elcome to theMA in Research& Experimental Psychology program at SJSU! Thepurpose of this Handbook is to provide information about our program and toanswer many of the questions you will have as your progress through theExperimentalPsychologyprogram.Pleasereviewthisdocumentcarefullyandkeep

Formany of you, graduateschoolwillbea time inyour lifewhenyouexperiencesomeofyourgreatest“highs”,aswellasyourdeepest“lows.”Nothingyoudowillalterthisfact,butwhat you do can dramatically affect the ratio between positive and negativeexperiences—maximizing your time spent enjoying the ride.Thereare two

importantconceptsthatyoumustgetyourheadaround;theearlier,thebetter.

First, graduate school is not merely a simple continuation of your senior year as anundergraduate.What youwill be exposed to, howmuch youwill be exposed to, and,mostimportantly, what will be expected from you will be dramatically different from yourexperiencesasanundergraduate.Youarebecomingmastersofafield!Thatistosay,younotonlyneedtoknow information,butyouneedtobeabletouse theinformation,ofteninnew,creative,andsophisticatedways.

Second,youmustgaincontroloverandtakeresponsibilityforyourprogress.Althoughwearehere to help, your ultimate success in our program and in your careerwill depend on yourpersonal approach and commitment to your graduate education. Will you approach yourstudiesasameanstoagradeorasameanstomastery?Willyouself‐engageinthemanyfacetsofscience(e.g.,theliterature,research,dataanalysis,interpretation,conferencepresentations,publishing,etc.),orwillyouwaittobetoldwhattodonext?Astheprogramfacultywearehereto expose you to the theory, techniques, and experiences which make‐up the science ofpsychology.Whetherornotascientistandscholarareborn‐outofthisexposurewilldependentirelyonyoureffortsandcommitmenttoyourgraduateexperience.

InthegreattraditionofTopTenlists,thefollowingaresometipsforsuccess(innoparticularorder).ThesearelikelyissuesyouwilladdresswhileyouarehereatSJSU.

1. Aim for Mastery – Not the Top of the Class Oneoftheclassicthingsthatwillhappentomanypeopleingraduateschoolistheywillrealizetheyarenolongerthesmartestpersonintheclass.Youareherebecause,inalllikelihood,youwereoneofthesmartestintheclass.Nowyouareinaclassof“smarties.”

Eachpersonaroundyouwillbringsomethingtoyourknowledge.Wewantyoutocontinuetodoyourbest,butnoticethatthecompetitionfactorisnolongerrequired.Aimformasteryofthematerialyouaregiven.Competewithinyourself.Allofyouaresuccessfulinthatyouarehere.

2. Aim High and Then Raise the Bar Whatyouareabouttodowilltakealotofcourage?Youaregoingtotrytodevelopyourcoreskillsasaresearcherandscholarinjustafewshortyears.Growthischallengingandsometimesstressful.Inthisprocessnoticeyourdesiretodojustenoughtogetbyandthenreturntoyourvalueofbecomingbetteratwhatyouwanttodo.Setyoursightshigh,aimforthosegoals,andthenbebraveandraisethatbarofsuccess.

3. Take Responsibility Thisisnotthesameasotherexperiencesyoumayhavehadwhereyourteachersorcolleagueswill tell you what you need to do. Part of becoming a professional is learning to takeresponsibilityforyoureducationanddevelopment.ThismeansaskingquestionsANDlookingforanswersonyourown.

Getthemostoutofyourgraduateeducation.Takeadvantageofopportunitiesthatcomeyourway.Thismayincludeattendingworkshops,presentingatconferences,orteachingalectureortwo.

Whenyouhearaboutanexperiencesomeoneelseishavingorjusthad,askhowyoucangetthat,too.Thereareveryfewopportunitiesinthisfieldthatonlyhappenonetime. Youmusttakeactionandseekoutwhatyoudesire.

4. Change your Study Habits Youwill likely need to learn to study differently than you did in your undergraduatework.Threemainissuesrequireyoutochangehowyouapproachlearningthismaterial:

With respect to the first issue, there is a great deal to read. Ask yourself to step up to thechallenge of readingwhat you have been assigned. Be sure to budget your time andmakechoicesabouthowyouallocateyourtime.

Yourprofessorsarenotsadistic(well,notallofthem).Theyarenottryingtobreakyouorcauseyoutogoblind.Instead,theyhaveverythoughtfullynarroweddownamassiveliteratureintowhattheythinkyoucanandmustreadinasemester.Yes,allofyourprofessorsknowyouhavemorethanonecourse.

Donottrytodothereadingbylookingfortheanswerstotestquestions;readforwhatyouneedto learn for yourdevelopment andwhat theprofessor is asking you to learn.DoALLof thereading.DONOTskim.

Withrespecttothesecondandthirdissues,rememberthatyouaredevelopingyourknowledgebaseasascientistandscholarofpsychology.Youranswerstodifficultquestionsmustshowthat

youappreciatethecomplexityoftheissuesraised.Youranswerstoquestionsneedtoshowthatyourknowledgebaseisbuildingovertimeandintegratesmaterialfromallofyourcoursework.

Utilize Your Peers Ican’ttellyouhowmanycolleagueshavesharedthatwhentheygotintograduateschool,theywerecertain that theyweretheonlyonestrugglingandthat they’dsoonbekicked‐outoncetheir true abilities became known. The truthwas that almost everyonewas struggling; justabouteveryonewassecond‐guessingtheirabilities.Youcangetsomanythingsfromyourpeersorfellowstudents.Herearejustafewgreatfeatures:

Formstudygroups–studyoutloud,sharethewealth,andtalkouttheissues

Utilizesocialsupport–gethelpwithyourstress,havelunchtogether,laughtogether

Normalizeyourexperience–talktoyourfriendsaboutyourchallengesandexperiences‐oddsareyourcolleaguesfeelthesameway,andyoudidn’tevenknowit.Theworldfeelsmoremanageablewhenyouarenotalone.

6. Improve your writing Greatwritingisanotablecharacteristicofsuccessfulscientists.Clarityinwritingisessentialinyour life as a student – writing papers, answering exam questions – and as your life as aprofessionalwritingjournalarticles,reviews,grantproposals,andonandonandon.

7. Talk in Class Discussions Oneofthebestwaysyouwilllearncoursematerialistotalkoutloudduringclassdiscussions.Yourability to talkaboutpsychology isnotonly critical for youreducation,butessential foryourcareer!Manypeopleareshyatfirst,andthatmakessense.Still,besuretotrytodevelopyourvoiceandgetinonthosediscussions.

8. Ask for help Graduateschoolisadifficult,challenging,andstressfulexperience.PleaseaskforhelpWHENyouneedit,notafteritistoolatetodoanythingaboutit.Wearecommittedtoyoursuccessinthisprocess.

9. Connect with the Faculty Identifyingyourthesisadvisorearlyinyourgraduatecareerisbyfarthemostimportantthingthatyoucandotomaximizeyourchanceofsuccess.Takeeveryopportunitytogettoknowourfaculty—stopbyofficehours,cometohearthemspeakduringcolloquia;makeanappointmenttolearnabouttheirresearch.Notonlywillyouquicklyidentifywhichfacultymemberyoushareresearch interestswith,butyouwillbeginthebuildingofprofessionalrelationshipsthatwillserveyouwellfortherestofyourcareer.

10. Maintain a Balance in Your Life Rememberthatonlypartofwhatyouaredoingisgraduateschoolthatsitsinthecontextoftherestofyourlife.Yourchallengewillbetobalancetheincredibledemandsofthisprogramwiththerestofyourlife.

Please tend to your other relationships in your life. Enjoy this process as one of themanyexperiencesopentoyouallofthetime.Yourlifeishappeningrightnow,itisnotwaitingforyouforwhenyou“finallyfinishschool.”

Findingafacultyadviserisoftenthemostimportantstepinyourgraduatecareer.Thereisnosubstituteforguidancefromsomeonewhohasalreadysurvivedwhatyouareattemptingandwhocanofferwiseperspectiveonhowbesttomatchyourtalentswithanappropriatecareer.What kindof adviser should you look for?The ideal person cannotonly guideyour career,support your research, and help to find you a job, but can also serve as a close and caringmentor—a"researchaunt/uncle,"asoneauthorputsit.Obviously,thisisararecombination,butoneworthsearchingfor.

Ifyouarriveatgraduateschoolwithouthavingchosenanadviser,whichiscommonlythecase,startlookingrightaway.Lookuppublicationsoffacultyinyourdepartment;talkwithsupportstaffandprofessors.Ifpossible,trackdownpastandpresentstudentswhohaveworkedwithaparticularadviser.

Doyouneedaprominentscientistasanadviser?Prestigeisimportant,becauseyouwillwantexpertguidanceonyourresearchandhelpinfindingajobwhenyouarefinished.Butyouneeda personwho is available, who values interactingwith you and other students, andwho iswillingtoteachnecessarysurvivalskills.

Ask about the laboratory group that your potential adviser has assembled. Has the advisersecured adequate funding for the group? Does the group have off‐campus, collaborativeinteractionswithotheracademicorindustrialgroups?Lookforadvancedgraduatestudentsinthegroupwhocanhelpyouwhentheadviserisbusy.

Whenyouchooseanadviser,discussimportant issuesearly.Befrankaboutyourplans,yourstrengths,andyourweakpoints.Wheredoyouneedhelp?Whatabilitiescanyouoffer?What

commitmentswillbeexpectedofyou?Ifyouwillworkaspartofaresearchteam,howwillyourrolebedefinedandhowwill yougain credit foryourowncontribution to the team'swork?Raisesuchquestionsbeforetheygrowintoproblems.

Itisveryimportanttorememberthattheeducationofagraduatestudentistheresponsibilityofanentiredepartment,not justofasingleadviser.Taketheinitiativeearlyto formathesiscommittee.Discussyourprojectandyourstatuswithcommitteemembersandotherfacultyasyougoalong.Everyprofessionalcontactthatyoumakestrengthensyourstandingandraisesyourchancesofbuildingarewardingcareer.

The Adviser-Student Relationship In our graduate program, you will work as a research assistant in your adviser's researchprogram.Anaspectofthisresearchshouldbecomeyourownresearchtopic.Usuallysuchanarrangement benefits both parties: you, as a "scholar's apprentice," gain original researchexperience,andtheprofessorgainsmuch‐neededassistance.

Whenyoubegintoworkinsuchaprogram,findoutasmuchasyoucanaboutitinadvance.Take the initiative to educate yourself as broadly aspossible about theresearchtopicandthetheoreticalcontextinwhichitresides.Manystudentsfocustheir energies so narrowly on a specific aspect of research that they neglect tounderstand the context of their work or to develop the skills that make an

interdisciplinarycareerpossible.

Makeaspecialefforttounderstandhowyouradviserwillawardcreditfortheworkyoudo.Forexample,willyournamebelistedfirstonanypublicationsresultingfromyourownwork?Thatis especially important on a joint project, where your own contributions might be hard todistinguish from thoseofothers.Remember,oneofyourgoals in thisprogramshouldbe tobeginestablishingaportfoliothatwillfacilitate,ratherthanhinder,yournextcareerstep(e.g.,admission into a Ph.D. program or employment in a research setting). Review anotherdocumentfromtheCommitteeonScience,Engineering,andPublicPolicyGroup(“OnBeingaScientist: Responsible Conduct in Research”2) that provides guidance on research ethics(COSEPUP,1995).Readthisbookletoverbeforeyoubeginresearchactivities.

What kind of relationship will you have with your adviser: teacher‐student or employer‐employee?Will you be colleagues or adversaries— in school and beyond? It is primarily aprofessional relationship, but it is also a personal one. Itwill succeed only if both sides arewilling towork at it. It ismost likely to succeed if yourmajor professor is someonewhosestandardsandgoalsappealtoyouandwhohasaspecialinterestinyouasaperson.Thebestoutcomeisthatyouradviserturnsouttobeatruementor—awiseandtrustedcounselor.

There is often an implicit contract between adviser and student: the adviser devotes time,guidance,andpersonalenergyintheexpectationthatthestudent‐apprenticewillsomedaydoresearchthatwillmakethementorproud.Doesyouradviserhavethisexpectation?Doyou?Canthetwoofyoudiscussothercareerpossibilitiesaswell?

Whatcanyoudoiftherelationshipwithyouradviserisapoorone?Ifthetwoofyoucannotworkitout,youshouldtrytofindanotherprofessorwhoisqualifiedandwillingtotakeyouon.Ingeneral,itisbesttomakeachangeassoonasyouseethatthesituationisunworkable.Willchangingadvisersslowyourprogress?Willyouhave toalter thedirectionofyourresearch?Onlyifitislateinyourstudentcareershouldyouendureadifficultsituationratherthantryforabetterone.Theheadofthegraduateprogramorthedepartmentchairwillbeabletohelpyoutodecidewhattodo.Donothesitatetocontactoneorboth!

Choosing a Research Topic Alongwithchoosinganadviser,themostimportantdecisionyouwillmakeingraduateschoolischoosingaresearchtopic.Youwilllikelyspendanumberofyears,andpossiblytherestofyourcareer,workinginthegeneralfieldthatyouselectnow.

Youmightbetemptedtotacklesomethingambitiousthatwillwinabigprize.Resistthattemptation.Thisisthebeginningofyourcareer.Thepointofgraduateschoolistolearntodoresearch.Beawarethatyouroriginaltopic,especiallyinpsychology,might not work out. A good thesis adviser will have backup plans in case youroriginalprojectfailstoyieldresults.

Yourtopicshouldbeoriginal,anditshouldadvancewhatisknownaboutyourfield. But it should be something that you and your adviser believe you cancompleteandwriteupinabout2years.Whenyouenterthenextstageofyourcareer,youcanadvance toanotheraspectof the topic if it still interestsyou.Rememberalsothatyouroverallfieldofresearchismoreimportantthanthespecificsubfieldthatyoumightexploreinschool.Thetechniquesandprincipleslearned in graduate school will serve you well even as you move to newsubfieldsorspecialties.

Achieving Breadth Your main focus in graduate school is to learn the fundamentals of yourdiscipline, but youalsowant tobroadenyour competenceand acquire other

careerskills thatcanenhanceyourvalue toemployers.Breadthcanbedescribedunder twocategories—academicandcareer.

For academic breadth,master's‐degree recipients should have some familiaritywith one ormore subfields. For example, a cognitive psychologist may well benefit from courses inbiologicalpsychology,orvisaversa.Suchbreadthmightallowyoutoseeyourownworkinafullercontextandunderstandinterdisciplinaryquestions.

Beawareofhoweasyitistooverspecializeinpursuingaresearchtopic.Anexcessivelynarrow"field of view" might slow your recognition of emerging fields of research, limit your laterresearchcontributions,orrestrictyourcareeroptions.

Career breadth is attained through such activities as summer internships and on‐campusresearch programs that work in collaboration with industry or government agencies (e.g.,NASA). Internshipswith industry or government laboratories take time away from campus‐basedresearchorclasses.Buttheycanleadtobroaderperspectives,newcontacts,andbetterjobs.Theycanalsohelpyoutomatureanddevelopconfidenceinyourabilitytosucceedinthenonacademicworld.Taken together, these effectsmightparadoxically shorten the total timespentinschool.

Ensuring Steady Progress Howlongdoesittaketofinishgraduateschool?Amaster’sprogramwithathesisrequirement(i.e., our program) can be expected to take 2‐3 years to complete.Working expeditiously isimportant. Revalidation If the studentwishes to re‐validate an expired course theymust have ProgramCoordinatorpetition for this re‐validation directly to Graduate Studies. 1.0DEFINITIONSOFACADEMICDISHONESTY

1.1CHEATING

San JoséStateUniversitydefinescheatingas theactofobtainingorattempting toobtain credit for academic work through the use of any dishonest, deceptive, orfraudulentmeans.Cheatingincludes:

1.1.1 Copying, in part or in whole, from another’s test or other evaluationinstrument including homework assignments, worksheets, lab reports,essays,summaries,quizzes,etc.;

1.1.2 Submitting work previously graded in another course without priorapprovalbythecourseinstructororbydepartmentalpolicy;

1.1.3 Submittingworksimultaneouslypresentedintwocourseswithoutpriorapprovalbybothcourseinstructorsorbythedepartmentpoliciesofbothdepartments;

1.1.4 Using or consulting sources, tools or materials prohibited by theinstructorpriorto,orduringanexamination;

1.1.5 Alteringorinterferingwiththegradingprocess;

1.1.6 Sittingforanexaminationbyasurrogate,orasasurrogate;

1.1.7 Any other act committed by a student in the course of their academicworkthatdefraudsormisrepresents,includingaidingothersinanyoftheactionsdefinedabove.

1.2PLAGIARISM

San José State University defines plagiarism as the act of representing the work ofanother asone's ownwithout givingappropriate credit, regardlessofhow thatworkwasobtained,andsubmittingittofulfillacademicrequirements.

Plagiarismincludes:

1.2.1 Knowingly or unknowingly incorporating the ideas, words, sentences,paragraphs,orpartsof,orthespecificsubstanceofanother'swork,withoutgivingappropriatecredit,andrepresentingtheproductasone'sownwork;

3.0EVALUATIONANDREPORTING

When a faculty member suspects a violation of the Academic Integrity Policy and is inpossessionofevidencetosubstantiatethatviolationitisthefacultymember’sresponsibilitytotakethefollowingsteps:

3.1 Confrontthesituationdiscretely.Thatis,facultymembersshallnotdiscussspecificchargesofcheating,plagiarism,oranyotherviolationsinvolvingspecificindividualsintheclassroombeforeothermembersoftheclass.

3.2 Communicate with the student concerning the alleged infraction; arrange for aconference to present documentation. In this conference, the student should beadvised of the allegation and made aware of the supporting evidence and theprobableconsequences.[1]Facultymembersshouldmaketheirbestefforttomeetwiththestudentinperson,butifthatisnotfeasiblethentheycancommunicateinwriting.

3.3 InformthestudentofthesanctionstoberecommendedinaccordancewithSection4.0 if the facultymember still believes that a violation of theAcademic IntegrityPolicyhasoccurred.

3.4 ReporttheallegedinfractionandtheactiontakentotheOfficeofStudentConduct&EthicalDevelopmentonthereportingformforviolationstotheAcademicIntegrityPolicy.Acopyofthesupportingdocumentationmustbeattachedtothereportingform.

3.5 Theinstructormayimposetherecommendedpenaltyandmakethereportcalledforinsection3.4withoutaconferencewhenastudentfailstoattendascheduledconference todiscuss theallegeddishonesty,orwhentheapparentdishonesty isdetectedonlyneartheendofthesemesterandthefacultymembermakesagood‐faith,albeitunsuccessful,efforttocontactthestudent.Ineithercase,thestudent'srighttoappealispreserved.

4.0SANCTIONS

Thereshallbetwomajorclassificationsofsanctionsthatmaybeimposedforviolationsofthis policy: Academic and Administrative. Academic sanctions are actions related to thecoursework or grades determined by the faculty member. Administrative sanctions areactions that address a student's status on campus and are determined by the Office ofStudentConduct&EthicalDevelopment.AcademicsanctionsandAdministrativesanctionsmaybeimposedsimultaneously.

4.1ACADEMICSANCTIONS

Facultymembersareresponsiblefordeterminingacademicsanctions.Facultymembersmayfindithelpfultoconsultwiththeirdepartmentchair,seniorfacultymembers,ortheConduct Administrator in consideration of appropriate academic sanctions. Suchsanctions shall be proportional to the offense against the Academic Integrity Policy.Usually a form of "grade modification" will be employed. Before sanctions can beemployed, the faculty member must have verified the instance(s) of academicdishonestybypersonalobservationordocumentation.

Academicdishonestycasesthatoccurintheclassroomshallbehandledbythefacultymember.Afteractionhasbeentakenbythefacultymember,thefacultymembermustcomplete a form that identifies the student who was found responsible, the generalnatureoftheoffense,theactiontaken,andmustmakearecommendationastowhetheror not additional action should be considered by the Office of Student Conduct andEthicalDevelopment.

Recommendedsanctionsinclude:

Oralreprimand.

Failureontheevaluationinstrument.

Reductionincoursegrade.

Failureinthecourse.

Referralforadditionaladministrativesanctions.

FACULTYDISCRETION:

IncidentsinvolvingthecarelessorinepthandlingofquotedmaterialthatfallshortofthedefinitionsofcheatingorplagiarismasdefinedinItems1.1and1.2ofthispolicymaybedealtwithatthediscretionofthefacultymemberconcerned.

The faculty member also has the discretion and obligation to determine whetherspecificactsbyastudentfallunderthedescriptionin1.1.7

ADMINISTRATIVESANCTIONS:

As stipulated in the California Administrative Code, Section 41301, cheating orplagiarisminconnectionwithanacademicprogrammaywarrantexpulsion,suspension,probationoralessersanction.AdministrativeactioninvolvingacademicdishonestyatSanJoséStateUniversityistheresponsibilityoftheOfficeofStudentConduct&EthicalDevelopment.

TheOfficeofStudentConduct&EthicalDevelopmentwillrespondto:

Referralsfromthefaculty;

Repeat violations as brought to attention by the faculty or through thecentralizedreportsfiledintheOfficeofStudentConduct&EthicalDevelopment.

TheOfficeofStudentConduct&EthicalDevelopmentwillnotifyfacultymemberswhenaction has been taken. The Office of Student Conduct & Ethical Development shallmaintain a record of students who have been reported for violating the AcademicIntegrityPolicy.

5.0PROTECTIONOFRIGHTS

Nothinginthispolicyis intendedtodenystudentsappropriatedueprocess, includingthe right to be informed of the charges, the nature of the evidence supporting thecharges,andtohaveameetingwiththefacultymember,theOfficeofStudentConduct&Ethical Development or other decision‐makers. At any suchmeeting statements andevidenceonbehalfofthestudentmaybesubmitted.Thispolicyisnotintendedtodenytherighttoappealanydecisionthroughappropriateuniversitychannels,

When an administrative sanction is being considered, Executive Order 970, StudentDisciplinaryProcedures for theCaliforniaStateUniversity, stipulates thatastudent isentitled to a hearing to determine whether violations of conduct or conduct‐relatedregulationshaveoccurred.

6.0THREATS

Threatsagainstanymemberofthefacultyasaconsequenceofimplementingthispolicyonacademic integrity will be cause for disciplinary action under Section 41301, Title 5,CaliforniaCodeofRegulations,andmayalsoresultincivilandcriminalaction.

7.0DISSEMINATIONOFINFORMATION

7.1 TheAcademic Integritypolicy shall bepublished in theSchedule of Classes eachsemesterand in theUniversityCatalog.Copiesof thispolicy shall alsobeheld inevery department office and in the Office of Student Conduct & EthicalDevelopment.

7.2 DisseminationofthisinformationshallbetheresponsibilityoftheOfficeofStudentConduct & Ethical Development. Information is available athttp://www.sjsu.edu/studentconduct/

7.3 The Office of Student Conduct & Ethical Development shall submit a statisticalreportonthenumberandtypeofinfractionsandtheireventualdispositiontotheAcademicSenateannually.

8 Research and Publication 8.01 Institutional Approval

Wheninstitutionalapprovalisrequired,psychologistsprovideaccurateinformationabouttheir research proposals and obtain approval prior to conducting the research. Theyconducttheresearchinaccordancewiththeapprovedresearchprotocol.

8.02 Informed Consent to Research (a) When obtaining informed consent as required in Standard 3.10, Informed Consent,psychologistsinformparticipantsabout(1)thepurposeoftheresearch,expectedduration,andprocedures;(2)theirrighttodeclinetoparticipateandtowithdrawfromtheresearchonce participation has begun; (3) the foreseeable consequences of declining orwithdrawing; (4) reasonably foreseeable factors thatmay be expected to influence theirwillingness to participate such as potential risks, discomfort, or adverse effects; (5) anyprospectiveresearchbenefits;(6)limitsofconfidentiality;(7)incentivesforparticipation;and(8)whomtocontactforquestionsabouttheresearchandresearchparticipants'rights.They provide opportunity for the prospective participants to ask questions and receiveanswers. 8.05 Dispensing With Informed Consent for Research Psychologists may dispense with informed consent only (1) where research would notreasonably be assumed to create distress or harm and involves (a) the study of normaleducational practices, curricula, or classroom management methods conducted ineducational settings; (b) only anonymous questionnaires, naturalistic observations, orarchivalresearchforwhichdisclosureofresponseswouldnotplaceparticipantsatriskofcriminalorcivilliabilityordamagetheirfinancialstanding,employability,orreputation,andconfidentiality is protected; or (c) the study of factors related to job or organizationeffectivenessconductedinorganizationalsettingsforwhichthereisnorisktoparticipants'employability,andconfidentialityisprotectedor(2)whereotherwisepermittedbylaworfederalorinstitutionalregulations.

8.06 Offering Inducements for Research Participation (a) Psychologists make reasonable efforts to avoid offering excessive or inappropriatefinancialorotherinducementsforresearchparticipationwhensuchinducementsarelikelytocoerceparticipation.(b) When offering professional services as an inducement for research participation,psychologists clarify the nature of the services, as well as the risks, obligations, andlimitations.(SeealsoStandard6.05,BarterwithClients/Patients.)

8.07 Deception in Research (a)Psychologistsdonotconductastudyinvolvingdeceptionunlesstheyhavedeterminedthat the use of deceptive techniques is justified by the study's significant prospectivescientific, educational, or applied value and that effective non‐deceptive alternativeproceduresarenotfeasible.(b)Psychologistsdonotdeceiveprospectiveparticipantsaboutresearchthatisreasonablyexpectedtocausephysicalpainorsevereemotionaldistress.(c)Psychologistsexplainanydeceptionthatisanintegralfeatureofthedesignandconductofanexperimenttoparticipantsasearlyasisfeasible,preferablyattheconclusionoftheirparticipation, but no later than at the conclusion of the data collection, and permitparticipantstowithdrawtheirdata.(SeealsoStandard8.08,Debriefing.)

8.08 Debriefing (a) Psychologists provide a prompt opportunity for participants to obtain appropriateinformation about the nature, results, and conclusions of the research, and they takereasonable steps to correct anymisconceptions that participantsmay have ofwhich thepsychologistsareaware.(b) If scientific or humane values justify delaying or withholding this information,psychologiststakereasonablemeasurestoreducetheriskofharm.(c)Whenpsychologistsbecomeawarethatresearchprocedureshaveharmedaparticipant,theytakereasonablestepstominimizetheharm.

8.09 Humane Care and Use of Animals in Research (a)Psychologistsacquire,carefor,use,anddisposeofanimalsincompliancewithcurrentfederal,state,andlocallawsandregulations,andwithprofessionalstandards.(b) Psychologists trained in researchmethods and experienced in the care of laboratoryanimals supervise all procedures involving animals and are responsible for ensuringappropriateconsiderationoftheircomfort,health,andhumanetreatment.(c)Psychologistsensurethatallindividualsundertheirsupervisionwhoareusinganimalshavereceivedinstructioninresearchmethodsandinthecare,maintenance,andhandlingofthe species being used, to the extent appropriate to their role. Even though astudent has already been admitted into a department’s graduate program, theadvancement to candidacy process is an important step towards graduation. An

approvedcandidacysignifiesthattheUniversityandyourdepartmenthasapprovedtheworkyouhavecompletedalreadyandalsoapprovesyourplanforcompletingtheremainingunitsleftfor yourmaster’sdegree.Thus it is essential that youmeetbothUniversity anddepartmentrequirementsforadvancingtocandidacy.

BeforeApplyingforCandidacyYou must meet certain requirements before applying to candidacy. Your admission intocandidacywillbedelayedordeniedifthefollowingconditionsarenotalreadymet.

Your Diploma One of the last processes for clearing students for graduation is clearing your last semestergrades.ThegraduationdateforfallsemesterisDecember,SpringsemesterisMay,andSummersemester is August. However, Admissions and Records do not usually post grades until themonth following your graduation semester. Because of this delay, you should not expect toreceiveyourdiplomauntilsixweeksafteryourgraduationdate.Ifafter8weeksyoustillhavenotreceivedyourdiplomaoranyletternotifyingyouofyourgraduationstatuspleasecontactGraduateStudies.

CommencementBoth the Psychology Department and the University hold convocation/ commencementceremonies.TheseceremoniesareheldonceayearinMayandgraduatesfromsummer, fall,andspringsemestersarewelcomedtoattend.Itisnotrequiredforyoutoattendanyceremony.Yourdegreeisconferredandmailedseparatelyinadifferentprocess.
