    9th January 2010

    Dear parents,

The midyear examination week will begin on Saturday the 30th

January 2010. Information on the exact dates for specific subjects willfollow shortly in a letter from the school.

This examination week is testing a selection of the material that wevecovered since the beginning of the academic year.

The following provides a summary of what topics should be revised athome for the subjects that are taught by the class teacher.

Information on Arabic, I.T. and other subjects should follow from theteachers of those subjects.

This booklet includes information on English, maths, science, socialstudies and Islamic Studies in English (please note that Saudi nationalsare not taking Islamic Studies in English, they have a different teacherand will need to refer to him for information on revision).

    Thank you.

English Paper 1 Phonics, Comprehension and

    Spelling

    Phonics

This concentrates on the childs ability to recognise particular soundswithin words.

The question format will be that I will read a word/s to the childrenand then ask them to select a word from a choice of three (also readaloud to them) that either:

Rhymes with the word I said;Contains the sound that I said;Has the same beginning sound as the word I said;Has the same ending sound as the word I said;Has the same middle sound as the word I said.

Please pay particular attention to the concept of rhymes with.

I will upload a copy of the end of unit 1 phonic test on the classwebsite in the phonics section. This will give you some further examplesof the style of questions used in assessing phonics.

    Comprehension

This subject tests the childs understanding of texts and stories;including concepts such as understanding the characters and howthey feel. Knowing where stories are set. Understanding that stories

can be fantasy and identifying information in stories that let us knowthat its fantasy. Recognising order in stories, what happened first orlast in a story.

The test format will be that a new story containing similar vocabularyto the stories that weve covered in the Unit 1 reading book will beread to the class several times.

The children will then be asked questions that will show whether or nottheyve understood the story. The questions and possible answers will

be read to them and they will select one of three different answers.

    Examples of comprehension style questions:

    1) When we read the story Animal Park in Unit 1 they were asked.

After big cats hunt, they are?

    mad

    tired

    sad

    The answer was: tired

    2) When we read the story The Big Blue Ox in Unit 1 the childrenwere asked.

How can you tell that this story is make-believe?

The ox was big The ox packed the bags

    The ox was hot

The answer was: The ox packed the bags

This is a difficult topic to revise, as its a skill rather than thememorisation of facts. However, to help encourage this skill in thechildren you can try reading through some of the stories that wevecovered in the Unit 1 reader and asking them questions about the

text. Such as What happened first in the story?, How would you feelif this happened to you? or Where does this story take place?

I have uploaded some examples of comprehension style questionsrelating to some of the stories that weve covered in class onto thewebsite in the HFW & Comprehension section.

    Spelling

We will retest the children on a selection of the words that we have

    covered in recent spelling tests.

Please revise the following words. We will select two words from eachcolumn and ask for them to be spelt correctly, making it a total of 10words in the test.

SciencePlease revise the following selection of topics covered in chapters 1 to4 of the science books.

Please note that were testing the childrens oral comprehension of

the key words and concepts, not their reading or spelling abilities. Theformat will be that I will read aloud a question to the children andthey will then have to select an answer from a choice of three whichwill also be read aloud to them. Exactly the same format that youveseen in the chapter tests, except there will be more questions on theexam paper.

To revise, I suggest that you check your child understands:

    1) The meaning of the words that you find highlighted in yellow inthe colour textbook lessons;2) The meaning of the words found in boxes in the workbook

exercises.3) He should also be able to orally answer the questions found in

the lesson checkpoints located at the end (and sometimes inthe middle) of each lesson in the textbook.

The glossary at the back of the colour science reader (pages EM2 toEM21) provides additional definitions of keywords and may also bereferred to. You can use this in conjunction with the words you find

highlighted in the texts for additional word definitions.
