Your Graduate Advisor will enter the following into your online file-Graduate Student Summary in CIS
* Supervisory Committees (SVC) Master’s - entered within the 1st year PhD - entered within the 2nd year
* Your Program of Study (PoS)Please notify your Graduate Advisor when you have registered for your final class(es) for your last semester.
Make sure a Degree Type is selected on your PoS:Thesis (Master’s 6-10 allowed on PoS)Project/Non-thesisCoursework only (this is for professional degrees)
Review your Graduate Transcript to make sure you do not have any outstanding grades; if so, contact your department to assist you in submitting a Report of Credit form(s) to the Registrar’s Office.
* Exam DatesDates of completed Master’s Comprehensive Exam, Project/Non-Thesis, Qualifying Exam (PhD), Thesis Defense. Continuous enrollment means that you are enrolled in graduate coursework from the time you are admitted through your final exam.

If you would like to participate in commencement activities prior to completing all degree requirements please consult your Graduate Advisor.
Department Approved Manuscript MUST be submitted to the Thesis Office by the Thesis Office deadline, please check the website for updated deadlines.Students must read the Handbook for Theses and Dissertations before starting their thesis/dissertation. It is the students responsibility to review everything on the Graduate School website

* Submission of a manuscript during a semester does not guarantee graduation in that semester. Factors that can result in not graduating include the following:
• Unavailability of the student to participate in the ongoing editing process• Major formatting errors (see the Handbook)• Major problems with grammar, spelling, etc.• Manuscripts that have not been approved by the supervisory committee and
department chair* Manuscripts submitted on the deadline but that have any of these
problems will not be considered for that semester.* Please take these factors into account when planning defense and
graduation dates.* The entire editing process can take 2 or more months to complete, so
the earlier a manuscript is submitted, the better the student’s chance of graduating in the desired semester.
* However, students wishing to be considered for graduation in a specific semester must meet the dates in this calendar.

* Supervisory Committee (SVC) policy http://gradschool.utah.edu/graduate-catalog/degree-requirements/ When selecting committee members please ensure that the committee is configured to comply with Supervisory Committee policy. If the proposed SVC is not in compliance, please talk to your department about an exception.
Policy Overview:
Master’s SVC - 3 members; 2 must be Regular Faculty (Tenure/Tenure Track) within department (chair and 1st member). Please submit your committee selection to the
Graduate Advisor within the 1st year of your program.
PhD SVC - 5 members; 3 must be Regular Faculty (Tenure/Tenure Track) within your department (chair, 1st and 2nd members) and 1 member must be outside of the department. If your outside member is not a University of Utah employee, their CV
needs to be submitted to The Graduate School.

You can only view your Graduate Student Summary file in the Campus Information System (CIS) after your Graduate Advisor has entered your Supervisory Committee (SVC).

Time Limit PolicyMaster’s students have 4 years to complete their degreePhD students have 7 years to complete their degree(See Graduate Catalog for more details or department handbook)

If your committee has not been entered, you will not be able to see your online file: Graduate Student Summary in Campus Information Service (CIS)
* Graduate Student Program of Study
• Please notify your Graduate Advisor when you have registered for your final class(es) for your last semester.
• Your Graduate Advisor must enter your Program of Study (PoS) during your last semester with all the required classes listed for your degree.
Please check the following:
• Committee approvals and comments. (Your committee will receive an email to approve your PoS the Monday following the effective date on your PoS).
• A summary of thesis hours are listed. (Master’s students must have a minimum of 6 thesis hours, PhD students must have a minimum of 14 thesis hours).
• Please make sure a Degree Type is selected on your PoS:• Thesis• Project/Non-thesis• Coursework only (this is for professional degrees)
• If you have transfer work listed, it will need to be checked off in your PoS to be added to your total hours.
• Graduation term you have applied for.
• Total thesis hours (Minimum thesis hours required Master’s – 6; PhD – 14)
• Total units (Graduate School requires a minimum of 30 hours for Master degree.)
• Cumulative GPA (3.0 required)

The Graduate Student Program Plan Audit provides a summary of the requirements needed for graduation. The audit will show which requirements have been completed:
• Graduate School • Graduate Application • Thesis Hours• Total Hours• Residency • Program of Study Approvals• Exam Approvals• Language Verification• Thesis Release• Class Grades• Supervisory Committee Approval
The audit lists your continuous registration. This is where the course 7990 for PhD students will be listed (this course can only be taken 4 times, see the Graduate Catalog for details).
Continuous Registration policy: You must be enrolled in graduate coursework from the time you are matriculated until taking your final exam. (Summer enrollment is only required if you are taking an exam or to meet visa requirements.)
The audit will list all the approved leaves of absence.
