham Lincoln

Kindness is the quality of being friendly, generous,

and considerate. Kindness is the power to accomplish good in the face of

challenges. It improves our quality of life in the workplace as well as in the

community. Doing something good for others feels good. An act of kindness is

just as rewarding for the provider as it is for the recipient. Showing kindness

increases self-esteem, empathy and compassion. Additionally, the health

benefits include decreased blood pressure and a reduction in one’s the stress

level!

One of the easiest ways to show kindness is by being present,

physically and mentally. Put your phone away, and give people your full

attention when you're with them. Be purposeful in making eye contact and

share the gift of a smile.

One event celebrated in February is Valentine’s Day, an occasion to

celebrate affection, friendship and admiration for others. It is a perfect time

to show kindness towards one another. Consider performing random acts of

kindness. Some ideas include: holding the door open, giving an unexpected

compliment, offering assistance in a task, providing a treat, letting someone

cut in front of you in line or sending a personal note.

Doesn’t kindness sound a lot like Altruism?

Service

In this unprecedented time, the approach to service may require a fresh approach. Reach

out to family, friends and community members in a virtual format. Consider a phone call

or a hand written note to let others know they are thought of and their well-being is

important. If your club is looking for ideas, consider accessing the Altrusa International

Service database at altrusaservice.org. District Three is well represented with 38

submissions, the leading District in the organization.

Membership :

Conference Delegates

It is time to identify the delegates for Conference. Please encourage members to

attend, those who have attended previously and those who will gain from the

experience. The District Conference provides a time for reflection, celebration and

camaraderie. Supporting attendance at conference demonstrates caring about a member’s growth and

contribution to the club. Conference attendees will bring back ideas that the club may consider for adoption. If a

member has not attended International Convention before, it will also give that member a glimpse into the benefits

of Convention.

Communication

To ensure accurate and successful communication with your Board and members

in your club, consider the following skills:

Active listening, the most important aspect of communication

Non-verbal, facial expressions, hand gestures and body language add

to the message

Communicate in a clear concise manner while demonstrating respect and trust

Enter the conversation with a flexible and open mind, listening to other points of view

Provide constructive feedback and collaboration opportunities

Implementing these techniques can greatly improve and enhance the messages given to and received from

members.

Leadership

Listening: Using Ears to Connect with Hearts

Two purposes for listening are: to connect with people and to learn. A leader has a lot of voices competing for

attention. When did you last paid close attention to your members and what they have to say? Were you just

grabbing onto facts? Did you listen not only to the words, but for the meaning, feelings and context that

accompanied those words? To improve your listening, consider the following:

Seek a common ground by meet people where they are. Ask a few questions about the individual as a

person.

As you listen to the conversation, be sure to pay attention to the emotional content. Listen between the

lines.

Be attentive to the individual. Focus on what and how the message is being conveyed.

“ A good leader encourages followers to tell him what he needs to know, not what he wants to hear.”

John Maxwell
