Note to Teachers: Teaching situations are so different, that it’s impossible to provide a single lesson plan that will suit the needs of all teachers. In this section, we will provide sample lesson. Song notation and more detailed suggestions are given in “Song Activities” for each song. The song notation won’t be provided in the lessons that follow, unless it is an “extra” song that isn’t a movie. The general music lesson includes suggestions for two 30 minute lessons in the week.

Musicplay 2: wk 23General Music Lesson Plan
Flaschard Turnover: rhythm q qr Q h h.• Choose four rhythm flashcards and hang on the board with magnets or place them in a pocket chart.
Have the students read all four. Turn one over. Have them say all four cards again, including the one that is turned over. Turn another card over. Have them say all four cards again, including both cards that are turned over. Continue until all cards are turned over.
• In the second lesson of the week, try clapping a flashcard and having the children say what you clapped.• Both these activities are in preparation for rhythm dictation
Poem: 68a. John John the Leprechaun• Teaching Purpose/Suggestions: You can do an activity with this poem to help reinforce the feeling of 2/4
meter, or the feeling that some beats feel stronger than others. Invite the children to step the beat as they say the poem. Then have them take one shoe off and say the poem. (They should begin stepping the beat on the foot that has the shoe on!) Ask them if one beat feels stronger than the other. Draw hearts on the board and tap the beat. Ask them how many beats are in each group. (2)
• Review with the students that composers put barlines before strong, or accented beats.
Song: 66. It’s Raining melodic contour• Teaching Suggestions: Read the rhythms. Sing the song in solfege or draw the melodic contour on the
board and sing as you show the melody.
• Playing and Creating: Create an introduction to the song with rainsticks, newspaper, shakers, chopsticks, snaps and body sounds. You could have students make rainsticks and shakers as an art project to use with this song. Decide on how to organize your performance (the form) and perform introduction and sing the song “It’s Raining.” If your students have many wonderful ideas, you could have them create a rondo using the song as the theme, and all the different introductions as variations.

Teaching Purpose/Suggestions: Read the rhythms of song #66 “It’s Raining.” Sing the song in solfege or draw the melodic contour on the board and sing as you show the melody. (1)
Playing and Creating: Create an introduction to the song with rainsticks, newspaper, shakers, chopsticks, snaps and body sounds. You could have students make rainsticks and shakers as an art project to use with this song.
Decide on how to organize your performance (the form) and perform the introduction and sing the song “It’s Raining.” If your students have many wonderful ideas, you could have them create a rondo using the song as the theme, and all the different introductions as variations.
Use the Orff arrangement of “It’s Raining” CD3: 14 Orff #15 If you prefer, students could create their own accompaniment or create rhythmic or melodic ostinatos to accompany this song. (2, 3, 4)
Curriculum Connections: Integrate with art by having the students make and decorate their own rainsticks. To make a simple rainstick collect “Pringles” containers. Poke wooden skewers into the tube and crinkle up tinfoil and put in to fill some of the gaps. Fill it with lentil, rice or popcorn. Seal the end. When you tilt the container from side to side it sounds like a rainstick.
Musicplayonline: On musicplayonline, the Concept Slides include notation, lyrics, solfa practice, an Orff arrangement, and two slides to guide creation. Included with this song is a Tone Ladder, and several printables.

tree!
J. Darion and G. Kleinsinger
Then one day I woke to find a very lovely sight.A tree all full of lollipops had grown in the dead of night.I sat beneath that wonderful tree and looked up with a grin. And when I opened up my mouth, a lollipop dropped right in. Oh,
Ha ha ha ho ho ho what a place to be, Under my lollipop lollipop lollipop lolli lolli lollipop tree!
Winter came and days grew cold as winter days will do.And on my tree my lovely tree, not one little lollipop grew. From every branch an icicle hung, the limbs were bare as bones. But when I broke those icicles off, they turned into ice cream cones! Oh,
Ha ha ha ho ho ho what a place to be, Under my lollipop lollipop lollipop lolli lolli lollipop tree! Under my lollipop lollipop lollipop lolli lolli lollipop tree!
