Responding to influenza in schools
The following is a message for schools on managing the current rates of influenza.
The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has advised that there is
an increased rate of influenza reports throughout Victoria. Schools are also
reporting higher rates of students affected by influenza. All schools should consider
the following important points when responding to students affected by influenza:
• Students with cold or flu-like symptoms should be encouraged to seek
medical attention, limit contact with others and stay at home until
symptoms have passed.
• If a child becomes ill at school with these symptoms, schools should
contact the family and arrange for the collection of the child.
• Good general hygiene remains the best defence against infection and
schools should encourage children to regularly wash their hands and
cover their nose and mouth if sneezing and coughing.
Please do not send your child to school if they are unwell or becoming unwell. It
is not fair to them, other children or our staff as infections and viruses spread
quickly in the school setting. Our Health Centre is available for our nurse to assess
minor injuries and illnesses that have come on during the day. Sick children are
sent home as soon as possible to limit any spread of infection. Home is also the
most comfortable place when you are sick. For serious injuries, we call an
ambulance.
Could parents please ensure that the contact details provided to the school are
up to date and that you have ambulance cover.
School Disco
Thank you to our Glendal Parent Group for organising our annual school disco.
The disco is scheduled over lunchtime and the afternoon of the last Monday
of this term (usual assembly time) so as not to affect student learning. We
encourage all students to attend, enjoy the dancing together and have fun. It
is a wonderful way to promote camaraderie and celebrate the end of a
successful term.

When used appropriately the internet is an amazing resource that provides access to a huge amount of valuable
information that can give answers to the minds of the most inquisitive children.
It does however, need to be used cautiously and under the supervision of adults.
Over the next few weeks, I have included information in the school newsletter that I am hoping parents will find
useful in how to deal with issues that may arise with cyber technology. Prohibition from its use is not the answer
rather carefully considered and implemented guidelines and education should be the focus.
Please talk with your children about how to remain safe whenever they are using your computers at home.
Guidelines and restrictions are there for a reason. At school, we constantly remind the children about not posting any
private information, including photos that may identify any personal details, e.g. street address, name, school.
This week’s tip sheet is about tackling cyberbullying. This can be a real concern if your child is ever a victim of it. The
points raised are worth discussing so that your child can be prepared and know what to do should they experience it.
