APPLICATION FOR GRADUATE FACULTY STATUS

Instructions

Please determine the appropriate Graduate Faculty status for which you are applying. Please review the criteria for each rank to ensure you are eligible. Please note that only tenured or tenure-track full-time faculty members are eligible for Full Membership or Provisional Membership in the Graduate Faculty.

Full – For Full appointment to the Graduate Faculty of Kennesaw State University (KSU), a faculty member must:

hold a full-time tenure or tenure-track position at KSU at the rank of Assistant Professor or above,

show evidence of effective teaching multiple courses at KSU at a level consistent with The Graduate College’s expectations for graduate faculty, and,

have a track record and active program of scholarship or creative activity consistent with the Graduate College’s expectations for graduate faculty, and

hold the relevant terminal disciplinary degree, or in unusual cases, have demonstrated exceptional scholarly activity or professional experience.1

Full Appointments are made for a period of five years. This is the standard graduate appointment for all faculty who are engaged in graduate education, broadly defined by their research and creative activity, teaching, and service to their professional communities.

Provisional – For Provisional appointment to the Graduate Faculty of KSU, a faculty member must:

hold a full-time tenure or tenure-track position at KSU at the rank of Assistant Professor or above,

have some teaching experience, or demonstrate high potential for effective teaching consistent with The Graduate College’s expectations for early career graduate faculty, and,

begin an active program of scholarship or creative activity consistent with The Graduate College’s expectations for early career graduate faculty, and,

hold the relevant terminal disciplinary degree, or in unusual cases, have demonstrated exceptional scholarly activity or professional experience.

A Provisional Appointment is typically awarded to new faculty without an extensive record of teaching, or who are beginning to develop a record of scholarship consistent with the college’s expectations for early career graduate faculty. However, it may also be awarded to faculty members who have transferred from other institutions to KSU. Provisional Appointments may be for a period up to three years. At the conclusion of that appointment, the applicant may apply for Full Appointment to the Graduate Faculty, or may, if circumstances warrant it, reapply for Provisional Graduate Faculty status.

Clinical Professional of Practice – For appointment to the Graduate Faculty of KSU, a Clinical Professional of Practice member must:

1 The general expectation is that those engaged in graduate education will hold the relevant terminal degree in a discipline relevant to the course or courses the individual is teaching, as indicated on the Academic Department’s “Course to Faculty Degree Correlation.” See your chair/director for more information.

hold any form of non-tenure track position at KSU (part-time, temporary, adjunct, visiting, clinical, etc.), or hold a position that is external to KSU

have some teaching experience, or demonstrate high potential for effective teaching consistent with The Graduate College’s expectations for graduate faculty based upon professional experience, and,

have an active program of scholarship or creative activity consistent with The Graduate College’s expectations for graduate faculty based upon professional experience, and,

hold the relevant terminal disciplinary degree, or in unusual cases, have demonstrated exceptional scholarly activity or professional experience (i.e., professionally qualified).

A Clinical Professional of Practice appointment is typically awarded to an academically qualified individual who is not employed by KSU, yet wishes to serve on a graduate student committee. Clinical graduate appointments are typically made for a one (1) to three (3) year period reflecting the assignment in the graduate domain (thesis or dissertation committee member, temporary teacher, outside reviewer of graduate performance, Visiting Scholar, etc.). They may be renewed. Appointment as a Clinical Professional of Practice does not carry the rights and privileges of Full or Provisional membership on the Graduate Faculty (such as serving on committees limited to Graduate Faculty members or voting on Graduate Faculty matters). However, when assigned to a student’s graduate committee and solely in that context, they do have the right to vote as a Member of the Graduate Faculty would.

Permission to teach graduate courses -- For appointment to the Graduate Faculty of KSU, a faculty member must:

hold any form of non-tenure track position at KSU (such as lecturer, limited term, temporary, adjunct, visiting, clinical),

have some teaching experience, or demonstrate high potential for effective teaching consistent with The Graduate College’s expectations for graduate faculty (as evidenced by undergraduate teaching record, scholarly activity, or professional experience in a particular area related to a course or other assignment, and

hold the relevant terminal disciplinary degree, or in unusual cases, have demonstrated exceptional scholarly activity or professional experience (i.e., professionally qualified).

Permission to teach graduate courses is typically granted to non-tenure track full-time faculty or administrators, part-time faculty, and adjunct faculty, who may be reviewed for permission to teach graduate classes or otherwise direct the experience of graduate students. It may be granted for a period of up to three years. Approval to teach graduate courses is contingent upon reappointment to a specified position each year during the three-year period. Permission to teach graduate courses does not make an individual a member of the Graduate Faculty.

If an applicant is ineligible for appointment at the Full, Provisional, or Clinical ranks, she or he will be considered for permission to teach graduate courses.

Section 2 Proposed Graduate Teaching

The award of Graduate Faculty Status or permission to teach graduate courses is limited in scope, and only permits the applicant to teach those graduate courses for which he or she has been approved as a result of his or her application. Typically, a faculty member is approved to teach those courses for which her or his terminal degree has been identified as a “Qualified Faculty Degree,” and is on file with the University’s Office of Academic Affairs.

a) TEACHING GRADUATE COURSES

In this section, an applicant for Graduate Faculty Status should specifically identify the graduate course or courses that he or she wishes to teach, making certain that her or his terminal degree has been identified as by his or her academic department as a “qualified faculty degree” (in the course correlation spreadsheet) for each of those courses.

If an applicant wishes to teach a course for which his or her degree is not a “Qualified Faculty Degree,” she or he will need to supplement his or her application by filing a “justification” (Section III) of this application.

Example: The Faculty of Coles College of Business identifies the Doctor of Business Administration (“DBA”) among the terminal degrees qualifying a faculty member to teach BRM 9101 (Foundations of Business Research), a doctoral-level course. In the section below, the Faculty member would identify the course by prefix and name, and indicate that her or his degree is considered a “qualified faculty degree” for the course.

Assume that the faculty member has also been asked if he or she would consider teaching EDL 7600 (School Operations and Community Relations), a master’s-level course in Bagwell College, and one focusing on the business processes of schools. While a faculty member possessing a DBA may be highly qualified to teach the course, a DBA is not among the degrees listed as “Qualified Faculty Degrees” for the course. Consequently, until the Faculty of the academic department responsible for the course identifies the DBA as a “qualified faculty degree” for teaching the course, the faculty member would need to complete Section III (Justification) if she or he wanted to teach EDL 7600.

If you do not know whether your degree is a “Qualified Faculty Degree” for a particular course or courses, please check with the Chair of the Academic Department in which the degree or program is housed.

DIRECTIONS – Please list all graduate courses that you are requesting permission to teach within the next 18-24 months only. If you do not list a course, you will not be given permission to teach it. After obtaining Graduate Faculty status or other permission to teach graduate courses, if you wish to amend this list to include additional courses, you may do so.

*Multiple signatures are needed only when the courses listed span multiple departments

b) OTHER GRADUATE INSTRUCTION

If the applicant is requesting permission to engage in other graduate teaching/service/scholarship of an instructional nature (such as service on a dissertation committee or supervision of a graduate research assistant), please describe that separately:

c) VERIFICATION OF ASSIGNMENT: As membership in the Graduate Faculty requires active engagement in graduate instruction, applicants are required to obtain verification from the Graduate Program Director and Department Chair of the program(s) in which she or he desires to teach, stating that he or she is likely to perform the graduate instruction within the next twenty-four (24) months. Please include a verification for all programs for which permission is sought

Section 3 Justification for Exception

This section should only be completed by faculty members who do not hold a “Qualified Faculty Degree” (generally the terminal degree) in the discipline of the course or courses they will be teaching.

This section permits applicants who do not have traditionally required academic credentials to show that they have “demonstrated exceptional scholarly or creative activity, or professional experience” conveying expertise that is equivalent to the appropriate formal academic credentials required for graduate teaching. Please provide justification and evidence by responding to all of the prompts below in separate document. Please note that a successful justification is likely several pages long.

Step 1: As a general overview, the applicant should include (only once):1. Documented evidence of performance competence and success in college

teaching2. Documented evidence of substantial and successful related professional

work experience3. Documented evidence of recognized certifications or licensures in the

discipline (avoid jargon and explain the significance)4. Other documented evidence of outstanding achievement, expertise,

scholarship and/or creativity

Note: While bullet points can be appropriate, a justification best done through narrative – explaining the significance of each of the of the points provided. Please realize that this justification will be reviewed by a panel of faculty members with diverse academic backgrounds. Further, the applicant should include plans for any expected limitations or special supervision related to KSU course assignments.

Step 2: Then, for each course the applicant is requesting permission to teach, list: The course description Course outcomes/objectives How her/his additional experience or background satisfies each objective
